This school is absolutely wonderful if you have a child that fits the mold. I have two children one with special needs (classroom inclusion) and the other in general ed classes. My child does not always bring homework home (it gets lost before leaving class) and we spend HOURS upon HOURS trying to get through the additional required materials - Jiji and Study Island (which I feel is a big waste of time and the kids hate the programs). I get unsatisfactory notices every time they are sent out and every period the comments are the same. Focus on Jiji and Study Island and your child will improve. Well...the bottom line is these computer programs do not work for every child. I don't think the teachers know what to do with kids that don't fit into the mold. I do not blame the teachers. They are very hard working and I understand they do not have the time to allocate to each child with problems. My child has an IEP and even that does not seem to make a difference. I am a very hands on parent, but the system ties my hands at every turn. Communications at this school are dreadful. I never know about anything until the night before, which makes it impossible to plan ahead.

Not sure where the previous reviewer got her information, but my children have homework each night. They are required to do their homework & read each & every night. Sewell ES is an excellent school. The teachers are the reason it is exceptional. They truly care about our children! They are caring & hard working. The 5th grade team are the best group of teachers. They have created an environment where out 5th grade students are very well prepared for Jr. High/Middle School. The teachers are really the "shining stars" of this school! Thank you Sewell teachers & staff.

I have two kids that are in Speical needs classes and one that is in GE. There are way to many kids in each class room. Kids don't come home with homework. No one can return a phone call or email. This is not a good school. I had to pull out one of my kids. Due to he wasn't getting the help that he needed. And now I am pulling my other two.

C. T. Sewell Empowerment Elementary School's vision is "Kids First" and they mean it in everything they do. My child's needs, academic, social and emotional are at the forefront of everything the teachers and administrators do. The school focuses on building community from students to teachers to parents to community businesses and on creating life-long learners in all academic areas. My child as a young, 5 year old kindergartener, knows all of his letters and sounds, is beginning to read some sight words and can count to 20. And it's only October! Imagine what he will be doing by the time he goes into first grade!

Congratulations to Dr. Carrie Larson for being awarded the Milken Award! She was one of only 2 Nevada educators selected to win this national award! She completely deserves it for all that she has done for our school! We truly are a family and she has been a major force in molding and shaping this school into this great thing that it is today. We are lucky to have her! In response to the post on December, 19th...teachers come and go from any school in this district from year-to-year. Our school is no acception. It's just the nature of this school district. The staff that we have now is fastastic and we're happy to be here!

A lot of teachers left from last year and the school as a whole seems to struggle keeping good teachers. I have also noticed office staff leaving. Just doesnt seem to be a stable learning environment with so many changes.

Carrie Larsen has done amazing things for our school. She has worked tirelessly to get community partners to sponsor our school to make improvements for our students. The teachers that we have been blessed with are outstanding! Mr. Stufflick is truly interested in our child's success! They have special science and literacy nights which the kids' love. Parents are encouraged to volunteer in classrooms, activities and parent groups. They have implemented new after school release procedures to keep kids safer after school is out. I am proud to be a parent of CT Sewell students!!

I do also want to say, that throughout my nine years here I have also seen a bigger faction of positive, dedicated and encouraging parents than anything else. I want to thank those people that are always willing to work hard for the good of their childrenand their school. If they are not sure on something they ask questions and get involved. Constructive not destructive criticism is always welcome. You have made Sewell an enjoyable place to be. Thank you for your input, your ideas and your involvement with our school, no matter how great or small.

The teachers are genuinely concerned with the growth of their students. The Administration is honestly passionate about the success of the school. It's a shame to see so little parent involvement in their childrens school. PTA and Parent for Student meetings are poorly attended. These educators truely care about their students. We have great teachers and staff at our school! As a parent I am very active in my children's education both at school and at home. But when you mention PTA and Parents 4 Teachers this is a waste of time. The only items that are ever talked about are about the 'Empowerment', or watching students perform in one way or another (which the students are great!!!) But when you are taking time out of your busy day for a meeting, I expect the meeting to start on time and get to the point, and please talk about something different than 'Empowerment'! I have never seen a Principal treat their staff and parents the way that Dr. Larson does. She goes on rampages and screams at these people as if she is better than they are. What about 'We Are Family' and 'Don't Be a Bully Be a Friend'.

