NYSSB is a great place for students who are blind and multiply disabled to learn the core curriculum and daily living skills, feel like part of a group, make friends and improve their overall ability to be independent. Disabled students are able to participate in student government, yearbook, Girl & Boy Scouts, Homecoming, Prom, bowling leagues, softball, soccer, etc. It is a caring environment that puts the students and their needs first. We have an integrated 5-Day Residential Program and 24hour nursing.
My daughter attended NYSSB for 10 years. Everything and everyone was focused on her needs. It was very hard to have her attend the school all week and only come home on weekends but she didn't seem to mind at all. She loved the programs and even more, she loved the staff. Day and night the staff all worked together to ensure her success in learning daily living skills and to make sure she had fun learning. Progress was very slow but steady. We were always included in the planning of her IEP's and were always welcome at the school. When she first went to NYSSB she could not walk. After alot of hard work by a special teacher and the staff, she now walks independently. It is truly a special place.
As a parent of a New York State School for the Blind child, I am extremely impressed by the staff's knowledge and education they receive. The staff ensures that all children receive their highest level of education possible. They also take the kids on outings such as movies, dinners, swimming, etc. to name a few. I have seen my child grow over the past nine years due to the staff's ability to make every child become part of the 'family' and the daily living skills they learn. I frequently stop in to visit and I am always received in a friendly and professional manner. As a parent on the PTSA, we provide input on the student's activities and what the children need. I can't say enough about the available programs and the staff's dedication to the children. Thank you New York State School for the Blind! A must see!!!
NYSSB is the only school I know of where students who are otherwise ignored and warehoused in special ed. classes are encouraged and equipped to meet the world head on when they leave! Thank you to every dedicated staff person who empowers students to discover and build on their abilities!
The New York State school for the Blind can only be described as a 'gem' in the NYS Education field, serving children who are blind, visually impaired with additional disabilities. It can easily boast outstanding educators, assistants and support staff who see the 'whole' child. Any parent, teacher, staff member, who is associated with the school can be proud of the work ethic, and emphasis on educational growth and progress.
