I have to agree with the other about how horrible this school is. I hate taking my kid here. My kid is behind academically and when I confronted the teacher with questions about what I could do at home with my child the teacher didn't know what to tell me and just shrugged their shoulder. I am also hassled every week about some sale they are having (cause the school lacks funds) whether it is a pickle/popcorn sale or book fairs, non-stop photo sales, catalog sales, after school events for dinning out, I mean it never stops. If they would put more focus on education instead of trying to sell something and turn our children into salesmen maybe our kids would be doing better academically. And Ms. Garcia is a very rude individual. If you confront her about any issues she does not listen to your concerns and talks at you like you are a student. I'm sorry, but this school is getting funding from my child right? If I want something addressed shouldn't it be? And the school times are 9-3:45. After homework there isn't much time left and he is exhausted. And forget it being military friendly! They could care less if you are military. Civilian children are allowed here.
I do not want to go into a long detailed list on what is wrong with this school I will just say it was enough to force us to finally make the decision to homeschool. If you are ok with your children primarily just being in daycare all day, a dark dingy depressing environment and staff that could care less about the children especially military children this is the school for you. It is pathetic more pride, money and effort isn't put into this school which is ON the base. That being said however, my daughter is flourishing in homeschool and I regret ever even putting her in SBE.
Sandia Base ES is part of Albuquerque Public Schools which is in the midst of a leadership crisis. The School Board just voted to not extend the Super's contract due to his ignorant actions on the job and in his home environment. The district is a mess and all the schools are floundering because of this and the fact NM pays their teachers poorly and allows their principals to run the schools as if each were the HMS Bounty. Staff are not allowed to ever disagree with district policy and are removed if they dare to try and inject new concepts into a concrete foundation of bad administration. If you have the money, private schooling is really the only way around this problem. There are charter schools in town, but they are run by the same leadership as currently operates the district. In particular, Sandia Base ES is a rather sad and pathetic environment for children and parents to pprogress. Parents and children coming from DOD schoolswill be really shocked by the lack of material support and quality instruction provided to this school. The principal of the school appears to add nothing to an oppressive environment and rules the staff as though they were slaves to be abused.
Coming from a different state (Maryland) I would say the school system here is far behind. I believe they are not challenging our kids enough and if I could I would send my daughter somewhere else. I also dislike the fact that every wednesday children get half a day.
This school has undergone many changes in the 5 years my children have attended, but I have to say by far this has been the worst year. I would not send my children here if I had an option. One parent said it best it is very depressing to walk into the school and see such unhappy people. The school is lifeless, and depressing and the education the children are receiving doesn't seem to be up to par with other elementary schools. Being a military family we have seen how many states deal with their education programs, and this school is not child friendly nor do they want parents opinions! You have been warned to find another school if you are able to because this school is not a warm, kind, elementary school that is focused on your child and their learning needs.
While there is a noticeable change in the way the administration is running, I still feel that the school, as a whole, is very unwelcoming. I see the Principal in the halls and involved with the children more, which is a very welcomed change. As soon as you walk into the school, it seems cold and depressing. The front desk seems to lack enthusiasm for the job they are in charge of. Quiet frankly it's disheartening to see someone who seems so miserable being surrounded by children. We are extremely lucky this year to have two fantastic teachers this year. I hope that this year, and the years to follow bring a dramatic change for the school. I think people really have lost their zeal for their job. I hope that we can see some warmth brought into this school. It's sad to say, that this school alone, makes me wish we could have stayed overseas.
As a resident at KAFB I have heard nothing but negative reviews of this school. I have also witnessed the things others have mentioned just from going to the school with my friend and her children. Everytime we would pick up her child the teacher would have nothing but negative things to say about her child. Nothing was ever positive. Also this is supposed to be a school for military kids but is open for non-military children which leads me to question the security. It would also be a better school if it was military only for the simple fact of fewer children per classroom which would mean more individual time for the children. I wonder what the rating was before when it was military children? Sad to see this garbage is what is offered to our military children whoms parents fight for our freedom and spend X amount of time away from their children already then to come home or have to live with the sorry education this BASE school offers? I guess I will be driving my child out in town to a better rated chool with higher standards and worthy moral.
