My children enjoyed their first year at Voorhees. They had many fun activities for both students and families throughout the school year. It was great to see them want to go to school every morning! The school is small compared to most, so they were able to make close friendships quickly. From a teacher's perspective, their reading, writing and math is where its supposed to be. In fact, they continue to impress me from time to time. We are looking forward to a new school year at Voorhees!

Teacher effectiveness: Effective

Anytime I had a question or concern the teachers responded to my emails quickly and to my satisfaction.

Amount of homework: Just right
August 24, 2015
For my children, the amount of homework given was just right. Too much homework would have taken time way from physical activities, which they also need to stay healthy.

Both of my children are dedicated to completing their homework daily. In fact, they were upset they didn't have homework on Saturday and Sunday!

Part of the curriculum at Voorhees is set aside to teach students about character and how to treat others.

I don't think this is the case at Voorhees now, but teachers were really dedicated years ago to develop good learning skills, persistence, and determination to succeed in their students. Now I have a feeling they are just coming to work to get salary.

The school has definitely deteriorated over the years since my older child went there. Teachers do not care as much about the kids, they are not as dedicated, and quality of education gone down tremendously. Instead of bringing children to the level of the strongest students, they bring smart kids down to make the weak students feel good about themselves. I guess this is what "No child left behind" is about in Voorhees terms.

Unless you are a PTA committee mom milling around the school all day, your child will not be treated with fairness, even if he/she is getting all A'a and B's and participating actively in school's life. This was the case with both of my kids at Voorhees and left me feeling very bitter about this school. Oh, and be prepared being "stamped" with "special needs" child, if you kid is quiet, reserved, and not in the teachers face all the time. Had to fight for my little introvert A-B student not to be thrown into special ed class!

We have a wonderful principal(this will be her third year) and from day one she was involved, welcoming and warm. She makes it a point to know every kids name and as many parents as she can. The teachers ar wonderful and easy to talk to. We also have an amazing PTA that puts together so many fun things for the kids and their families. This is definitely Old Bridges' 'little secret' school.

The teachers at the school really take and interest in their students. The only thing lacking is that there are not many after school activities for the children.

We moved from Staten Island and our daughter started attending Voorhees in the 2nd grade. So far (after 4+ months), we can only see good things. This is a small, involved, caring school. Our daughter's teacher is Wonderful! She really seems to be dedicated and loves what she does. She made our daughter feel welcome and comfortable since day one. They sometimes break down the class into smaller groups for math, or reading, etc., so if your child is lacking or advanced, they move ahead very nicely. Extra classes like speech, actually concentrate on your child's specific speech needs-very unlike NY. Every day she has a 'special' - gym, arts and crafts, music, spanish, etc. There has been poem readings, costume parades, bingo night bringing the parents and kids together for fun. My girlfriend also moved here from SI and loves the school. She likes the before and after school program.

Want to improve this school's profile?

All schools on GreatSchools begin with BASIC completeness, which includes important information like contact details and test scores. It’s up to the school community to take the next steps. As a parent or community member, you can share what you know with other families by writing a review or answering a few questions about what the school offers. As a school leader, you can upload photos, describe school programs, and more with an Official school profile.

The completeness meter moves to INTERMEDIATE, then ADVANCED, and finally HONOR ROLL as you complete the following: 10 or more reviews, at least 1 photo, and 9 program questions parents find helpful.
