INTERMEDIATE

Want to improve this school’s profile? You can!

All schools on GreatSchools begin with BASIC completeness, which includes important information like contact details and test scores. It’s up to the school community to take the next steps. As a parent or community member, you can share what you know with other families by writing a review or answering a few questions about what the school offers. As a school leader, you can upload photos, describe school programs, and more with an Official school profile.

The completeness meter moves to INTERMEDIATE, then ADVANCED, and finally HONOR ROLL as you complete the following: 10 or more reviews, at least 1 photo, and 9 program questions parents find helpful.

I heard that this school had sponsored teachers meaning they are now legal resident of this country from being a foreign national. And I heard from a realable source from the Human Resources that they are no more sponsoring. That will be the biggest mistake that this district could make because I have 2 kids and 5 nephews and nieces who all go to this high school and they all said they were all great teachers. So what if they left? I'm sure there are more teachers who needs a sponsor who are good or better than the old ones. Please continue this sponsorship because it does help the high school and the community.

EVHS is good school. It does have some really good teachers and some that are not so good. I believe that because of required state testing some teachers cater to students that are really not interested in learning. This can create problems for students that excel and need to be challenged. I also feel that the dress code as written in the handbook should be enforced. That does not mean uniforms but just enforcing what is already in the handbook. Overall the school is good and I feel they are trying to get better.

I transferred to this school for my Sophomore Year from neighboring Los Alamos High and this is the best choice I could've done in my life so far. this school is like a family, students and staff have personal bonds and can discuss issues with them. Student Council is amazing at this school! The Student Council will be hosting the annual New Mexico Association of Student Councils State Conference in two years at the school. They will be showcasing the wonderful traits of this school that are often overlooked for the negativity. I am so fortunate and happy to have moved to this school!

Espanola is a great school, with great teachers that want the best for their students. Although, I don't agree with the superintendent choice of choosing Theresa Flores as Principal. It is hard to believe this school has seen 2 principals in 2 years. This would have never happened if they kept Bruce Hopmeier!

As a former student now enrolled in the California State University system, I can look back at my time at good ol' Espanola Valley and say it was a great high school that gave me every bit of knowledge for the real world. A great experience that I won't forget. This school has some amazing teachers that dedicate their lives to their students. Mr & Mrs. McGinn, Ms. Roney and Mrs. Wood are some of the most experienced teachers that love to work with their students. The counseling staff is wonderful, and the former principal Bruce Hopmeier was one of the most inspirational people I have ever met. This community may have a "reputation" but this school, has a reputation for success with students that leave it. Go Espanola!

There is a new principal at EVHS, he may not be the same as the principal they fired for political reasons but I still believe the curriculum and academics are setting a higher stage at Espanola. When we moved to Espanola 3 years ago I never knew we would actually be sending our children here. I have been really impressed and others should take advantage of this really great high school instead of sending their children to neighboring schools.

It is sad to see Espanola's principal to be let go, just like that. He is someone who has changed this school for the better. They will regret this decision. As a parent of a former student this school is excellent and I hope it continues to stay that way with the new leadership next school year.

Today 4/8/2010 I read an article in the Rio Grand SunTitled Veteran High School Principal Unhappy with lack of Explanation...' Mr. Hopmeier was recently informed by a first year SUperintendent That she has decided not to renew his contract. Well, here we go again. After seven years of clean-up and great morale for both students and Teachers this Superintendent states she wants to take the school in a different direction....What the ---- is she thinking? The school is going in the right direction. The paper stated Hopmeier's school met the State Standards only once..... It had never ever done that before. Improvement takes time and continuity. I feel so sorry for the teachers, the student and the parents that are going to get caught up in Ms. Archuleta's political agenda. She hired her sister-in-law. Need I say more? She is playing games with real people's lives. I say fire her.

I'm a proud parent of a Sundevil. Sending my son to Espanola was a good choice. One thing I liked the most about Espanola was if your child was a senior or a junior and took classes half day, The school would pay for afternoon college classes at Northern New Mexico College while attending EVHS. Not only did EVHS offer a great education for my son, they got him off to an early start in college and the conseling staff was amazing. I definitely recommend Espanola!

