I love what New City School does for my kids and for my family! My children are challenged academically - even in areas where they already excel - truly the top-notch academics were our primary focus. Yet, I now realize that the other factors that we must have been drawn to at the time, but only realize in hindsight, are the intangible qualities that have my kids eagerly running into the building each morning and excitedly recounting their days at the dinner table each night.

New City School is an extremely special place. It is exceptional in the education that it provides and prepares it's students to succeed at the high level secondary schools in the area. The teachers at New City don't just teach information; they teach the students how to learn, how to question, how to look at something from multiple points of view, and most of all, how to express one's thoughts and opinions in a thoughtful and respectful manner. Students at New City learn amazing skills starting at a very young age. They give presentations to classmates and start working on public speaking skills in preschool. They "reflect" on experiences and work they have done as a way to think about how they can improve. They learn goal setting, organizational skills, and are constantly pushed to be their best selves. I have had 3 children attend New City and I am struck not only by their academic success, but also by their comfort in class participation in middle and high school, their willingness to seek out help when needed, their self-assuredness and ease with peers, and their high work ethic. New City instills a love for learning and creates a strong sense of community and community responsibility. It's students are respectful, kind, and care about being good citizens and people. It is a school for the whole family to be a part of at this important stage in a family's life. It is truly special and I suggest that anyone looking for an elementary school in St. Louis to walk through those red doors and check it out!

Handles bullying effectively: Strongly agree

New City is a place where things are talked about. If there is an issue going on, teachers discuss things with students and any conflicts are brought out into the open and resolved. There is a school counselor also, but with such an emphasis on respect and kindness, I haven't seen an issue with bullying.

Supports LD students: Strongly agree

New City has reading specialists to assist students who may need some additional help and teachers are adept at noticing who may need additional support.

Effective school leaders: Strongly agree

Alexis Wright, the new head of school, is an incredible addition to New City. The students, teachers, staff, and parents are so incredibly impressed with his leadership thus far.

Develops character: Strongly agree

New City School is a microcosm of how I wish the world could be- kind, respectful, thoughtful, diverse, and appreciative of difference. Students learn to value and respect each other and this becomes part of the fabric of who they are.

Teacher effectiveness: Strongly agree

Incredible staff and staff retainment. The teachers are so experienced. They get to know their students so well and bring out the best in them. Whenever I have had questions or concerns, they are ready and eager to offer support and guidance. The teachers at New City are so incredibly special!

Amount of homework: Strongly agree

- a
New City has a thoughtful approach to homework. The students don't get "busy work". The assignments are thoughtful and purposeful and gradually build from grade level to grade level.

New City is light-years ahead of other schools. They were looking at the whole child and character education before everyone. Academic rigor is a huge focus and multiple intelligences. The idea that all children learn differently has been the core value of NCS from the start when Tom Hoerr joined the school. Top notch teachers that truly care about your child, and they want to know how your child best learns and wants your child to be the best they can be. When I ask one of my child's teachers a simple question, I get a detailed account of where they are, why/data and where they will be. Another thing I love about New City is that they emphasize public speaking and expression. I have talked to secondary school admissions folks and they comment that they can tell which kids went to NCS because they are so prepared and confident in themselves because they know their strengths and weakness. They are the organizers of doing good! I love NCS and wish I could have gone there!
