I live in the area and work with some of the children whom attend P.S. 62. With my experience I feel like this school can use a little work.
With the exception of 1 teacher they have there whom which they are aware is a problem each year with harassing, insulting & bullying students... the school works very well over all.
This school is the worst when it comes to comunicating with the parents, and is also the worst when I call the office and ask to please transfer my call to a teacher or someone else in the school the people in the office are really rude is you are asking them for money or something I hate this school and child is not attending in this school next year.
I worked at PS.62 for 4yrs as a Family Associate for the PreK program and my son also attended PS 62 and had the best teachers while he was attending this school.
My daughter currently attends PS 62 and I am well pleased with the academic and classroom enviornment. The teachers are well equipped with the knowledge and compassion in teaching the children. My daughter has been here for two years now and I absolutley love the teachers for there hard work and committment to the children. I would like to see more extra curricula activities, music, chess, yoga, more dance classes, but over all the academic enviornment is excellent and my child has learned a great deal. The security could do a little more rearing especially in the morning. For general ed student this school is good , if the child is special needs and has an IEP there is not much available for speech and certain classifications such as 12:1 but overall the academic and learning enviornment is great. The safety of the school in general is descent
I think the school is improving despite others think. I also think that they should have PTA meetings for those parents who cannot make it in the morning.I just think that they need more challenge for those students who are advanced and to control more of the behavior in the schools.
As a parent I am very happy with PS 62. I moved away and my son who is now in the third grade started crying when I told him he had to go to a new school. I spoke to Ms. Estrella and she allowed my Kindergarten son to attend the school so that I could bring them both in the morning. She was very helpful to me. No wonder my son did not want to leave. He calls PS 62 the best school in the Bronx.
PS 62 is a good school and it is getting better and better every year. The teachers and administrators are caring and they work hard to teach our children. Most of the teachers give their cell phone numbers to the parents so that if they have any questions they can call them, even after school is over. Ms. Estrella cares about the children. She is always there and she takes the time to listen to them. The children walk up to her and give her a hug. She always says thank you for putting a smile on her face. I would recommend this school to any parent who wants their child to be in a caring school.
I attended PS 62 many years ago and I remember the staff to have been very helpful. I have had many family members who attended the school, and I must say some staff members are unprofessional. Some teachers don't have the patience to handle their class. I have seen teachers yelling directly in the children's faces. The prior guard was rude to parents and on occasions I witness her yelling at the children. What upsets me is that those staff members can spoil the reputation of the school. Ms. Estrella takes pride in her role as the school principal. Estrella shows eagerness to help her children succeed. This is wonderful! Some staff members are not helpful and need to be put on call or removed. I think the school has to improve with giving out memos. Memos are not always given on with reasonable timing.
What I would not recommend would be some of the staff. For example security. I am sure they can try getting a more child friendly or child caring individual. They can try advising some of staff (not teachers ) to be a bit more formal and professional when dealing with parents. We have had security guards yell at the children as if they were adults and others that claim not to care because they are not their own. There is a power struggle when speaking to parents. When referring to parents (not the teachers) some staff can be a little unprofessional and disrespectful. They speak as if you are not there. That is why my situations I address them to the principal who as till now seems to want to better things there and seems to be ok listening at the very least. That is greater than someone turning their backs when you speak. Until now I have no complaints of the school teachers and Mrs. Estrella. Respect with respect.
As a parent I have seen that unlike in most schools the Principal here at Public School 62, is very much involved from the time the children walk in the school to the time they are sent home. I have also seen how yes she is very parent friendly and is willing to listen to us. My child and other family members attend this school and yes I would recomend the school to other parents. No I dont get paid to say nice things.