Espanola Valley High School offers a nice and friendly environment, interesting and inspiring teachers, and fun students with different interests. I was not involved with sports but got into yearbook, the awesome student council, and other extra curriculars, and I'd have to strongly disagree that sports take center stage at Espanola. They are a part of student life, as they are at any school, but the athletic program is not overbearing and students are not as preoccupied with jocks and cheerleaders as they are at any other school I've ever seen. At Espanola, I had some of the most interesting, inspiring teachers who taught students to be free-thinking individuals. And as a student who now attends a University on the east coast, I can attest to the fact that these qualities are not found in a lot of high schools in our country.

At first I sent my two children to neighboring Pojoaque, I swithched them to Espanola last year and wow, I made the best choice so far. At Espanola the number of clubs is fantastic and unlike anyother I have seen. Both my children are involved in the M.E.S.A program which stands for Mathematics, Engineering, Science Achievement. Espanola is one of the top state placers for the M.E.S.A program as well as for the SADD, Students against drunk driving which keeps EVHS students involved in the community to end the DWI statistic that Rio Arriba county has. I'm glad to see that the teahers are so outstanding at Espanola, they keep in touch with me and always make learning a blast. I recommend Espanola for many reasons, At first the schools test scores had made me a bit worried but that certainly does not prove much about such a great school.

I love the selection of AP classes at Espanola, It is one of the few Northern New Mexico High Schools with such a wide variety. I'm a proud parent of a Sundevil. Espanola is a great school.

Outstanding! That is how I can discribe my time at Espanola! The teachers at Espanola are great! They are close with the students, they form a bond with the students to help them in anything, and are always there when we needed them. For that i'm thankful because my first year in college was fantastic they got me prepared!

Our School may not have 'The best test scores' but that dosesnt prove a thing. I mean honestly, think about it?, This school has really bright students, students that soar for the platinum scholarships. I admire this school, It is a great learning enviroment. Regardless of what people say about Espanola, It doesnt matter becuase we prove all wrong.

Espanola is the perfect place to learn and thrive for any student planning on attending a higher education institution. The clubs and some sports are top notch and teachers make themselves easily available. The school recently added many new AP classes so the course selection is rigorous for those who choose to pursue that challenge. The principal is absolutely amazing and the staff is wonderful. I would recommend evhs to anyone who plans on being challenged and for someone who simply wants to learn in a great and now such a safe environment.

As a parent and former graduate of EVHS i belive it is a great school, the block system at the school is also very impressive it is another reason why i send my children to Espanola. I have 2 kids enrolled in EVHS and i belive this school is preparing them for the life long challenges they will face in the future, the teachers are great, sometimes the administration of the school lacks in some areas, but i must say the athletics are fantastic especially in basketball.

As a concerned parent I'm proud to send my kids to Espanola Valley for certain reasons, the counseling staff is really great. The Juniors counselor Mrs. Atencio is wonderful in everything she does, she sits with the students and meets with them regularly, i also belive the principal has changed this school and made it become more safe.

I have two children who graduated from Espanola Valley High School and I was impressed with the caliber of the teachers who inspired my children with their enthusiasm for their subject matter, whether it was Physics, Television Productions, Spanish, English, or Calculus. Teachers sought opportunities for the students to excel and go beyond. My children entered college very well-prepared and actually found freshman year easier than senior year at evhs!

As a alumnus of this great hometown high school i must say things have changed alot, the schools apperence has went way down hill, evhs didn't even used to look like a school, more like a college campus. Today the outside of the school makes it look like a poor school, and i know they can do better to also improve the main building. School spirit looks like it has also come to a fall however, i think its great when students and other alumnus post reviews of this school and show how much love they have for it. The teachers have always been wonderful at this school it is one of the many reasons i decided to send my children to this school. Go Sundevils!!

I attend Espa ola High after coming from the White Rock area. It's amazing. The teachers are what make the school what it is. Each teacher I had was so compassionate about their subject and their enthusiasm makes you want to learn and actually be interested in academics. I'd recommend this school to anyone who is interested in having a great college prep education.

As i read the reviews of this great school i'm proud to see the support of the community and alumni, as former student myself i can say that EVHS is outstanding in everyway, the building and funding of the school is poor but other than that this school has really challenged me and i have showed my family and everyone else that doubts this school that great talented achievers come from espanola valley high! I will deffinately send my children to this school in the future. Forever we unite in the valley, once a Sundevil.. always a Sundevil!

