In the Washoe County School District, students generally attend a school in the attendance zone based on where they live. Gifted education services are available for elementary, middle and high school students, and the district has an International Baccalaureate (IB) program. High schoolers can apply to attend a magnet school, an alternative school for at-risk students or an academy that offers occupational classes.
Under the federal No Child Left Behind law, students attending a Title I school designated as “in need of improvement” have the right to attend a higher-performing school in the district. In Nevada children can attend any school in their district (called intradistrict choice) or, if the local school board permits it, a school in an adjoining district, even if they live out of state (interdistrict choice). Students can also attend charter schools. Low-income students are eligible for scholarship funding to attend private schools.
