I disagree with the review below. My husband and I work full-time, and the school and after-care are very accommodating for us. You just have to make the effort to talk with the school about your needs. We love Holy Cross -- the teachers are excellent, the families and children are very friendly, and our child has learned so much there. We would not think of sending our kids anywhere else.
Be warned -- although this school touts its after-care program, it is nearly impossible to get in. Our child has been on the waiting list for more than a year. Also, the art programs are no longer full-time. This is a very nice school, perfect for stay-at-home moms. Not very accommodating for working parents, however.
This school is highly recommended for quality education for preschool through the eighth grade. Curriculum includes all of the basics, in addition to an excellent fine arts program, with art and music teachers on staff. Extracurricular activities offered include a wide range of sports, band, choir, academic booster club programs such as chess club and others. The faculty is passionate about their professions and the care and concern for the students is very evident. Teachers implement the Discipline With Purpose program which was designed to help students become self disciplined. It includes fifteen life skills that are taught and practiced in school and at home: Listening, Following Instructions, Asking Questions, Sharing, Social Skills, Cooperation, Reasons for Rules, Completing a Task, Leadership, Communication, Organizing Time, Working with Others to Resolve Problems, Initiating Solutions to Problems, Separating Fact from Feeling and Serving Others. Students learn respect and concern for others.
Holy Cross Elementary School has offered an excellent education for my children which has provided a great foundation for high school, college and grad school. My oldest son is at Harvard Law School and my other son and daughter are at Creighton University and all three have earned academic scholarships.
Our family has been very happy with Holy Cross. Our oldest daughter has been there since preschool and will be graduating from the 8th grade this May. The small class sizes ensure indivudual attention to every student. The teachers and principal are so dedicated and take a personal interest in the children and their families. The school has full time art, music and PE teachers as well as an intensive phonics and reading program. The junior high students are able to take advanced math classes and spanish. The before-school and after- school day care make Holy Cross very accomodating for working parents. The location is also close to the downtown and midtown areas--which make it easy for us to leave work to attend school programs or have lunch with our children. We also love the emphasis on 'service to others' that Holy Cross has embedded in our kids.
