This school is absolutely fantastic if you hate doing work, but would still like to graduate with a regents degree. The key to your success is to simply not attend class and do as little work as possible during your freshman year. Provided your record looks bad enough, you'll be asked to join the FOCUS program, which you should accept. From here on throughout the rest of your high school career, you'll be getting regents credit for doing core level work. For example, this was one of my FOCUS friends' final English projects for senior year. The assignment was to write a children's picture book about whatever topic you wanted. She re-handed in her junior year final English project which was neither for children, nor a picture book. She got full credit plus extra for creativity. In addition to this, you also get many other unique privileges. Despite field trip funding being cut for the rest of the school, FOCUS students enjoy many "team building" (picnics, etc.) field trips throughout the year. You also have access to an exclusive lounge, which you can visit during class, any time you want. Just don't fail every class or get caught doing drugs, or you're out! (For a few months)
This school was horrible. Most of the teachers who taught AP classes did not prepare students well for the AP tests. Too many students did drugs. Also, taking core classes was an excuse for being lazy. Core students have plenty of time to study, but they don't. Honors/AP students were arrogant, and so were their parents. The Music department's only focus was to fundraise, because they keep getting cut for doing a poor job. Maybe if they did their job better they wouldn't get cut.
I personally loved my time at Guilderland High School. I was in the Focus program that the other comments are talking about and it helped me ALOT. There was NO special treatment for any of us. We got HELPED. The lounge that the one comment is complaining about was nothing special at all. While I was in this lounge I got help from upperclassmen in the program, and learned more about what its like to be out in the real world. We did community service and helped other people. Arrogant people shouldn't be able to post on this site. I have graduated from this school BECAUSE of the Focus program. I recommend placing your child into GHS and I also recommend if they are having academic, attitude, or attendance problems that you consider the Focus program and learn about. Instead of listening to rumors or your child complaining about it. Please don't overlook this school and take it into great consideration. The teachers are amazing as well as all staff. Including the bus drivers, hall monitors, teacher assistants and other behind the scenes staff.
So are you saying core students are not smart? If so, it shows how arrogant you are. The school is a nice school. The core students do not get their own lounge. It's a small 'community' of students who need more academic attention you are talking about. They are put in this community, called focus when they have academic problems or home life problems that affect their school work, they get the same teachers the ap students do. it's a good idea, and most students in focus tend to get better grades after being in it, and not because they half ass it, they still do work, they same as the other non focus students, yes they have a lounge, big deal. It's not amazing. the music students can eat in their music lounge too, but you aren't complaining about that. The school is good and teachers are as well.
Set aside from most of the reviews here, I did not enjoy my freshman year in this school. Many of my teachers did not help me with homework, or teach very well. The people there are all the same, very few are unique. But this is just one year of experience here, if I had stayed maybe it would have gotten better.
This is a great school! I am currently going to 11th grade and one of the best students in the school. The AP classes prepare the students well for the AP tests, most students get a 5 (average score) and a 4 is seen as 'You didn't study!' The extracurricular activities in this school has a lot of variety. The teachers are also well-trained and know how to teach. Also kids in this school do really well on the SAT.
Amazing academic programs, honors and AP availible. Large music program, 3 bands, 2 orchestras and chamber ensembles. Clubs for every persons intrests and every sport you could imagine (soccer, hockey, field hockey, tennis, volleyball, golf, gymnastics, lacrosse, track, XC, basketball, football, cheerleading etc.) Active PSTA and many parents are involved in booster clubs for sports.
