Almost all of the teachers I've had over my 7.5 years at this school have been outstanding. They care, and they're really, really smart. Mediocre teachers are generally phased out after a year or two, because of end-of-year reviews, where students and parents can voice their opinions of various aspects of the school, including teachers.
People complain about the homework load here too much, especially parents. What they don't realize is that their kid isn't getting too much homework, they just don't know how to manage their time properly. It's actually really frustrating when I hear of a 7th grader complaining about too much homework, when I can guarantee they don't have nearly as much as me. People at this school can have a huge entitlement issue, and it often stems from the parents. If students use their time properly, and take advantage of resources, homework really isn't that big of an issue.
There's a lot of competition to be the best. Everyone is ashamed of doing worse than their peers, so cheating can be an inherent part of the experience here. Despite this, the school does a good job of trying to keep this to a minimum. Cheating almost always occurs out of desperation rather than laziness. However, despite the occasional occurrence of cheating, the student body tends to be fairly honest.
Not everything is perfect, but teachers and administration really care, that's what matters. Sometimes it can be annoying watching kids get coddled or treated with favoritism, but it's all out of love, and that's really rare.
The Director of the school, the teachers, counsellors & staff work as a team to bring out the best in the students, in every way. They all genuinely care and are wonderful teachers and people. The teaching is at an excellent standard. Individual differences are considered and nurtured. My son is happy!
The teachers are nice and want to see their students succeed. The facilities are the best, we can get delicious food from the Overlook. There are many classes and electives to take. I am so grateful I got into this school. It is the best.
The Davidson Academy is a very fine school that caters to extremely bright kids who are eager to learn. It is one of the only such places in the country. I believe that its founders were very interested in helping an unrepresented minority, which are the profoundly gifted. Few seem to think that very bright students need an institution such as DA. However, unless bright kids are given challenges and kept motivated, they can soon lose interest in education. Differentiated learning, which caters to the abilities of the various degrees of the students' ability to learn, is a rare thing these days. DA has some extremely excellent teachers who seem to really care about the welfare and education of their students. They are very accessible and willing to meet with students before or after class. The environment is very conducive to learning. There is also no bullying here that we have experienced. The kids respect each other and it is a wonderful place. Our child is extremely fond of the school. Can't say enough about it.
Dear Parents , we are prospective parents of a very hard working gifted student. Can anyone plz give me some pointers. My son will be taking the EXPLORE test ( for 6th gr) in Feb. It sounds an amazing school to send our kids to !
We moved our family ( 2000 miles) so our son can attend this school. To hear my son say "Thank you dad.I don't have to be different anymore" is priceless. He is excited to go to school. He is with his peers who think like him. He is able to progress in his subjects at his own pace. He is growing up socially as well. The community ,composed of teachers, administrators, students and parents , are very protective of the kids. Everybody is working hard to shape these kids so they can be the leaders tomorrow. We couldn't be happier.
