I have had two kiddos go through Brittany. My children have both had great learning experiences and opportunities at Brittany Woods. My daughter has taken several advanced math classes, she has great teachers that offer assistance and show a true passion for student growth. With my oldest, I was able to foster a true relationship with his 8th grade team when he began to struggle. The teachers made every effort to assist him in the learning process.
There are a great deal of extracurricular activities. We have had kiddos participate in basketball, soccer, field hockey, baseball, track, baseball, and more academically driven afterschool programs like computer programming and robotics. I have been pleased with the choice we made to send our children to Brittany Woods.
My daughter is a part of the school's anit-bullying coalition. She has had the opportunity to visit other schools and work with other schools and students within her own school to strengthen anti-bullying.
The leadership is relatively new. However, great changes have been implemented, and it is obvious that there is a clear plan. The leadership is working to build effective communication with parents and this is vital.
The school has a partnership with Wash U. The program they implement is Wyman. This is such a great program that provides opportunities for volunteering and giving back. Just before winter break, there was a family fun night sponsored by Wyman students. This event raised over $1000 for Brittany Woods families in need. The kids were so proud of themselves, and individuals that know the great impact this had on individuals within the Brittany Woods community were proud as well.
We currently are implementing a one-to-one program at our middle school. This has been great for many students. Many teachers utilize google classroom and google calendars that allow parents to keep up with what assignments are do and when.
My children's experiences here have been overwhelmingly positive. The new principal Eliott Shostak is doing a great job raising the expectations and standards for the school. The teachers are engaged and caring. The new superintendent Sharonica Hardin has lots of enthusiasm and great ideas for the district. People should be sure and visit before they make their decision to send their child somewhere else. I think you will be pleasantly surprised.
Be sure to base your opinion on a school on more than a test score -- the issues that are faced by UCity schools are further reaching than how well a student can score on a standardized test and our school community is so much more than our "number" on a website.
We have two students in/through Brittany Woods, and we have had a great experience with both of them.
They have taken advantage of the sports and music opportunities presented to them, as well as the off-campus learning with Wash U engineering, community service with Wyman, 8th grade Spring Break trip to Europe, and programs with Junior Achievement and the Gifted Resource Council -- all programs that were introduced to us from the amazing teachers at BWMS. After school activities are good, and the teachers try and offer opportunities across lots of interests.
With the new administration team brought in a few years back -- the focus of the staff is right-on, and we are thrilled with the improvements we keep seeing. The staff is top-notch -- we love all of the teachers we have had -- they have continually gone above-and-beyond to work with our kids and they know them one-on-one..... we are very much looking forward to the upcoming conferences because it feels good that the teachers KNOW our kids and give them individual attention. Can't say enough good things about the teaching teams.
When people hear we live in UCity, they always ask where we send our kids -- and we are happy & proud to say they go to Brittany and the High School.
Talk to the staff.... walk in the building.... sit in on a GATE class.... talk to the librarian.
Don't base your opinions on "what you've heard" -- the more families that take advantage of UCity schools -- the better they get for everyone.
(and the new Superintendent is doing wonderful things for the school and the district as well.... looking forward to seeing even more positive changes for UCity)
We didn't know what to expect but are really pleased with the middle school. They brought in new administration two years ago and they have made an incredible difference. The GATE teacher is so enthusiastic and innovative. I truly believe that if more families in the community gave the school a try they would be pleasantly surprised.
I am a students at Britney. The fights are really scary. I wouldn't send a kid here if you have another option. The principals, and some of the newer staff are good, but the school is so violent and there is no respect for each other, the rules, or teachers. Ambulances and police are called because of the fights sometimes.
