Great school. Professional, dedicated and caring Teachers and Staff. Wonderful families. Many educational adventures each day. We love Georgia O'Keeffe Elementary.
Gifted, dedicated teachers and staff. Amazing parents. We are very pleased with our school. Amazing Library and Librarian. Cheerful, always helpful staff. It is a bright and sunny learning environment.
This school is located in a upper middle class neighborhood and there is a great deal of ostentatious and snobbish behavior exhibited by the parents and staff. My daughter was ostracized by other mothers because she is very young and she dyed her hair a couple of different colors to please her own young daughter. Nobody spoke to her at birthday parties and many people didn't even bother to RSVP to her daughter's invitations. Such rude people don't make good parents or educators. My granddaughter has also been bullied for two years by another student and that issue has been handled quite poorly. I will give a thumbs up to the academic expectations at the school, but there are no programs in art or music for creative and talented children.
GOK is an amazing school. It's been 3 wonderful years my children have been attending Georgia O'Keeffe. Great teachers, Great office staff, great nurse and so much more. Only complaint i have is the current principle isn't so friendly of welcoming. The principle before her was so friendly and always greeting students and parents. My children enjoy their day at school and are always sharing what they learned.
This is an outstanding public school in a city that does not have a reputation for quality education. The teachers do their best and granted some try a lot harder than others, but that happens everywhere in every school in the entire country. The leadership has changed and now everyone is held accountable and the test scores prove our children are learning. Am I 100% happy, no, so I stay active in making sure my voice is heard. As long as all the parents start to do that we will keep this as one of the best schools in the city. The more parents help, the better the school is. My children love going to school as should they all
GOK is an outstanding school with an exceptional staff which benefits greatly from the dedication of the parent community to education and the staff's desire to foster growth. Our two children have very different needs that have been respected with the early years being focused on a sense of family & community and the latter years preparing for middle school & independence. We moved into the school district for GOK and I haven't had one regret. The school has had leadership changes in the last two years improving the school even more.
I went to meet the teacher day and loved the teacher my student got. The classroom is right by the office and i noticed that the principal was in her office. Dont you think that she should be out greeting parents and studnets. My child has no idea who the principal is. I really hope that the assistant principal does not follow in the principals footsteps. Last year i volunteered alot and never saw the principal visiting the students or even saying hi to them in the hallway. Really not to impressed with her.
This school is the best!! I have worked at this school for more than half of my teaching years. It is a fantastic place to work. The staff members are professional and are the hardest working group of teachers I have ever worked with. The parents are supportive and help in any way that they can. They are the reason our students are so great. I love teaching at this school and never want to change to another place. Thank you all for making it such a wonderful place to be.
I have the same feeling that the girl at the reception was not friendly. Otherwise it's a great school.
I called to set up a tour and the secretary was so rude and short. Said we don't do tours I said you expect me to send my child to a school without seeing it???? I said may I please talk to the principle to gather more information. She was equally rude but started to warm up after I broke the ice. She said good luck because transfers are lottery and I already have 41 requests.. What is with these old women that are so jaded and grumpy. You expect children to have manners where are yours.
This school is amazing! My kindergartener and second grader love it. Their teachers are wonderful and the focus on academics/curriculum are outstanding.
NO homework, no art classes, the secretary is very, very , very rude. That turned me off right away. She has been there forever, why? I am not impressed. The first day was play, waste of time.
This school is okay but certainly nothing spectacular. Homework is not given out on a regular basis and is actually far less than we saw at the last school we were at. It takes too long to get test results and homework graded and back to the students. Parents here are pretty involved in activities but the level of education in the classroom still leaves much to be desired.
Anyone who rates this school less than 5 stars needs to move to the west side and be humbled. I used to be a high school teacher and taught in the best private schools prior to moving to New Mexico. I was appalled at the lack of expertise here on the west side and finally put in a formal transfer. Thank goodness!! My son was bored at his old school and was tested gifted/advanced in most areas. He is still adjusting though. However, homework began by the 2nd week of school. On the west side much later. The amount of homework is also more here compared to the west side!! LOVE IT! The clubs offered are awesome, ... west side ... none!! (At least my son's previous school). Faculty and staff on the west side treat parents like idiots because they assume that you are. I have 2 masters, the spouse has a doctorate!! The faculty treats you with respect regardless. A lesson the west side could use in spades!! LOVE THIS SCHOOL!!
I rated this school above average for academics. Compared to our friends who have children in other public schools I feel our child has learned more and is more advanced in his studies. Aside from the academics, we we do not feel the nuturing from the teachers, as I read from another review. However, we've spoken to other parents and they disagree so I think it has to do with the teacher we were assigned to. Also, Kindergarteners have to wait outside in the cold before school. The school was remodeled and supposedly solved the traffic problems with their new drop off zone but has only made it worse. The school doesn't have an actual parking, instead you are to park across the street at a church. Not to mention, the secretary in the office is very rude and not helpful.
They have great teachers, librarian and other personnel. I love volunteering there because of the great camaraderie.
I am the parent that submitted the post in August of 2008 and was not pleased with GOK. Since then, the academics have really taken off, and now I'm much more impressed with the program. I have learned that the GOK teachers are absolutely extraordinary and work hard to make sure the kids have a good experience. Turns out the math I was skeptical of is pretty standard for NM, and is what is used in the pricey private schools here as well. Plus it has progressed to a point where it is more challenging and rigorous. And they have split the children into reading groups that challenge each at their individual level. So I have to say that GOK has won me over, and I'm happy to say my daughter is flourishing academically and loves her school! It was just a bit of a slow start. :)
I was new this year to Georgia O'Keeffe and the staff and parents welcomed me with open arms. It is a great work environment. I look forward to many more wonderful years at this school.
Great School Parents are very involved and the teachers are wonderful. By far the best elementary school in the Albuquerque area. After school activities are available in art sports chess etc.
