Delaware Community School

I am a grandparent to a child that is extremely ADHD. Before enrolling my grandson into Delaware community his elementary school allowed him to 'call the shots.' He wasn't a bad student - he was just given so much freedom to walk out of class or do whatever he wanted... and his grades suffered. He hated reading; he wouldn't even read comic books. Delaware community school has given him the stability that he has needed to succeed. The rules don't vary for the students - and as a grandparent of a child that needs a firm schedule, guidance, support... I really appreciate Delaware community school. My grandson has learned that he can be equal to all of his classmates. And most impressive of all - my son is reading. Not JUST reading, but enjoying to read... I never thought he would even attempt to read. He reads on his own and I love it. Hats off to the staff for everything they do to provide the stable, caring, supportive and firm enviornment to these children. I can't say enough good things - honestly. You just can't go wrong with this school. my grandson works hard,and stays focused... enough said!Summer vacation is almost over and he's asking how soon before school?

This little neighborhood school is very full. The Dual Language program draws city wide (English / Spanish). Great long standing garden club, multi gradereading buddies, peer safety patrol, new positive behavior initiative highlighting Be safe, Be respectful and Be responsible instead of don't do this and don't do that! Very diverse population and high free/reduced lunch, but not uncommon for urban school. Many after school enrichment programs, tutoring and some of the best teachers in the area!

We've been very impressed with the school's english/spanish bi-lingual education program (called the Dual Language (DL) Program). 1/2 the class are native Spanish speakers and half are native English speakers. 3 days are all in Spanish and 2 days are all in English. The principle is very proud of this program, as are the DL teachers. Because it is a competative program, the parents whose kids are in the DL program are very invested in their children's education. The only problem in my view is that there are so few spots and such high demand. It also seems that the Albany County school district is continually threatening to end this program which would be one of the saddest developments in our school district.

This school is wonderful for children and families that want/need a bilingual experience.

There is an immersion English/Spanish program housed here that enriches the entire school community. New building and playground are very nice, but it's getting a little crowded with the addition of PreK classes that were not planned for.
