The school is run top-down. Principal is not parent friendly. Without the Academy for the Gifted, the school would be middle of the road.
I must say that after 8 years in that building it became my home, the staff and the students became my big dysfuctional family. The school offers limitless possibilities for students but its is up to the student to decide how many of those opportunities he/she takes advantage of
This is my child's third year in 122. The 'academy' challenges it's students, but at times there can be too much pressure considering the ages of these children. This school is extremely 'project' oriented. This means a lot of extra work for parents with relatively no guidelines supplied by teachers. I agree with the parent who mentions that the principal is not really open to parent's comments. She is quite standoffish when receiving comments and/or suggestions. If your child is under-challenged in his/her school then this is a good place to be. If he/she is not mature for her age, I would not recommend this program as they really push the kids. Note: some teachers are more like drill sergeants.
Yes, the school is great - academically. However, it lacks a true sense of community. It is my belief that community starts at the top. That said, the principal at the school is not open to true parental involvement. Learning Leaders is a great program which the parent coordinator has tried to implement. The parents, for the most part, do truly want to be involved but are stopped at the door, figuratively speaking. Yes, the school is great but it could be greater if the parents were allowed to contribute as much as they had.
P.S.122 would be a very avrerage NYC public school if it were not for the Academy program from grades K to 8. In 2005 school year the Middle school Academy has been expanded to 3 classes for each grade level from grade 6 to 8. In the middle school academy, there's a difference in the level of instruction in that it is geared more toward quality teaching rather than spiral teching methods in regular public school curriculum. Also, along with writing skills, critical thinking skills are emphasized and encouraged in English from the material read and discussed. Students also work in groups on various projects assigned. The Program is very competitive since almost all students are high achievers. In the Champions Club afterschool program, students participate in sports and arts, as well as shows and plays. This year's play will be West Side Story.
I attended this school from 1998-2001 while enrolled in their Gifted Program. The education I received prepared me well for honors-level high school work. There are not great opportunities in music, art or sports, but the core classes (Social Studies, English and Math) were of the highest quality.
I am very happy with this school. I think the teachers are very helpful with their students.
My child currently attends 2nd Grade at P.S. 122 Mamie Fay School. We decided to transfer from a catholic school, which I may add, is one of the schools that are now closing. I have found that this school has made my child want to excel in academics. The teachers so constant interaction with the children is definately a breath of fresh air. I have found her to actually jump out of bed in the morning just to get to school. Music, arts are definately a factor at this school. They do the utmost to keep our children going. Performing in dance, and constantly different art projects. I have found that I did not make a mistake in transfering her, and will not move out of the area just so she can attend this school.
