Academic focus and philosophy

Educational philosophy and approach to learning FMS was founded to provide children ages 3 through 13 with an exceptional private school that reaches the whole child, providing an educational environment that is at once nurturing, respectful, challenging and inspiring. Our program is based on the time-tested, well-balanced principles of the Montessori method of education based on the work of Dr. Maria Montessori. It is a system of education using observation of a child's development to individualize curriculum to meet the child's needs.

Parent involvement details At FMS, we consider ourselves a coummunity where parents and teachers work together for the children. To that end, we have an active Parent Teacher Organization, encourage classroom volunteers, classroom observations, and hold many community building events and family functions. We also have parent education nights, newsletters, complimentary Montessori magazine subscriptions and many other venues for helping parents be a part of the FMS community.
Approach to addressing and preventing bullying FMS strives for a calm and satisfying environment. Classroom rules center on respect for others and our school environment. Grace and courtesy are part of our curriculum, in addition to active instruction in peacemaking and conflict resolution. We also encourage parents to learn Dr. Maria Montessori's philosophy to support their child in a positive manner.

Enrollment

Application/ enrollment process details FMS determines admission of a potential student based on several resources. The admissions committee reviews prior school records, previous teacher or principal recommendation, skills evaluations administered by FMS, observations of the child in the Montessori classroom environment, and the parent interview/questionnaire. Our purpose is to serve the whole child. To that end, we want to help parents make the best choice for their child to realize his/her fullest potential.
