This school is okay but certainly nothing spectacular. Homework is not given out on a regular basis and is actually far less than we saw at the last school we were at. It takes too long to get test results and homework graded and back to the students. Parents here are pretty involved in activities but the level of education in the classroom still leaves much to be desired.

Anyone who rates this school less than 5 stars needs to move to the west side and be humbled. I used to be a high school teacher and taught in the best private schools prior to moving to New Mexico. I was appalled at the lack of expertise here on the west side and finally put in a formal transfer. Thank goodness!! My son was bored at his old school and was tested gifted/advanced in most areas. He is still adjusting though. However, homework began by the 2nd week of school. On the west side much later. The amount of homework is also more here compared to the west side!! LOVE IT! The clubs offered are awesome, ... west side ... none!! (At least my son's previous school). Faculty and staff on the west side treat parents like idiots because they assume that you are. I have 2 masters, the spouse has a doctorate!! The faculty treats you with respect regardless. A lesson the west side could use in spades!! LOVE THIS SCHOOL!!

I rated this school above average for academics. Compared to our friends who have children in other public schools I feel our child has learned more and is more advanced in his studies. Aside from the academics, we we do not feel the nuturing from the teachers, as I read from another review. However, we've spoken to other parents and they disagree so I think it has to do with the teacher we were assigned to. Also, Kindergarteners have to wait outside in the cold before school. The school was remodeled and supposedly solved the traffic problems with their new drop off zone but has only made it worse. The school doesn't have an actual parking, instead you are to park across the street at a church. Not to mention, the secretary in the office is very rude and not helpful.

Hands down the absolute best elementary school in the city!! I would not buy a home in any other district. Receive a private school education with all the perks of a public school. The neighborhood near the school is a great place to raise children.

I am the parent that submitted the post in August of 2008 and was not pleased with GOK. Since then, the academics have really taken off, and now I'm much more impressed with the program. I have learned that the GOK teachers are absolutely extraordinary and work hard to make sure the kids have a good experience. Turns out the math I was skeptical of is pretty standard for NM, and is what is used in the pricey private schools here as well. Plus it has progressed to a point where it is more challenging and rigorous. And they have split the children into reading groups that challenge each at their individual level. So I have to say that GOK has won me over, and I'm happy to say my daughter is flourishing academically and loves her school! It was just a bit of a slow start. :)
