Want to improve this school’s profile? You can!

All schools on GreatSchools begin with BASIC completeness, which includes important information like contact details and test scores. It’s up to the school community to take the next steps. As a parent or community member, you can share what you know with other families by writing a review or answering a few questions about what the school offers. As a school leader, you can upload photos, describe school programs, and more with an Official school profile.

The completeness meter moves to INTERMEDIATE, then ADVANCED, and finally HONOR ROLL as you complete the following: 10 or more reviews, at least 1 photo, and 9 program questions parents find helpful.

South Middle is an average public school. There are some really good educators who seem to really care about the kids and go above and beyond to teach these students. Some of the eighth grade math teachers have not been the best. My children loved math before taking advanced math courses here. They did well and learned the material, but their love for math was gone. I would like to see improvement in the eighth grade math education. It IS possible to teach the material and keep it fun and enjoyable. The goal should not be to frustrate our kids.

This school is the awesomeist school i ever went to! The teachers give constructive critisism for the students. Principals are just as smart as the teachers one of them was a math teacher i think...the academics are full of fun things that you get to study. While the students eat lunch the teachers have plan time while they eat and guess what sometimes they make games up for the students to learn with. Then, students get to play it in class it is so fun being with SMS this is a great school for kids!!

I'm in 7th grade this year and i've never been so depressed in my life since i've began this miserable year. Last year was the best ( With the exception of one teacher) But then when I came into 7th grade life is wretched. The teachers yell at you to get ot class even at your locker, all my friends are gone, and the principals could care less about what you have to say and more about everything else! And don't think I'm just some lowly F student either, I get mostly B or B+. I've cried 5 times this year in school!

I have 2 children here x 2 yrs. Very difficult to get teachers to respond to inquiries or any learning needs outside the average. Principal more involved with social issues between kids than learning. Guidance counselors great & best employees but they arent doing the teaching. I have been very disappointed with this school !!

I am beginning my third year at SMS. In the past two years, I have only seen one fist fight and a few verbal ones. The students and staff are generally friendly, but there are a few teachers that could use work. I love South, and I'm disappointed to move on to high school next year. Most teachers are great and understanding, and every team will provide after school help if the homework is too hard or challenging. If your student is having troubles, refer them to A+ Tutoring after school in the library where teachers and students are there to provide help. Middle school is hard sometimes, but the learning environment at South is amazing. The staff does their job well, and students appreciate that. South made my middle school years great. I love SMS!

I found the leadership very much in control and was pleased with their high degree of administrative control. There were times information was not received or dispersed to the parents timely nor at all mainly due to the dependence upon the student (our children) being made responsible for sharing it. I found the Comm. Arts very routinized & not much was gained in learning skills because of it. My son thought it was the boringest class that didn't involve much thought process and not much new information compared to 5th grade. I'd like the curriculum to be vamped and made more challenging for the students. Involve more discussion and enhancement of subject matter in all academic course work. I'd like to see more advanced and enrichment materials provided to students who are clearly more advanced in subject matter. Give these students an opportunity to flex their intellectual muscles!

My son tests & performs @ a higher level than many of his classmates & just completed 6th grade. Within the first 2 weeks of school, two of his teachers recognized he needed more challenging classwork & requested permission to move him to an advanced classroom. I was very excited to see they are paying attn! He has also been in trouble a few times (typical boy stuff really). The principal had to follow policy, but also recognizes these werent horrible offenses & used common sense & understanding when handing out lectures/punishment. So many administrators, teachers, and principals tend to exaggerate & forget these are kids & will push their luck on occasion.

I attended SMS from 6th to 8th grade. I believe that the education I recieved was above average. In my three years there I had only one teacher that did care about my falling grades and didn't even bother to help me. The teachers at SMS are full of life. Most had an amazing ability to get us excited on the material. The administration didnt really interfere with the students unless their was a problem. Overall I believe that the school is above average.

My daughter is a 7th grader @ SMS. I have been pleased with the school and Principal thus far. Most teachers and Principals seem to care about the quality of education students receive. I am upset with the quality of education my daughter is receiving from her math teacher. I spend at least 2 hours a night explaining the homework that is due the next day. My daughter receives good grades and good marks for effort and attitude, but she is confused with this math teacher. As far as I am concerned both the Sup & teacher are not worthy to be on the payroll of this district.

I have a daugter attending SMS. The student teacher ratio is outrageous! This district lies about the real ratio! My daughter is just a number with little quality teaching. She brings hours of homework home and does not have a clue how to do it. Her bus ride to school is out of control and very unsafe! When speaking to the Superintendent about SMS, he acts un-proffessional and non-supportive about my daughters education.

I have an 8th grader at SMS and I hope that this year is better than grades 6 & 7. I feel that the administration is very unfair to students. I could list numerous situations that my child felt humiliated and this created a very low level of self-esteem for him. I feel that as soon as he walks in the door he is on edge. I take him to school and as soon as he gets out of the car his head drops. I wish the teachers would keep their humiliating comments to themselves and remember how scary school can be. I wish they would be advocates for the students and make learning an experience that is not filled with so much dread. I have been extremely disappointed with SMS.

The administration is a very fair administration. They really care for the students, and if you ask, I am sure most of the students would agree. As for the parent who mentioned the activity bus, the bus only runs if there are enough people to sign up. The school has no say in that. As far as the fighting goes, there are only a few arguements but never fist.

