In 2010-2011 Michigan used the Michigan Educational Assessment Program (MEAP) to test students in grades 3 through 8 in math, reading and writing; in grades 5 and 8 in science; and in grades 6 and 9 in social studies.
Unlike public schools, private schools are not required to give the MEAP, but some do on a voluntary basis. State averages displayed on private school profiles include private schools only.
The MEAP is a standards-based test, which means it measures how well students are mastering specific skills defined for each grade by the state of Michigan.
The goal is for all students to score at or above the proficient level.
In 2007-2008, Michigan used the Education YES! Grades to measure school performance.
Education YES! Grades are based on student performance on the Michigan Educational Assessment Program (MEAP) and Michigan Merit Examination (MME), whether performance is improving or declining, and the school's self-rating on Indicators of School Performance.
Schools receive a grade of A, B, C, D-Alert or Unaccredited.
