We are now in 3rd grade at Garfield and we could not be happier with the education our child receives. Our youngest will be entering Kindergarten in the fall and we are excited to finally have both our children at Garfield together. Not only does our child receive a fantastic education but all of the teachers, as well as the school's principal, are so helpful and easy to talk to. We love our community and close-knit town. We are very fortunate to live where we do and to attend a school that is looking out for our child's best interest. If you need before or after school care, the Just Kids program at Garfield is top notch. Our child is very happy there and we could not be happier with the care he receives through them.

As a parent and a teacher, I could not be happier with the education my child is getting at Garfield Elementary. The staff is caring and nurturing and the students learn a great amount in a very supportive and positive environment. My child loves it there and exclaims "There's my school! I love it!" when we pass by on evenings/weekends. It is a very small school, which lends itself to a very personalized experience. Even the crossing guard knows each student by name!

So glad to see the rating on this school increase. The teachers work very hard and they do an excellent job at encouraging the students to do the same.

I have a son at Garfield. It's a great school with an excellent staff! I am very pleased with my son's academic progress.

I have 2 children in this school. The staff is wonderful and many are key members of the district's curriculum planning teams. The small school atmosphere is much like a private school setting. The school is the district's location for the English as a Second Language students. Students get bused from other areas of the town to come to learn here. So, the test scores are a little skewed based on the ESL kids and by the very low number of students in the school. We are very happy in this school.

Despite having the best student to teacher ratio, the most money spent per student the academic scores for this school are consistently the worst of the 5 elementary schools in Collingswood (consult the NJ Dept of Education). Yet, when it comes to the end of year "field day" competitions (aka athletics) they are first. What does it tell you? Oh yes, Collingswood BOE nearly closed this school when the budget cuts hit hard in 2010.

The ratings don't do it justice. Garfield's NJ State test scores are skewed because of the large number of English-as-a-Second Language students attending the school. The reality is that this is a wonderful small school with student:teacher ratios that seem more like a private school.

My kids attend. Happy with their scores & learning. Stats include pockets of good ESL children.

I went to Garfield in grades 3-6. I learned so much. The classes were really small, everyone was so nice, and there's a lot of extra things to do like: peer mediation, flag football, student council, and safety patrol. There are also music lessons available. The parents were alos really involved! A lot of PTA meetings, and extra kid-parent things like 6th grade dinner, graduation, chinese auction, concerts, and the list goes on and on. If I had the choice to stay there and continue the rest of my education there, I would pick it in an instant.

Very good school with small class sizes. Grade 4 has only 13 students. Teachers are friendly and accessible. Activities are adequate. Overall a nice learning atmosphere.

Profile Completeness

Want to improve this school's profile?

All schools on GreatSchools begin with BASIC completeness, which includes important information like contact details and test scores. It’s up to the school community to take the next steps. As a parent or community member, you can share what you know with other families by writing a review or answering a few questions about what the school offers. As a school leader, you can upload photos, describe school programs, and more with an Official school profile.

The completeness meter moves to INTERMEDIATE, then ADVANCED, and finally HONOR ROLL as you complete the following: 10 or more reviews, at least 1 photo, and 9 program questions parents find helpful.
