The beauty of the Normandy Park School is in the family oriented atmosphere. The parents contribute on every level. They volunteer time, money, expertise, equipment, food etc or whatever may be needed to foster learning. I have 3 children that have been at Normandy since kindergarten. The staff is open to parent involvement and responsive to feedback. They put the best interests of the child first. The children are taught about working together as a part of the community. They are provided with opportunities to meet authors and professionals from various fields. Self reliance is encouraged and fostered by the "Olders" in each class level. The report cards initially seem daunting until you realize that they focus on the particular skills of each child, noting those skills that each student has mastered, has in progress and/or those skills that need additional support. After 7 years at the school and 1 child who has moved on to middle school, a fifth grader that is one the way out and a soon to be 4th grader I look back happy we chose Normandy.
My son attended Normandy Park and it was wonderfully nurturing and challenging based on the individual student's capabilities
My daughter is in the second grade now. She loves her school a lot. I am very happy with the school too. My daughter loves it the multiage concept. She is very proud to be in the older group. She likes explaining things and working in groups. Also I like the situation when she will have next year the same teacher and about 10 kids from this year. It reduces stress in the beginning of the school year. School atmosphere is very friendly and warm.
My children started at this school in kindergarten and I had reservations about the multiage concept. Well my concerns all came true. The concept of older children being roll models for younger children simply does not work. The older children are hampered by the younger ones while they are trying to complete school projects / work. The smarter children get bored very quickly and lets not forget they are children and don't need the pressure of teachers and fellow students to be perfect roll models. Unfortunately, for the children the teachers are attempting to teach two classes at the same time which takes away valueable time needed to help children who require it. The classes are the largest in the district and common sense would suggest that no elementry school teacher can truly cover all the bases teaching two grades simultaneously.
You can't top this school in terms of a highly stimulating, nurturing environment where children have endless options available to them. The fabulous principal insures that every teacher performs up to his or her best ability. Consequently, even shy children are empowered to contribute and all feel safe and well cared for.