My grandson attends C.T. Sewell Elementary. We are impressed with the attention that each student receives not only from their own teacher but from everyone on the staff including the Principal whose vivaciousness and enthusiasm for her school and 'her' students is exemplary. Their After-School Program is outstanding and the mix of students, from all walks of life and ethnicity, allows for the exchange of culture and the appreciation of each other as individuals. As a parent whose 4 children attended private schools, I applaud C.T. Sewell!

Sewell has an outstanding staff and Administration. We Have been working with several companies to promote Literacy in our neighborhood, including sending EVERY STUDENT from our school home with 5 new books recently. We have before and after school and in-class interventions too work with struggling students. No Child Left Behind.!

My child is very proud to be part of the amazing family at C.T. Sewell! She is invested in learning and is excited to go to school every day! The 'family' of teachers, staff, and administration truly put kids first, and like the energizer bunny, never stop working for their community. The selfless commitments, the extra curricular activities, the PTA and Parent 4 Student involvement, and the community outreach programs available on campus (esp. when we get our new Sewell Neighborhood Family Center) prove that this school is about its family and ensuring a safe loving environment for all to learn. Because of this commitment, we are a High Achieiving school, and I am very proud to be a part of Team Sewell!

I am very proud that my child goes to C.T. Sewell. The teachers, administration especially the principal are amazing and take the time to learn the parents and childs name within the first week of school. Communication is a two way street if you feel that you do not know what is going on in your childs life maybe you need to pay attention, get involved, ask questions rather use this website as your voice. I have been involved in as much stuff possible here at the school. I agree there are lots of fundraisers, but if you have an issue with them then do not participate. With the test scores, you can not be perfect overnight and any improvement is great. The real issue is what are parents doing at home to help there child succeed because the staff at CT Sewell are doing a great job! keep it up!

I am PROUD to be a teacher at C.T. Sewell! I have held teaching positions at other schools in the district and Sewell outshines them all! The teachers work hard each day to put KIDS FIRST and to positively impact our students' learning enviornment. We have seen so much improvement in our students. We are proud of them and proud to be part of Team Sewell!

At Sewell, we work as a team. Every member of the team plays an integral part and no one is taken for granted, including the parents. Whether it s through volunteering in the classroom or helping children with their assignments at home, we whole-heartedly appreciate the hard work from our community in making our students successful. Successful students = a successful community. The teachers at Sewell are some of the best in the district. I am thankful to be a member of the Sewell family. The teachers and staff that call Sewell HOME do so with pleasure and pride.

I am a teacher at C.T. Sewell. I love working here. I think our school and community is great. I love the children, parents, and staff. Everyone wants what is best for the kids and that is what we try to give them. By working together we can make a difference. We have the best students, parents, admin., and staff. C.T. Sewell is a great school.

This school is all about appearences. If parents, teachers, and staff would stand together something could be accomplished. As long as the students perform on tests, integrity is thrown out the window. This has been the most tense year, and my student has attended a few yearsl The teachers rarely smile, there seems to be no enjoyment. There are too many fundraisers, and yet the teachers don't have adequate supplies, textbooks, or even paper! The community center going in...Just another feather in the cap of administration...who's going to maintain it? The teachers have so much as it is, yet I'm sure they will be the ones made responsible. The office staff is incredible. I am always greeted with a smile and felt welcome.

I am torn on my opinion of CT Sewell. I have several children there. The teachers are fantastic! I have loved every teacher that my children have had. On the other hand, the administration is not so good. I believe they are just trying to make themselves look good. We have moved around a lot and have never felt so unwelcome as I do at this school. The principal is really into fund raising. We have at least one a month--I feel it is too many. Where is all the money going? I think the security is all superficial and needs improvement.

I need to clarify a comment that was posted on September 28. The school is NOT considered a 'High Achieving' school but is actually an 'At Risk' school, this was presented to the parents at an open house last year. Half of the teachers left the school after the 2006-2007 school year because of issues and difficulties with the staff. Also the office manager left at the start of the year due to issues that could not be resolved with the administration. Because the school is an empowerment school, all teachers will have to reapply for their position at the end of the year, no matter of their years of experience or relationships with the students. How would you like it if you had to reapply for your own job every year? Doesn't make sense to me.

