We couldn't be happier with our son's education and the staff is excellent! He has been going to Givens school since he was in Kindergarten.
We moved to the area and did a LOT of research on the different schools in the area (and left no stone unturned -- we looked at private, charter, and homeschool co-ops). We had read about how poor the schools are in Nevada, and specifically in Las Vegas, and we were apprehensive with what we would find. We were very concerned about the number of kids at Givens, and a public school education, but after a TWO HOUR conversation with the principal, I felt like the school was well-run and well staffed. Now, after being there almost two years, I can say that it is definitely worthy of it's 5 star rating. Is everything perfect? No...but there is no such thing as a perfect school. But, for our family, we are very pleased with the teachers, the administration, the PTA, everything. We are so glad that we are zoned for Givens!
This is my family s first year attending the school since we transferred from a private school. We really love it. We met the principal once over the summer and he remembered us on the first day of school. The principals, teachers and office staff are very caring and value the kids and parent input. This is a great school and well deserved of the 5 star rating. Lunchtime is a little short due to the large student population, but parent volunteers and school staff are always there to help the kids during their lunch break.
We recognize that the school is overcrowded; however, its principal, teachers and support staff are phenomenal! We're fortunate enough to be able to afford private school, but this is where we have our children going. We spent four months looking for a home in its catchment area because our children s' educational experience was the number 1 determinant in where we wanted to live. The tone of the negative ratings sounds like sour grapes; and, sadly, several of the negative ratings bear too much of a resemblance to each other. Our children s' experience has been nothing less than positive and the teachers are stellar. Yes, the school is crowded, but I couldn't agree with another reviewer, who likened it to a "well-oiled machine". The PTA is like no other with an involvement rate that would be the envy of any school in any district. It received a 5-star rating from the state, for which it's well deserved. It receives a 5-star rating from me for how they've helped educate our children. They have our heartfelt "Thank You".
Givens is an amazing school! The teachers/staff are knowledgeable and caring. My daughter loves to attend school on a daily basis. She has not had one bad experience and this is starting her third year at this school. The only thing Givens needs to improve on is class room sizes. I believe in order to give each student the proper attention, the class sizes should be reduced.
Very unsatisfied. Too crowded! I agree to the comment that Clark County is one of the worst in the nation. This is why there's gangs, shootings, bullying etc. You will not find this in a private school. There are few private schools that are not too expensive out there. I guess even if you live in Summerlin, public schools in Las Vegas are just not good.
I do not care how great the school is. Clark County School District is one of the worst in the nation. Most class have 25 and over children to 1 teacher. This school is way over crowded. I guess everywhere is the same. I will transfer my children to private school. I do not want to regret later on. Clark County is so absurd.
Givens is an excellent school, thei academics standards are superior to what I have experience with my older child that didn't attend Givens. The teachers are great, my child has not have one bad experience since he first started. Even for a kid with physical and developmental challenges, he has thrived. I couldn't be happier. It is overcrowded, hope this is something that can be solved in the future.
Due to the school being overcrowded, my son doesn't get the attention he needed. I do not normally say any mean things, but it is like everyday, this school surprise me. Too many children and there are not enough staff to watch the children. Poor children, at the end, they are the ones who has to go through this. I can't bear to see my son not to learn anything because the staff can't provide fair attention because there are too many children. My son is moving to a private school. I'd rather invest in his education now and see him succeed in the future before it's too late. I agree with the comment about the private school, if there are more than 20 children in 1 class, you will always see that there are 2 teachers in the same class to give enough attention to the children. I know this because I went and check private schools and felt relieved with what I saw. My son is definitely moving.
Yes the school is crowded because EVERYONE wants their kids in this school!!! There are so many that are not zoned for Givens but circumventing the system to enroll their children in this great school. It's a shame because it is crowded. They should require more than a 'lease agreement' to enroll children.
This school has a few really great teachers but it has become so overcrowed in the last 2 years that my child does not get the attention she needs. They do not have enough staff to teach the children in the type of environment they need to prosper. My child was injured recently due to so many children in the morning tampling her to get to classes. She was sent to the nurse, who put a banaid on it and let her return to class there was no incident report filed and I was unaware my child suffered an injury until I picked her up in the afternoon. There is just too many children and not enough responsible staff to take care of them. in the end the children suffer. My child will be attending another school.
Warning! If you have the opportunity to send your child(ren) to any other school than this one, please do so. It is a phenomenal school, with a dedicated administration and staff, as well as wonderful teachers, however, it is crippled by severe over-crowding with no relief and only ever more over-crowding in sight. Givens is the largest elementary school in the district, and, quite possibly, the state. It is projected to have a record of over 1200 students next year. Notwithstanding this increase, it is expecting to lose 5-7 teachers next year due to budget constraints! Neighboring elementary schools like Staton and Goolsby are at approximately 850 students. Although parents were told that Givens did not get the new CCSD 5-star rating this year because the school could not show sufficient improvement due to the school's already outstanding test scores, Givens was the only Summerlin-area elementary school that did not receive a 5-star rating. Teachers are not reaching past years' academic goals due to large class sizes. The cafeteria is a nightmare during all 4 lunch shifts. Kids are squeezed shoulder to shoulder facing the backs of the next row of students.
Linda Givens is a great school! If your child gets to have story and snack with Linda herself, you will know why this school gets a 10. The teachers are excellent!
This school is very organized and consistent. There are many experinced and qualified teachers at this school. The parents care and it shows because they really get involved with school activities and are generous with their donations. It's a shame there is not more funding in the district because this school is way over crowded. It is very difficult to access the school during the morning and afternoon hours. I can only imagine what its like being a student in one of the classrooms. How can Clark County be spending so much per student when these kids are being herded in like cattle? Yet, somehow Givens maintains some of the highest test scores in the valley. If you can afford it, pay for private schooling. The problems in this school district won't be fixed anytime soon.
Guess you can't choose who your child has for a teacher, beware and listen to your children.
My son has attended both Staton and Givehs schools.Any parent would be lucky to have there child enrolled in either one.But I think the PTO and parent envolment is stronger at Staton. That being satd both schools are high quality
As a substitute teacher I have the opportunity to see schools throughout the district. The teachers in this school are complete professionals and the school is run like a well oiled machine. It is amazing how well organized it is. The kids know what is expected of them and I am always amazed when I sub for a class, the students just get to work w/ minimal direction. A+ for Givens!
My son has attended from K-2nd and it's been a wonderful experience. I love the Givens encourages a strong school spirit and parent involvement. Their biggest agenda I've seen is they encourage the students (and parents) to read.
I agree with the other review regarding the Principal. I will be glad when my child is out of this school!
Givens Elementary- My daugther was enrolled in a fine Private school from grades K-3. I was told by many people that Givens was very much like the private school that my child was attending. I decided to enrol my daughter at Givens because of the high test scores, the '10' rating and the rep it has for academic excellence and strong parental involvement. Givens was exactly what I was looking for. This school has been able to give my child everything that she was getting at the private school. All year, I was impressed with the academic demand. I was suprised at the small class size of 23 students . This year my daughter was awarded for her hard work and academic excellence (unlike many private schools) and the validation will continue to encourage her and highten her interest and dedication for achievement in school. A+
