My children graduated from Albertus Magnus High School. AMHS is relatively small, with about 500 students and is the only Catholic high school in Rockland County. My children were in honors and AP classes that challenged them academically. As with any school, there are some good teachers, and a few great ones too. The performing arts department has become quite popular throughout the years. Also, there are many competitive sports teams. (If you want your son or daughter to play soccer, basketball, baseball, or softball, etc., you may consider having your child to join a travel team while in grade school. Unfortunately that seems to impress the coaches more than the tryouts. This seems to be a typical parents' complaint about high school sports programs in general but we hoped Albertus would be more discerning rather than decide teams based on travel experience - not all travel programs and players are that good to warrant Varsity status for incoming freshmen.) They have a new women's golf program and are beginning a women's swim team this year too. Most importantly, my children have gone on to good universities and have done well. AMHS gave them a good foundation.
The ability for children to be very well-rounded is the most positive aspect of the school. Children are encouraged and allowed to participate in any sports & clubs that they choose. The administration of the school is horrible. The facilities from the library to the locker rooms to the computer lab to the sports fields are sub-par. There are some great teachers, but most are marginal. My child goes to the school & is an excellent student, mainly because we have has to spend lots of additional $$ on tutoring.
Our children went to Albertus Magnus. While there are great public schools in this area. Academically they have done really well, and I love the fact that what I teach at home continues at school.
I attended Albertus all four years of high school and graduated in 1990. I am truly thankful that I had the opportunity to spend my high school years at Albertus. It is a very good school in terms of academics and discipline. I would also give it a good rating socially. The students are respectful and many go on to good colleges and universities. Also, in this day and age of political correctness, it is great to have a school where it is accepted for you to express your faith. I would certainly recommend Albertus to any parent looking to send their child to a school with a positive environment.
