The "School" itself, meaning the upper management unfortunately is not attentive to helping children with learning needs. The Gillette School is competitive and draws its attention towards rating high on standard tests and pushing students to do their best. There is nothing wrong with this, but it makes the students with learning difficulties feel less than they already do and hits their self esteem hard. The special services staff and learning consultants are wonderful but in rating the school, this could change if the staff changes. Gillette Elementary is such a small school and everything is run by the principal, who is not personable or helpful when it comes to children with special needs. The principal and the director of special services who works out of the Millington Middle School are the ones who make the decisions and are both involved in management only and are very removed from the children and their needs. The special services classes are not individualized, they are indeed "one size fits all." Unfortunately, no matter how wonderful an individual teacher may be, there is only so much they can do without the upper management support.

I like that Gillette Elementary is a small quaint school. The teachers do a fine job. I do not like that every single decision must be run by the principal who is not personable and unfortunately not in touch with the children's needs. This school still allows birthday parties and many cupcakes, etc. to be brought in and this excludes many children with allergies. This school also pushes too hard to be top rating and could be more sensitive and attentive to children with additional learning needs. Communication is definitely lacking in this area, so much that the law has been broken by not responding to evaluation requests in the time allotted by state law, etc.

I can't say enough about how wonderful this school is. The teachers and administrators bend over backwards to do everything thing they can to give each child exactly what they need. This is the warm, nurturing place you dream will be your child's first experience with school. My son has learned so much and has been so happy there!

Oops! We currently do not have any test score information for this school. Public and charter school test scores for most states come from the state Department of Education. The most common reasons we might not have this data are either that not enough students took the test or that the school was recently opened, and its scores have not yet been reported.
