This school is great, it has provided my children thus far with academics and activities that they enjoy. They have been there since kindergarden, my son will be going into 5th grade and my daughter onto 7th grade. In every school there is going to be issues, especially when it is so overcrowded like this one. However, if I have to compare it with other schools, this is definitely my choice! My kids love it as well!

This school was awesome when Margaret was the security guard..she knew all the kids by name and exactly how to deal with them. I've had great experiences with my children but to be honest, since a lot of the teachers and staff live in the neighborhood, there is a lot of favoritism. IF THEY KNOW YOUR CHILD, most likely they'll get on the basketball team...talent almost always had nothing to do with it...They're better off not having try outs, and doing a raffle..When Mr.Cooper was principal, there were a lot more issues..Mrs.Calzolaio is a way better principal..Margie the nurse is great! The school is very overcrowded.it holds twice the amount of students it was meant for and so there isn't enough supervision at lunch time, when there are most of the fights.

My school is one of the best public schools in the Bronx. Most of the teachers are very caring and try their best to have their students do their best. Hopefully this year all the teachers will be evaluated on their teaching skills so every student gets the best education they can have.

PS 71 is a great school. The school should have more sports for the kids such as soccer. Also the school should have t-shirts with the name of school for school trips just in case a child gets lost. The t-shirt will determine which school the child belongs to. Love the fact the school goes to the 8th grade. Teachers are great. :)

Some teachers have their favorites and if they don't like some students, they make it very hard for them.. They strip the student of their self expspections & dignity & self esteem. A teacher is their to teach, give self confidence & a good atmosphere. Some yell all day long. When you become a teacher ,besides teaching, you are there for support, free from harassment & teachers bulling.

I have 2 children at PS 71. (k and 2nd) The teachers are wonderful. They communicate with the parents and welcome parents to participate in the childrens education. I never had a problem getting in contact with the nurse or principal. My only issue is the the fact that the kindergarden students must leave the trailers to eat lunch/attend gym class in a different building. This is horrible when it is cold, raining and/or snowing. I've seen children w/o coats or hats in the cold walking from the trailer to the school. My son has gotten sick because of this. I'm sure most over crowded schools have this problem.

Still as wonderful, if not better, than when I went there - this is a great school. Both of my children attend PS 71; my daughter has been there for 6 years (since pre-k, back when it was still offered) and my son has been there for 2. My daughter is an excellent student and has been provided opportunities for enrichment throughout the years she has attended. My son struggles with school, but has extremely supportive teachers that communicate with me regularly. He's made tremendous progress in the time he's been a student. I am very pleased all-around. Should you choose to enroll your child, you can have the peace of mind that they will receive all the tools they need for school success from the talented and dedicated staff there.

I have 3 children in the school, and even though it is crowded it is a great school. That is why it is crowded!. My children have had great teachers, and if they need extra help they receive it. PS 71 holds nice activities for the kids and provides a safe environment for the students.

So far my chldren's experience at PS71 has been extremely exciting! My 9 yr old, now in 4th grade, was really struggling when she entered this school 3 yrs ago. Her teachers have been very engaged in helping her succeed in her classes. My 7 yr old, now in 2nd grade loves all his teachers. I love the communication the school keeps going with the parents and how they're always engaging the parents to become more involved with their children's school work and activitites

I love the Preparatory Academy at P.S. 71! My son comes home with good stories about his teachers; he has a great rapport with them. They always go above and beyond and help with questions I have and provide their emails so I can keep in touch with them; they take time out to help those that ask for it. He comes home and talks about the fun they have when in gym; the teachers are always open and receptive and create a fun, safe experience for them. The faculty is wonderful and help the children excel in the work-based environment, but there's alot of flexibility during the day while learning which gives them a sense of: 'Aaah, I can breath' and 'I can do this' attitude. Since the state learning standards were put in place the school environment has changed; but at P.S. 71 the faculty creates a decent amount of space, fun and time for them to excel. I like listening to his school stories because I feel better knowing he can enjoy learning in a great school where people care enough to not just teach, but to help them reach greater heights. I can't say enough about how everyone works as a team to create the great learning environment they need in order to compete and succeed in todays world.

I have been going to P.S.71 for 6 years now. I am really proud of my school for it's great teachers and my former student friends around me. I am excited to be going to middle school now. I see everyone in classes learning and always behaving in the higher grades. I'm glad my mother put me in this school in the first place. The teachers are sweet and caring. P.S. 71 seperates the higher grades from the lower grades really well. When I was in the lower grade I would never see a middle school kid. The only problem I have is the school lunch. It is not that great. Everything else is awsome and better than other schools.

I am a grandparent of 3 children attending ps 71. They have been there since pre k, and one is graduating 8th grade this year. I have found it to be an excellent school, and the children enjoy being there. They are doing well academically, and socially. Being so satisfied with the school, my family and I were very happy when it added the academy and took away the worries of having to choose a middle school. The parents who complain about the academy should be thrilled that their children can stay until 8th grade.