I just wrote the past review and i still have those great thought of SMS and much more. The teachers are wonderful and know exactly what they are doing. They have the best techniques and they understand if it is to hard, but they help you through it. If your child is going into 6th grade team 6-2 you should hope for cause they have the best teachers. Mr.Rowan for math, Mrs.Moonier for Communication Arts, Mrs.Fearn for Reading, Mr.Dudley for social studies, Ms.Climer and Mrs.Lang for P.E., Mr Buske the choir teacher, and Mrs.Held the Science teacher. For the 6th graders in my class on my team(6-2) we had an awesome student teacher for most the year, her name is Ms.Embrey. She is the nicest person you will ever meet. As you can tell this school has awesome teachers and awesome students! So if you move out here attend SMS!

I am currently going into 7th grade at sms and i love the school! Mr.Dudley and Mrs.Fearn are the best teachers! The choir is great too! in the 2005-2006 school year the choir won 2nd plac and got 96 points out of 100!! If you are moving out to this area don't worry sms is a great school! I have learned a lot and i am now in advanced math ans advanced science next year. The teachers help you understand if you need the help. South Middle School is an awesome school.

I have twins in the 8th grade who attend this school and none of us has had a rewarding experience. The kids are severly limited in their self-expression and problem-solving between students is not allowed. The intolerance of this school confounds me. The administrators go strictly by the district guidelines with no room for any common sense and mitigating circumstances are not even considered. My children feel as if they are learning in a fish bowl and are walking on eggshells. Every action they do is up to a subjective view by the administration. They have been targeted and are now not given any benefit of the doubt in potential disciplinary actions. This is extremely unfortunate.

Some of the teachers (Mr. Glenn and Mr. Richardson overall) are funny and make learning fun I am currently a 6th grader here and was a new kid about 3 weeks into the year. The kids are excellent, but the teachers-well, I'm worried about them.

I have two children, one of which is now in 8th grade at South Middle. If it were not for our parenting at home, I do not believe that they would ever have a voice. It seems that South is living in a dark age of realizing what goes on in a middle school childs life. My son has been harassed about the way he looks and has had other kids start fights because of our religious views. Even though he is a honor roll student who has never been in trouble. I think for the most part South has a good ciriculum, but how are kids going to learn in a hostile one sided environment. I would like to see the school and its faculty take a tolorance class and learn to accept all kids, no matter how they look or what they belive in.

Some teachers are very good, some very burnt with unfair teaching practices. The Student to Child ratio is well over 20 students per teacher. They offer a bus for extra school activities, then decline it when students sign up for the activities. The school is on a downward spiral from 5yrs ago.

My daughter is entering 8th grade at SMS. I would rate the school above average overall. Yes there are a few stinkers for teachers, you will find that EVERYWHERE ~ in 2 years (14 teachers) she's had 2! However there are also EXCELLENT teachers here, like Mr. Haskins, Mr. Delabar, Mr. Oden, Mrs. Gevers, Mrs. Fearn, Mr. Dudley, Mrs. Henke and Mr. Buske - and counselor Mr. Huenker. They go well above and beyond, and make up for the stinkers. The school is clean and well maintained. It is safe and clearly a caring environment. There are OODLES of after school activities (sports and clubs). As far as fights, my daughter says she's only aware of one fight in two years and both students were immediately sent to in-school suspension. These are pubescent and pre-pubescent children, unfortunately there will be the occasional fight, how it's handled is what's important. Go SMS!

My child is in 7th grade and my husband and I both have been very disappointed with this school. There are some good teachers but it seems that each year my child is stuck with at least one teacher who either lose kid's papers or can't seem to get the grade in the right child's gradebook line. We have had numerous phone calls (all from our end) about this. We didn't know that our kid was missing homework until the report card came home with an F. The homework load is ridiculous at times and if it weren't for our contacting the school, there would be no parental involvement. I'm very disappointed in the nonchalant attitude some of the teachers have toward the student's grades. Thank goodness for great teachers like Mr. Haskins! We are seriously considering private school next year.

I attend south midddle school. I'm in eigth grade, and i've has been lucky enough to get basically ok teachers so far. Except for one teacher, which i've had for all 3 years. This teacher (who i won't name) is very opinionated and is always (cough cough) right no matter what! if your child gets a teacher like that, i suggust you switch them immediately or be in danger of hurting your child's ablility to have their own opions about things!

South middle school has issues. There are too many fights breaking out and teachers think they can get their point across by being sarcastic and assigning hours of homework. My daughter is in 8th grade and she usually has up to 2 hours of homework a night. I think this is extremely unreasonable and it should change. I have to tell the truth that i do appreciate some of the teachers there and i'm especially grateful for teacher's like mr. Baum and ms. Coambes. I've heard great things from my daughter about their teaching and i am glad. Overall, i think south middle is an okay school, but there's always room for improvements.

South Middle is a good middle school as far as teachers and how caring they are. The academics could be improved. My daughter has attended 6th, 7th, and is now in 8th. You have to be in accelerated Math & Science in order to get into Biology for Freshman High School (maybe), or have straight A's for your 8th grade year. My daughter enjoys the Band program and the band teacher (Yea, Mr. McKee!) BUT it really needs more performance added to it...sorry dude. Sports programs are 'intermurals' and are not long term. Lots of clubs to join in. Parents are not really involved, they do not encourage it. Overall school is best around for the area. I highly recommend it if you have to move here.
