Profile Completeness

Want to improve this school’s profile? You can!

All schools on GreatSchools begin with BASIC completeness, which includes important information like contact details and test scores. It’s up to the school community to take the next steps. As a parent or community member, you can share what you know with other families by writing a review or answering a few questions about what the school offers. As a school leader, you can upload photos, describe school programs, and more with an Official school profile.

The completeness meter moves to INTERMEDIATE, then ADVANCED, and finally HONOR ROLL as you complete the following: 10 or more reviews, at least 1 photo, and 9 program questions parents find helpful.

I am a former student of MHT, currently a sophomore at Portsmouth High School, and I can only say good things about this school. I experienced the education of a lifetime here, and I'm convinced there is no other school in the world that could have provided me with an experience even close to MHT. My teachers all provided such a perfect balance of work and play, because the school always knew how to nurture not only a good work ethic, but a good personality too. I came out of the school knowing how to truly think, and make deep emotional connections with people. Despite the last parent's snarky review, the long-standing principal is one of the best you will ever find. Please try to name just one other school where you are greeted at the door by your principal's cheerful face, and also get to learn firsthand from her in the classroom. She is a truly special woman that provided far more than just a good education. MHT prepares you for life as a whole, not just a nice report card on your fridge. Well it also does that, because I am a high honors student at PHS with grades I am proud of, thanks to MHT. All in all, it may have its quirks, but that's what makes it the gem it is. :)

MHT is a mixed bag. Although blessed with a few excellent teachers, the poor performing teachers are protected by management. My child was passed into 3rd grade with no exposure to punctuation. None. The 3rd grade teacher crammed for a month and a half to improve the NECAP scores. It worked, but at the cost of other lessons. The longtime principal leaves a lot to be desired. Parents have received a total of 3 emails from her 3/4 the way through the year. There is a persistent denial of issues that need to be addressed. While you may be greeted with a smile don't expect any actions from issues you might raise. Policies and practices are worlds apart at MHT. The 2012 "bus incident" when all 49 students were loaded onto a bus and driven off unsupervised with no one at the school knowing where or why they were going typifies the lax attitudes toward safety. If your child has ANY special needs with reading, mathematics, speech or autism (on any scale) don't expect any help, in fact be prepared to fight for help offered freely at neighboring schools. If you have a child without any needs and plenty of money for tutors this might work.

My daughter LOVES MHT. The teachers are loving and skilled educators and they have worked wonders with our daughter and all of the students. At MHT the multi-age instruction in language arts, math, science, art, music, world language and fitness is targeted to the strengths and needs of each individual child. It is a wonderful community of children, parents and teachers...with high standardized test scores and a water view!