I am happy with my child's teacher so far this year, but that is about it. I agree, that a good amount of the staff are cold, have absolutely no manners or home training they are rude to the parents and the students and this is not the environment our children should be in for a good 6 hours of the day. When I call the school to ask a question I should get a pleasant voice on the other end of the phone not one that sounds like she can't be bothered. There are some aids that are very friendly, but most of them have a lack to people skills and our children should not be subjected to that. Also, there is a lack of attention to the lower grades.

The positive is that both of my children have had great teachers so far and it is a nice neighborhood. The negative is that it was a huge mistake adding the higher grades, the school and the principle have lost all focus on the lower grades. The principle and staff have there favorites, PTA meetings are a ghost town! What happen to parent involvement? The staff at the main office are not friendly, there rude and appear to be annoyed when asking them a question. And there down to 1 security guard? There should at least be 3 like they used to have. They have added outside trailers for the lower grades to make room inside the school, when in my opinion they should have spread out the children inside rather than adding in 7 & 8 th grades. I felt so positive about this school 3 years NOT NOW!

Being a new kindergarten mother, naturally i am concerned with my sons state of happiness, academic comprehension and discipline. Separation anxiety is an all to familiar progression with the young children - I am very happy to say that the staff or should i say the women who greet my child in the morning help to relieve some of that stress. They take a motherly interest in those kids whether or not they are mothers themselves. I see in them a true concern for my sons welfare and i tip my hat to them. Thanks for making many apprehensive kids feel not so worried about their new environment.

My son has attended PS 71 since the 3rd grade and the school has progressively worsened. The parent coordinator is/was a joke. I have been to some of the graduations and events and they seem to get more credit than they deserve. Communication with working parents is horrendous-sometimes you get notices the day before an event or something is due. I've even received notes after the fact and when you bring it up to someone at the school the response is in the oh, well better luck next time mode. The school is not what it used to be and is living off an old reputation. Disappointing at the very least considering its locale and community.

PS 71 used to be a decent school until they added 6-8. One of my children is in 5th grade now and I have only seen it deteriorate. [I think] Middle school age children should not be mixed in with elementary level children. Their language and lack of respect for teachers and parents is disturbing to say the least. Parent involvement is very low. For a school of more that 1400 children, at a PTA meeting you may, at most, see 30 parents. The cleanliness of the school is outrageous!

My 4th grader has had wonderful teachers since Kindergarten up to now. However,I would like to see more emphasis in Science and have more challenging science projects and reward them for their efforts in their projects. This year my son doesn't have a science teacher, however his class teacher is doing excellent teaching science. Also in foreign language my son is learning Spanish and I hope this continues, otherwise it would have been just a waste of time is it is only offered for one year. Better supervision is needed during lunch brake and times outside of the classroom.

When my son first PS71 in the third I was afraid for him the school is a very safe place with the help of the school safety officer Margaret, I also like the quality of education my son has receive from the teacher the teacher goes out for their student they push the children to learn with the small class size you do not have that in every school. I am especially grateful for Ms. Costello she is a wonderful teacher she give all she has to her student.

I have a daughter in the 3rd grade. I do like the school overall but so far the teachers my daughter has had are pretty scary. I do not feel my son is being challenged enough. I do not feel there is enough communication between the teacher and the parent if the child is not doing well or acting up. Could be just my luck now and the teachers will get better as she keeps going but I'am a little worried in that regard.

I am extremely disappointed with PS 71. I purposely bought a house near the school cause their test scores were above average. In the course of 5 years the scores have nose dived and are below the state averages in all grades but the 3rd. Something needs to be looked at before it gets worse. PS 175 on City Island are all over the top. These kids are our future!

Before my son entered into Kindergarden, I was extremely worried about the school he would attend. Unfortunately, the quality of public schools, has severely deteriorated throughout the years - but not at PS71. My son has attended PS 71 for the past three years, K-2nd grade and I have been very happy with the loving staff and hardworking PTA. He has had Ms. Miraglia for his 1st and 2nd grade class and she is absolutely phenominal. Ms. Reilly, the Parent Coordinator is a blessing to the parents. PS71 is a school that is full of learning, has a clean and safe environment with a caring staff. My son (and I) could not be any happier.

My daughter has been at PS 71 since kindergarten, she is currently starting 5th grade. The teachers and staff at PS 71 are exceptional. Under the quidance of Principal Cooper our school has excelled in every way. The assistant principals, Mrs. C and Mr. C and Mrs. Q have proven to be not only instrumental as leaders of PS 71 but also as friends to our children. Last but not least PS 71 has the most hard working and giving PTA's i've ever heard of. The work hard for the school but even harder for the students. Although my daughter doesnt have art and music (thanks to city budget cuts) the people involved with PS 71 make sure she gets all the 'extra's' possible. From afterschool sports, computers and enrichment programs to Saturday school to help with preparing for the citywide tests! PS71 is just great!
