how much should i contribute for class party

Hi All,
My daughter is in 3rd grade and i have received a letter for the class party and teacher's gift. This is the first year for my daughter in USA. Can you please suggest the amount that i should send for the class party and teacher's gift. Sorry for posting this late, but it would be great if you can send the response at the earliest as i need to send the amount tomorrow morning.

Hi. I'm not in NJ, but I used to be a "room mom," and while there may be variations in cost of living from state-to-state, I don't think anyone expects parents to give large amounts. When I was organizing parties, I usually asked if people wanted to donate a specific item (like holiday cups or plates and napkins, juice boxes, etc) OR contribute money to the party, but maybe it's just easier for the coordinator of your child's class to request money and buy everything themselves, so there are no duplicate items, or no items that people promise to bring, but forget. I would think sending $5.00 is more than adequate for the party.
Similarly, I think another $5.00 towards a teacher's gift is plenty, because it will be combined with other family donations, and the total for the class will be a larger amount.
In summary, I would send $10.00 total, if you can afford it. Some parents may send more money, but I'm sure others may be without jobs and perhaps don't contribute, but hopefully everyone will still have a nice party and the teacher will also have a special gift.34826