Dont be Deceived by Larsons Smoke and Mirror show on test scores! The school is NOT considered High Achiveing because of High Test scores rather, because of a slight percentage increase on CRTs from 06 to 07. Look at actual test scores, Very UNIMPRESSIVE! 5th grade writing test NAWE 69% are below standard-103 tested 71 are below-3rd grade Math CRT 112 tested 46% are below standard thats 52 students, almost half. 4th grade Language ITBS results 52% are below standard out of 123 tested 64, over half are below standard. Look at the schools accountablilty report at nevadareportcard.com. So what if you get free babysitting before and after school. What quality of education is your child actually getting. I love the teachers at this school and I know they are doing the best job they can, inspite of the leadership, Not because of it! Is Sewell really 'The Best'?

C.T. Sewell is the best! I love the fact that my daughter is able to do before and after school activities for free! They offer both academic and fun things to do. There are at least 15 teachers who stay after school everyday to help with these programs (how many other elementary school can say that)? I am also extremely happy that Dr.Larson has addressed security and safety issues around the campus. In the past anyone could walk on campus without getting a pass. Now, Dr. Larson has put a procedure in place were all parents must have a lanyard ID in order to be on campus. Now, as I come on campus, I know who is supposed to be there and who is not! I know this is one step in many that will provide our students with a safe and secure environment. I want to thank the entire Sewell staff for being extremely dedicated to our students everyday! What you do does not go unnoticed!

As a parent and a professional in the community I am appalled and amazed about the reviews I have read. Here is what I have seen as a parent of two C.T.Sewell children. First and foremost, the school has started to address security concerns by requesting badges as people enter. All of this was explained at numerous events and parent meetings. This is a school where only 6 women were involved and now many parents feel welcome. The best part, the school is only one of a select few in the CCSD to be named 'High Achieving.' Wow What an improvement! After-school activities are provided to my children and I love the teachers!

This school is a very great school for the neighborhood! it is also very old like 52 years. The principal actually took her time to form a temporary group p4s to help with the fundraising aspect. This school is improving on all test scores and in every way that is why they got 500,000 grant to help everyone's kids. I urge all the parents to attend a meeting!

I agree with the last comments. I do not trust the Principal. In my experience as a volunteer parent, she has made me unwelcome at the school! The PTA board has stepped down due to the difficulties of working with the principal. She has denied zone variances for kids who have recently moved, but only have one year left at the school and have attended since kindergarten. She is not for the community.

The Principal is more concerned with appearances than actual productivity. She seems confused and more into promoting herself than actually being concerned with the students best interest. I believe she is trying to do too many things at once and not succeeding in anything. Very unclear as to her direction for the school, other than to promote herself! Academics have not changed for the better. Very disappointed with the school this year. I was much happier with the school as a whole in past years.

The teachers are good. The school Councelor, Mrs. Fairless is very vocal and will give her opinion about parents and students to anyone who asks. She is the principals right hand man. She tells parents what she thinks they want to hear. Communication between the office staff and the administration is horrible. They will all tell parents something different. I am very dissapointed with the fact that the entire PTA has quit, some of whom have Volunteered at this school for as many as 9 years. I think the fact they all are willing to leave rather than work with this principal says a lot!

We spent all our elementary years here, my last is now in her 5th grade. Both daughters have excelled academically, 1 participates in GATE. Art and music programs are alive and well. Lots of parents around and PTA is very active. Older school, I really like the setup. Principal is active and has raised the standards of student involvement, behavior and academics. School uniforms are required, but uniforms have pretty loose guidelines. Uniforms are a good thing. I love this school.

This school is a 10 all around. One teacher in particular helped our daughter improve immensely with her social skills, reading, etc... Mrs. Cameron Ficarrotta was one who will stay with our daughter for ever. We will continue to repay her with our homemade hot pepper mix. We moved and had to put elisha in Cunningham Elem. and she seemed to take 10 giant leaps backward in her attitude and grades. This coming year I will do whatever I have to do to get her back into C.T Sewell. Besides we miss Heather in the front office too.
