South Hunterdon Regional High School

$20 Million in renovations? Are you kidding me? Where did it go? We took our high achieving son out of South because it DOESN'T offer anything of value to the students! Then we were called by the school and begged to keep him in South! Maybe the money should have been invested in compeditive classes for the kids. The graduating class size is small for a reason, no one wants to go to SHRHS. It can offer nothing that Central can and when parents of SHRHS start to look at going to college for their children they will relize that their children have missed out a A LOT of classes that other chidlren have taken that South have never offered. South has a long way to go and doesn't look like its going to ever change. South offers nothing to children of special needs and are closed minded. Removing our son was the best thing we have ever done for him, he is in the top 10% of his class nationally and could NEVER have been ranked that high by going to South. Good luck to those parents who think South is best thing, open your eyes and see what your kids are missing!

This school just has the great small school experience, the students have the close relationship with their teachers. The sports are the same way. I am a tuition student to South Hunterdon and I completely enjoyed every minute spent at the school.

I am a student attending South and I hope this will not prevent my review from be posted. South's teachers are wonderful. They are generally fair, enthusiastic, experienced, and willing to help their students when they need assistance. No complaints there. Despite the teachers' skills (and hospitality,) my first years were extremely difficult. Kids of minority/mixed ethnic backgrounds are given quite a hard time by their peers. This is no fault of the school's and the staff did try to help with the bullying at first. It progressed and got worse. The 'affirmative actions' officers abandoned us when our problems became inconvenient for them. Harassment problems in this school are downplayed unacceptably. The staff is constantly raving about how 'kind' and 'considerate' members of the student body act toward one another. Discipline is not used appropriately. I rate this school 2.5/5 stars. We've got a long way to go.

I have a child who attends South. I have been very happy with the teachers and the administration there. This is a good school, with great teachers and really good kids. I feel that my child is getting a great education there.

I am a parent of a student & former student myself. My experience w/SHR was not really pleasant. Teachers showed bias (both negative & positive) based on their experiences w/my parents or former family that attended. Luckily that has changed. There is really not many special programs for children needing extra help & the school doesn't seem very interested in developing any to help keep them at SHR instead of sending them to an 'alternative' school. The block scheduling they have now is ridiculous as well. If your child needs 'help' this is not the school for them. That unfortunately hasn't changed in the many years since i graduated. The teachers & Child Study team are nice & try to be helpful but just don't know how sometimes.

SHRHS has demonstrated the ability to support high achieving students, by providing high quality education to those who are very motivated, from dedicated and highly qualified teachers. And as a result, and contrary to a previous commenter, high achieving students from South are accepted at many of the top colleges around the country. As a parent, I know this to be true. My own two children have succeeded very well, thanks to their teachers. As a small school, South certainly cannot be expected to provide every possible opportunity that larger schools can. But, my kids attended the highest level courses offered at South, including AP courses. Consequently they have both been accepted at their colleges of choice, and at other highly selective private colleges, receiving individual 4yr scholarship offerings in excess of $100K. What more can a parent hope for?

We are parents of an 8th grader at SHRHS and we are very happy with the education our daughter is recieving. She is challenged academically, she is doing meaningful work, her teachers are excellent,and she is involved in extracurriclar activities including sports and clubs. Plus she has a great group of peers. Other parents we know are also very happy with SHRHS and believe SHRHS is preparing our kids for college. In fact, in recent newlsetter SHRHS seniors have been accepted to schools such as Gerogetown, Boston University, Philadelphia College of Pharmacy, American University, and LaSalle. Since SHRHS is such a small school 350 kids in 7-12, the teachers and administration really get to know the kids--we beleive this is a very important during the teen years. SHRHS is a true community based public school.

I am a current student at South Hunterdon and cannot believe that I have to leave at the end of this year. Yes, scheduling is sometimes a nightmare and yes, being a small school means that our class choices aren't the greatest. But there are six AP classes offered, one of which was just created this year along with such classes as Science in Cinema, Animal Science, and Intro the Music. There is an honors track for nearly every subject and the addition of new courses demonstrates the school s effort to diversify our curriculum. And teachers at South Hunterdon know every single one of their students, seeing as the class sizes are about 2 to 12 students. I cannot rate South Hunterdon as anything other than excellent. If a student chooses to take advantage of South, they can receive a great education and also be extremely involved.

I am quite stunned by your comments...not so much for the content but for the grammar. I find South to be an excellent school. My children are recieving a great education and are involved in many activies. They are also in Honors/AP classes. The teachers are very involed with the students and are easily contacted when needed.