This school is by far the best school in Northern New Mexico, this is also because of the schools visionary principal and his great efforts to improve evhs. This scool has had some major improvements and that is something the community is proud to see despite the horrible newspapers comments of the high school, i loved all the clubs and my favorite of course the national honor society. I the counseling staff at evhs helped me threw out the whole way which really encouraged me, I'm also glad to see lots of great achievers come from this school i must say the high quality teachers here have totally prepared me for college.

As a graduate from Espanola Valley, i can say i'm honestly proud to have graduated from such a great school, everyone always stereotyped this school, which i never understood becuase the students and the teachers were absolutely awesome, there wasnt a bad 'drug problem' or 'gangs' like everyone tends to say and the student body was great and very spirited one thing i also loved about the school so much, and the athletics were fantastic! I always loved all my teachers! The best of my memories were at EVHS and i will always remember this great school in my second year at Georgetown i could say this school really prepared me for the upcomming challenges of the future.

I just recently graduated from Espanola along with the rest of the Class of 2007. There is no other school I would have wanted to graduated from. The teachers at Espanola are exceptional. Their primary goal is for each of their students to succeed. They give us lectures and truly push us. Letting us know we can do anything we set our minds to. The love I have for Espanola Valley High School will remain with me forever, I'll be sure to send my children there. Its up to the student to achieve their goals and succeed in their education as well as life. The staff at Espanola teach us, as well as, support us in everything we do.

I am a former student of Espanola Valley High School on my fourth year of college. I really feel this high school prepared me in furthering my education. There are some downfalls with the school but it was more due to the lack of support from some members in the community. In every school, you will find students who are eager to learn and others who aren't. It is the responsibility of the parents and community to encourage these students to reach for more. One thing that kept me involved were the sports and extracurricular activities. In addition, I was fortunate to have a very supportive family and encouraging teachers. It should be the goal of the school to make available more activities and encourage more support from the community.

Just read the poor spelling and writing from the 'former students' who have posted here. It tells a story about this school. Yes, they have some good teachers, but those who are good don't stick around long. There are a lot who have been there for many years, and they have become very comfortable with just passing students from grade to grade. This school is doomed to always be barely scraping by...because that is all that is expected for anyone in the community. Pull your heads out of the sand Espanola, your schools have problems, and your kids are the number one on the list of problems! - A former Espanola Valley High teacher

I am a recent graduate of EVHS and personally I feel that it is a very good school this was not the only school that I attended and to be honest I felt the quality of education as well as the disciplinary acts were much better then in my previous school. EVHS has very high quality tecahers who really get involved with the students. In my opinion and experience the teachers at EVHS made me feel much more comfortable in the learning environment, and they made it feel like learning was fun they made it exciting. For those that have the idea that EVHS is a bad school or think that it doesnt compare to the rest I have to stringly disagree sure we have problems but look around every school does no one is perfect.

I am going to be a senior at EVHS. I think this is an awesome school. The teachers are great and we have alot to do here. We are encouraged to learn as much and be as much as we can. We also have more electives to choose from. Sure there are some problems but what school has no problem. I would send my kids here when I have children.

I am a student at EVHS and I think it's a pretty good school. Although they do need to loosen up the dicipline in some areas, and make the dicipline more intense in others. Most of the teachers are understanding and try to have their students learn as much as possible. And there IS NOT just mostly sports here. Theres many other extracirricular things here such as teacher/student made organizations (or 'clubs' if you will) as well as MESA, The Gate Program (Gifted Program), Student Council, and a bunch of committees and such. All in all this school is pretty good.

I would not recommend this school to anyone would like their children to go on to any other education after highschool. The students need to be more prepared for the outside world wheither it be college or finding a job. Extracurricular activites at this school are pretty much non existant especially for a student interested in the arts. --A former student

Espanola can be a good school if they would try. My daughter says that the are always are in the cafe cause of no teacher and she said her teachers are coplian cause they have no supplies. Ihen also I think they have very weak dislipline at the schools they need better inprovements. They need more academic programs be sides sports that all this school is about. They need more parent invovlment also and more things to keep intrest in students so they won't drop out. They just want to have a good time there sense they are there everyday.

At espanola vallley high school there are many teachers that are just fantastic. What we need to improve is the students attendance, there are just to many kids not coming to school or they simply dropped out. Mr. rendon the principal tries very hard to improve the school, he is doing a great job. The afjrotc is a great program, they do alot of community service, and that looks good for the school even though all of espanola has a very bad reputation but we tried.
