Learning Skills Academy is a private, non-profit day-school located on the New Hampshire seacoast serving students in grades four through twelve, ages 8 to 21. We are a small, close-knit community of nineteen qualified staff, most with multiple certifications, and up to thirty-two students.
LSA offers a comprehensive school experience; students attend classes and learn curriculum as delineated in the state's curriculum frameworks. Our programs are guided by the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) and the New Hampshire Rules for the Education of Children with Disabilities. Our policies align with federal and state regulations regarding special education, and our staff administers state-mandated assessments.
Each year, the curriculum is presented through the prism of a school-wide and year-long theme. Our 2009-2010 them is "The Faces of the Earth." Language-based instruction is used in all classes and students spend as much time as they require in our Language Lab. Individualized programs facilitate development of decoding, encoding, fluency, comprehension, visualization, and phoneme segmentation skills.
Our Speech and Language Pathologists and Occupational Therapist provide individual and group therapies, as appropriate. Friday schedules alternate between field studies which enrich the classroom curriculum and Adventurelore, an outdoor adventure-based counseling program that develops self-confidence and group cooperation skills.
