Teaneck High School continues to be an excellent academic experience for me. I am fortunate to be in highly competitive honors-level and advanced placement coursework, and while highly rigourous, has been extremely fulfilling. Not only have I had the opportunity to grow academically (I plan to ultimately attend medical school in the hopes of becoming a radiation oncologist, specializing in head/neck RO), but have been introduced to so many different people in my grade, from all different backgrounds, religions and cultures. We are all very supportive of each other, and very accepting, and interested in each other's lives in and out of the classroom. I am proud to say that I am a Jew, I keep kosher, and have a kosher lunch through the school whenever I desire hot lunch, I have all the religious support I want through both Israel culture club, Chabad, and the many friends I have made in all circles and all religions. The teachers are unbelievably available all the time, early mornings, after school, sundays, on email all the time and always very available to help. I am so thankful for Teaneck High School.
The education system is engaging and well disciplined
Great selection of courses, children are not locked into a track, parental involvement encouraged, variety of sports, arts, clubs, community service.
My sons class graduated top 3% of the nation in 2008. Kids graduate w/ 4.7 GPA's. All the resources are available for your children to succeed. The staff has BA's, Masters & Doctorates. Diverse community and pro-kids. Both my children are currently in college and doing fantastic it is because of the town, the school system and of course a family that supports.
This is a tremendous high school that offers incredible learning opportunities for students at all levels. The specialized programs for TEAMS (math, science & technology) and TAA (arts program) have really boosted the level of offerings for all students, and the newest concentration in Business Education is growing by leaps and bounds. The staff is highly trained and my children felt safe and nurtured there all four years, going on to good colleges.
I want to give three cheers for Teaneck High School. It is a school which truly allows its students to live Martin Luther King Jr's dream of diversity. Students receive an excellent education in a multicultural setting which forever changes them by opening them up to a greater comfort zone than the majority of people in the country experience. Don't believe, however, what so many parents say about 'Honors' and 'Regular' classes. In our experience, honors classes are really challenging and should only be taken by students who excel and love that area. If you put a kid in there who doesn't love it or isn't good at it, she will fail! That's stressful. In a regular class, learning happens and is interesting too and many of the coolest, most inspiring teachers can be found there.
'I am a current senior who has taken both honors AP and regular classes throughout my high school career and I feel as though you are not in a honors or AP classes you will not get the better education. I have sat in the front of a regular class and not been able to hear my teacher speak and that's unheard of in a honors or AP class.'
I feel kids in regular classes dont get as good an education as thoughs in AP or Honors who dont get that great an education in the first place. It is a well run school although not exactly very safe. But teachers are very helpful although some at the brink of retirement.
If your child takes Honors and AP classes they will get an adequate education and get prepared for college. If they stay in regular classes their education will be sub-par. There are some good teachers. They seem to lose many good teachers to other disticts. There are many extracirricular activities and their music program is quite good. The administration could use an upgrade. I am an involved parent and it is very difficult to get parents to volunteer to help.
