When I attended Grant in the early 2000s, it was among the best middle schools in the city. After subbing there, I couldn't believe how incompetent the administration was. The disciplinary system is a joke. At other schools, if students disrespect a sub, they can get up to 2-3 days In School Suspension. At Grant, they get a few lunch detentions unless the teacher writes them a referral (even then, consequences are minimal). I had a student almost attack me and I had him escorted to the front office. They returned him to the classroom the same period! And he still kept misbehaving!
After writing several referrals for the same student,I was told by the principal to not sub there for the rest of the quarter. I told him I'm not subbing there again (as long as he is principal), which is awful because the school does have really great teachers who have to put up with this nonsense and treated me as part of the community whereas the administration treats subs like intruders. Because of this system, students know the consequences for their behavior are minimal and misbehave all they want. And many students are actually rewarded despite how bad their behavior was.
The post 2009 reviews are spot on. Under Roney, who has been principal since 2009, the school has been in a decline. The past 2 years, the school has received an F grade, enrollment has dropped, the teacher turnover grew worse (the last time I subbed there, the school lost 20 teachers), and a constant shortage of subs willing to work at the school (for a school in NE Albuquerque where sub shortages are rare, that is pretty pathetic). Ed Briggs, the old principal, ran a tight ship and was very welcoming and supportive of subs and was great on discipline. Then Roney drove the ship into an ice berg. Keep on chasing away subs, Roney, and we'll keep on spreading the word of your abysmal performance as principal.
This school is terrible. The whole school is filthy and the entire student base in incredibly rude. They should start by getting rid of the hundreds of roaches. The discipline system is useless. The overall teaching is good but so little of the students actually care about learning anyways.
Nightmare school please if you can send you student to another school. The experience my son had at this school will hunt him for years to come. Two teachers bullied him another physically assaulted him because he had his jacket/hood on in the building. The principal has no control of his school. One teach called a young man the "N" during class. Anything horrible that could happen in one year did. Please parents don't sent your children here.
this school is awesome and has really cool programs and the principal mr.rodney seems to be verry nice and verry funny! i recomend this school because alot of my friends love!! ms.benavidez is the best teacher u can meet and ms.burwinkle is a awesome teacher too!! Go Eagles!!
I work there and we had it is outstanding as far as serving APS and the community as it is a community center. Principal Ed Briggs (retired this year) was SUPERB and integrating staff, students, and community!!! We also incorporate service learning as well.
What i have to say cannot be said in 150 words or less. So quick and to the point, find another school. Most of the teachers do not try. The principal and the counslors do not care. Their before and after school classes are a joke. There are (like most public schools) too many students in the classes. Unless i quit my job and sat in class with my child, my child will not learn.
With all of the great reviews here one would think they'd have an excellent school. My child cannot receive the special education supports he needs. They may have caring teachers, but they are overwhelmed. The split schedule is a great idea, implemented incorrectly! Not enough teachers. Great after school programs, though.
