My son goes to this school unfortunately. For one, Salem itself is a poor community which in turn does not give the children who live there much hope to look foward to a positive productive future. I dont live with my son but I have attended numerous functions with him. Its sad to say im usually the only parent there. The reason the school has a poor record is not because of the teachers, but because there is no involvement of parents in their kids education. My son can be a class clown, and as most children, can be disobedient, but his mother and i place a lot of effort into making sure he does his work. He is an A-C student which proves the students there can learn from the teachers, if the parents were involved. Believe me, im sure there are a good amount of teachers that just sit behind a desk to collect a check and teach nothing, but for the ones that do, they have a real fight on their hands; the enviroment, easy money, drugs, gangs, invisible parents, etc.. I would say because of the community and its parents is why this school's rating is at a low.

The teachers and staff are trying very hard to improve the quality of this school. Student discipline is a huge problem. Parent involvement is next to none. Extracurricular activities are very few. Though I must say that the music teacher does an excellent job with the chorus.
