I really hate my school the Spanish teacher always says I expect more from you and never cares about the other students and another time I went to get lunch and the staff said I had to get the meatloaf even though I was going to get a burrito, cant I have my own decisions
I have been fortunate enough to have both of my children attend this magnificent school. The programs and IB structure are amazing. Sandy Miller ES is helping my children become great thinkers and risk takers as well as nurturing their ability to be balanced and caring. My children are learning Spanish, attend "clubs", are given opportunities to experience educational field trips like celebrating the arts at The Smith Center, eploring rock formations at Lehman Caves, learning how our government works in Carson City, and the wonders of the Grand Canyon. The teachers are friendly, passionate about their jobs, and welcome parental involvement. The principal is extremely cordial and approachable. She strives to make sure each child leaving Sandy Miller has the mindset they will be going to college! As for the namesake herself, Mrs. Sandy Miller, she is inspirational. Weekly she takes time from her busy schedule to spend time at the school. She reads to the kids, teaches lessons, and brings smiles to all that see her. I am so proud to be a parent and volunteer at this school. Thank you all for being such wonderful roll models and advocates for our children!!!
My daughter attended Sandy Miller and was part of the the first group of children to complete all five grades. My child will start the diploma program next year which will allow her to finish her freshman year of College as a Senior in High School. Sandy Miller's namesake had a vision for our children in Las Vegas. "It" was the approach to education that helped build a strong educational foundation for my child. The principal, staff, PTA, on-premise Girl Scout troop and after school care helped a two-parent working family help our daughter to create a dream and have the foundational tools to pursue them. We could afford a private education but would have missd out on the beautiful diversity we were afforded at this remarkable school. And, while we moved to another state we continued in The IB Program. But, we will always feel like part of "The Sandy Miller-Family". My daughter plans to study abroad her first year of college (as a sophmore) and I have no doubt she will be open-minded to the "world" that her primary years program at Sandy Miller gave her. THANK-YOU STAFF @ S. Miller! "If we don't stand up for children, then we don't stand for much." Marian Wright Edelman
The staff at this school is very helpful and caring. My son has been going to Sandy Miller going on 4 years now. Every time I have had to gather any information or needed help regarding my child the staff was very helpful!
Sandy Miller also has the best spanish teachers. Both teachers help children learn spanish. If your child already speaks spanish the teachers will teach them more about their culture, more about the language and grammar. For the people who don't speak spanish there is another spanish class that they would take. That class would start from the begging of learning spanish starting with greetings then going to colors and so on. If you want your child to know spanish then this is the right school for them.
I am a parent of 4 children, and by great luck and blessing, our 3rd son was accepted to SM his 2nd grade year, after being on a waiting list for this school for almost 2 years. My older children have also attended magnet schools and have been actively involved in the IB program from 6-12th grade, and I have nothing but praise for the IB program. I had only wished I had been able to give them the same opportunity as their brother who is now a student. The teachers are amazing and invested in our children. It is not just a "job" for them, they truly care to make a difference. My son, through 1st grade, in his regular zoned school, could have been deemed a slow learner, because he struggled with reading. I truly believe, had he remained in his zoned school, he would have fallen through the cracks. His reading levels have changed from below grade level to meeting grade level in our time with SM. Our experience at SM has been nothing but positive. Also, I am extremly impressed with Mrs. Sandy Miller herself, who is actively involved with our school, and is an advocate for our students. Her hard work and convictions are not unnoticed. Adminstration is amazing, and truly loves our kids!
This is a great school we are very please that our children are here. Theachers are always willing to help on any concerns that parents may have.
This school has nice and good working teachers and staff and give the perfect amount of learning every year but they do give a little bit of worksheets as tests or to do just to boost their brain I don't have a problem with that. Ib at this school is excellent and they learn something each day too.
Both of my children have attended Sandy Miller since 1st grade. I am also a very active volunteer at this school. I have seen so much growth in both of my children throughout the years. I could not say enough good things about this program. Being a school district employee I feel that this is one of the few schools in Las Vegas that have an open door policy. I know I can speak to the teacher everyday or even the principal. The teachers are willing to go over and beyond to help their students. All you have to do is ask. I would recommend this school to any parent.
I'm a HUGE fan of IB programs, but feel that this school falls short of achieving IB standards. Our daughter is in 1st grade and spends the first hour and 1/2 of EVERY day on mindless seat work with NO teacher intervention - is little direct math instruction, again, the teacher chooses to leave everything to worksheets. If I had wanted our daughter to learn from a worksheet, we wouldn't have chosen a magnet school with a program known for innovation and rigor. While we're thrilled with the robotics lab, Spanish class and music and art programs, the gaps that we have to fill at home are huge. We will be thinking long and hard before re-enrolling her for 2nd grade and I cannot recommend this school, or at least her teacher to any parent. This is so very sad for us.
Sandy Miller offers an exciting educational experience that has become almost non-existent in this district. The teacher's love their jobs and show pride in their school and students. The school programs and activities are continuous because of the support and engagement from everyone. At other school's I've seen it time and time again where a teacher has an idea, implements the program and then it unfortunately falls flat because of the lack of interest or support. You can definately see at this school that it is a team effort with excellent leadership and respect amongst the faculty and administration where every idea is nurtured. This is a gem in the desert!
This school has wonderful facilities, a caring principal, and excellent, well-trained teachers. We are very happy that our son is here, and that he has the opportunity to take Spanish.
Sandy Miller has been a answer to my prayers. Coming from a private school I feel this school is offering my children more academically and giving them more opportunities to be with peers of all backgrounds. I would recommend this school for any parent whom is asking themselves that hard question... public or private. I truely feel I am getting the best of both worlds. Go for it this is a great school!
School a bit above average. Too much concentration on appearances to the point that serious negative issues are hidden. Extra activities (school trips, choir and other clubs) are good, but used as threats against children. It would be nice if the administration was more interested in what was happening instead of what they want to happen. Don't count on much help if your child is 'special needs'. The experience for my child was merely ok outside of academics and, if I knew then what I know now, I might not have chosen SM for my child.
My children and I love Sandy Miller Elementary. I am an educator myself, and have been extremely pleased with the education my children are receiving.
Best school my kids went to, My son has been with the magnet program since first grade and my daughter has been there since it opened and will be graduating this year. The school really challenges my kids academically compared to regular public school (as long as you follow up of course with strong parental supervision). Extra curricular activities are plentiful, my daughter went to Carson city in 4th grade, that was fun, and right now she is in choir, which keeps her busy thruout the year. My son attended science camp which was a sleepover at the school, he enjoyed. The staff is very helpful, never a time I had a concern did they not hesitate to help. The only downfall, is the long bus ride, a sacrifice my kids don't mind.
The programs in this school are execellent. It is an elementary school so there are not many extra curricular activities for the kids, but the kids do partake in all available activities. The teachers really care about the children and all memebers of the falculty participate in no child left behind.
This is a great school! It is a magnet school. The teachers and principal are awesome! They are involved with the students and strive for higher standards and learning. New campus-just 3 years old.
