I have gone to this school all six years and I was sad to go. I had some of the best teachers (Mrs. Swain, Clayman, Mr.Heard) (luckliy I didn't get some of the bad ones that I have seen my friends suffer through). I have seen the best pricipal go and some of the teachers too. I think that as I got older and went to middle school the qualty of the school sank....but I am glad I was there when the school had some of their best staff and money too. I will always have a place in my heart for Tomiyasu Elementary school... because some of the best years were at that school. But I guarantee that if you have kids coming there you won't be disapointed.
I find the principal inept, some teachers are fantastic (Mr. Heard) but others not so much. The school grounds are generally pretty clean. Principal should be replaced
My son is attending extended day Kindergarten at Tomiyasu. My daughter is already enrolled for the 2011-2012 school year! The teacher Mrs. Gallant is simply AMAZING! The extended day program curriculum is enhanced to include additional activities & experiences. Students will have more time to explore topics & assimilate the knowledge they have gained. Anyone remember that saying "Everything I learned about life I learned in Kindergarten"??? Give your kids the best start in their educational careers that you can and sign them up for extended day kindergarten! Open Enrollment til April 30th. (702) 799-7770 for details or register in person. Bring original Birth Certificate, shot records, last 4 of soc, proof of address (mortgage bill or lease agreement), $100 cashiers check or money order, and bank info.Zone variances accepted!!!
I went to this school in 1989 and loved it then later in 2001 completed my student teaching at this school and still loved it! The staff is uncomparable to any other and I have two kids currently in a great elementary school just miles from tomiyasu (frias elementary) and though there school is great Tomiyasu is still my favorite!
This school absolutely rocks. Unfortunately we moved to a new area this trimester, but my daughter was in Paula Gorter's 2nd Grade class until just after Christmas. She was absolutely the best teacher I've had for any of my kids. I was especially impressed with the teaching styles Ms Gorter uses with our children. She puts them in small groups making the children feel like they're getting the full attention of their teacher. My daughter's reading and spelling skills have improved dramatically this year and I have no doubt it was down to the attention and commitment Ms Gorter gave to my child. But best of all at the beginning of the year my daughter was really shy, couldn't speak to anyone and would hide behind me if an adult spoke to her. I found to my amazement she was reading aloud to the class by Christmas. Ms Gorter is amazing.
Mrs. Swain is the most wonderful kg teacher. She provides personalised care great foundation for each and every of her student my kids love her and so do i
I have two girls just starting high school and 1 boy who is now in 2nd grade at this school. It is so much better than the elementary schools my girls went to, the second grade teacher, Ms Gorter, is totally awesome. She spends time with all the kids, even during her lunch, and my little girl is now confident, helpful and best of all happy!! More teachers needs to be like her!
My daughter went to this school her whole elementary years and now my son is going, I love the school and how it feels safe, there is something about the teachers and staff that make you always feel welcome.
We have just one child left at Tomiyasu, in fourth grade. We've been there since 1999, with the other three children going all the way through, coming out well prepared for middle and high. The culture is great - respectful and welcoming. We have a phenomenal new principal this year, 'data' smart and also good with people, a rare combination. In all those years and teachers, there was only one teacher we weren't completely thrilled with (and we have high hopes that the new principal will hold accountable and either get this teacher going on the right track or out). I could go on and on about the absolute miracles all the others have made happen in our kids' lives - Mrs. Gallant, the full-day K teacher, cannot be matched. Mrs. Gardino, Mrs. Galante, Mrs. Clayman - these are just a few of the miracle workers at Tomiyasu. Great PTA too!
I have two kids at Tomiyasu. I, too, am sticking in this school zoning until my kids have all attended Tomiyasu. The school is absolutely phenomenal! Both of my daughter had Mrs. Swain. She is wonderful. One of my daughters also had Mrs. Romeo, although Mrs. Paris has taken over her class this year. I am very displeased with Mrs. Paris, but the rest of the school makes up for it. I just hope my other kids can dodge getting her as their teacher or that Mrs. Paris will have it together by then. For Kindergarten, Mrs. Swain is by far the best teacher I have ever met. The kids love her and so will you. All of the teachers welcome parents in their classroom, with the exception of Mrs. Paris. Mrs. Paris will ignore you, tell you she doesn't have time for you, etc. She's full of excuses.
I saw the comment below. My daughter had many problems with her reading and then did not want to do any homework because her teacher made it hard for her. Then my daughter went to Mrs. Romeo's class. Not only did we see a complete change in our child's attitude, but Mrs. Romeo took the time to meet with us and to offer ways for us to help at home. We were very sad to hear that Mrs. Romeo left the school recently, she was probably the best teacher there.
My daughter has attended Tomiyasu since Kindergarten. She is now in 3rd grade and although we have considered moving, I refuse to move out of this school zone. I do not want to risk her having to attend another elementary school. The principal and teachers work extraordinarily hard to ensure the quality of learning and experiences provided to the students is exemplary. The parents are encouraged to volunteer and the PTA is quite ambitious. Kudos to this 'neighborhood' school!
I attended Tomiyasu Elementary school the very first day it opened back in the early 1970's. I moved back into the neighborhood just so my daughter could attend this school. Their acceptance and appreciation of parental volunteers is just one of the many reasons I love this school. My daughter started out in Kindergarten in Mrs. Gennie Swain's class and I now concider this woman a beloved friend. She guided my daughter with the expertise of an experienced and caring teacher, and I will forever be greatful for her. I have nothing but admiration for the schools teachers and staff... I even talked my brother into taking a zone variance so his step children could attend Tomiyasu. His kids have improved dramatically since changing elementary schools to attend Tomiyasu, they were attending Jack Daily Elementary and were doing poorly in all subjects. They just love Tomiyasu and their grades are proof!
Two of our grandchildren attended Tomiyasu Elem. We have been very impressed with the education they have received. They started with Mrs. Swain as their kindergarten teacher. She is a remarkable individual. I work with her for two years as an aid. I believe that her organizational skills are a tremendous help to the students. I would rate this school 5 stars. Please, keep up the good work.
I am so grateful that my daughter attends Tomiyasu. There is a real commitment between the teachers, staff, parents, and students achieve the best education possible. As a parent volunteer, I see first hand all of the hard that is put forth by everyone. Way to go everyone!
We love the school and have been very impressed with all of the teachers. Each one has given quality time and attention to our daughter. We have experienced a real feeling of comradery with the other parents and students at the school. People seem genuinely proud of our school and grateful to the teachers. John & Regina
Our family watched a third child enter the Clark County School District this year, and, like other parents, we anticipated the beginning of a new school year with a unique set of hopes and concerns for each child. After our fourth year at Tomiyasu, we find ourselves with increasingly more hopes than concerns for our children, where they experience a unique culture of respect and excellence and benefit from the skill, professionalism and devotion of wonderful teachers. Each of our three has a different learning style and different level of academic motivation, yet the needs of all three have been well-met so far, and we have honestly marveled at their progress and the teachers personal concern for them. We have become very enthusiastic fans of the school and of the Clark County School District because of our experience so far.
I am so happy to have both of my children attend Tomiyasu. It is a great school and has the best teachers. The Honor Roll assembly lasts forever, there are so many names being read. Isn't that a wonderful thing?