The morale in this school is HORRIBLE! There is a reason why this school is rated an "F". Teachers seem to only focus on negative behavior. We have had a less than desirable exp and we are just in kinder!!! Will be transferring for the next school yr! Its sad that this is the school we send our children too while serving in the armed forces!
Before School started I had an IEP for my Daughter. The Kindergarden Teacher seemed to not want to deal with my daughter at all. not to mention when I checked in at the front desk it appeared that they had lost a child. I did not feel comfertable with this school at all.
Bullying is a HUGE problem. The teachers from my sons class seem to not notice good behavior, only bad actions. Never have i heard constructive criticisim, only you did bad. Im am SEVERLY unhappy with this school. The academic program is definately not challenging enough for my son. He complains about being bored and constantly having headaches from the class being too unruly. my son will NOT be attending this school again next year.
Moved here 8 months ago and have struggled to get my child's needs met in Kindergarten. Contacted the principle prior to moving here to let him know that my daughter is sensory sensitive. Came in with IEP evaluation, but only had RECOMMENDATIONS to help her for the classroom. HE refused to re-evaluate!!! 8 months into the school year, my child is struggling, and truly hates kinder!! Currently looking into other placements
This school is by far the worst school my children have attended. Needs new leadership and teachers that CARE and that can educate!
Our son's 4th grade teacher, Ms. McBroom, is SO amazingly fabulous! She's so far above the bar...What a tremendous blessing!
I love this school. The teachers are great and the school it self is a wonderful school. Very clean and friendly. I highly recommend it to all parents!
They are very unorganized and when my daughter was starting Kindergarten I met the principal and asked when registration was and when the first day of school was and he told me he did not know but to drive by the bill board sign a few times a week closer to when school might start and look for the dates. The staff hardly ever knows what is going on and when asking the same question to multiple staff members, we got 10 different answers. I don't feel the academic material is very challenging especially when a student excels in something they don't permit challenging them further but instead they keep them at the same level as the rest of the class. Needless to say my daughter has been very bored the past two years and I wouldn't recommend this school.
I will admit that after reading the reviews of this school I was terrified to send my daughter to Kindergarten, but, being an educator myself, I had to keep and open mind. The school has a new principal and is now doing very well. He has a mission of providing a safe, optimal environment for every student. He has inspired parent involvement and rallied the remaining staff while bringing in exceptional teachers. Every school has issues, challenges, and problems, but this one is making strides and is pleading with the parent-body to pitch in. A school is only as good as its community and families. We all need to take responsibility and work toward improvement, providing an example of citizenship. My daughter's kindergarten experience was amazing. Her teacher challenged and nurtured her with professionalism and compassion. We are very pleased and hoping for the best next year.
My daughter started KG after X-mas break at Sandia and I am not impressed. I believe she learned more at her old school which was only half day classes. She has had issues with other students bullying until I went to the teachers and raised cane. Appearently she is not the only child with this problem. Makes me feel real safe sending her to that kind of enviroment. The play ground is full of trash and the duty teacher is to busy chit chatting with other mothers not watching the yard. The parking lot is an accident waiting to happen. They need someone in there to slow ppl down and have them stop for parents and kids trying to get to the school. Makes me wish I was still in LE and could right ppl tickets. I can't wait until we leave this base.
This school is horrible. Since we moved here 1 year and a half ago this school has only gotten worse. My Kindergartener was being sent home with Pre-K level work, and now that he's in 2nd grade it's not any better. Having a school like this will prevent children from reaching their full potential. I have a child in Kinder and she is so bored with her work. I will be taking them out and homeschooling. They learn more ain a month at home with me than they do in a whole year at this school. The office staff are not happy people and the school is not clean. They are going through renovations, but even before these renovations the school was a mess! Don't send your kids here, transfer them to a better school or homeschool them if you are able!
School is usually unclean. The office staff is not very friendly. There was no principle when my son started kindergarten. Lots of mix ups with lunch and money. The lessons were pre-school level and not challenging enough. Very long day for these 5 year olds. We did like his teacher but we finally decided to dis-enroll and begin home-school. Now he's learning twice as much in half the time.
Office personnel were not very friendly. Also, lots of field trips. Fourth grade teacher was wonderful. Very good ethnic mix, good discipline, kids seem to get along well. There is only one 6th grade class at the school and it is definitely better than the public middle school option.
