I graduated from this school in 1988. This school is the foundation of true success and support. My eight years at St. John's prepared me for a world of success beyond my imagination. This school was the little house that heaven built among the war zones of the Bronx during the late seventies and eighties. I learn many academic principals, but most importantly, I learned about character. I will always be indebted to this school for everything it represented in my life during my earliest educational years. I currently hold a PHD in Education. I am often asked about my academic journey, I am proud to discuss St. John's Chrysostom. A school where the staff connected to their students. A school where I truly learned that my destination is just as important as my journey.
My daughter has attended SJC since Kindergarten, she is currently in the 7th grade. I would definitely recommend this school. The emphasis is on education and the staff and teachers are excellent. No one is perfect, they too are human. I think the tuition is very reasonable, considering other schools. (Believe me, I know...my older children went to Holy family and to Santa Maria...try that tuition compared to SJ's.). My daughter feels safe and happy at this school, she's looking forward to HS, but is already saying she is really going to miss everyone at SJ's.
I attended/graduated from St. John Chrysostom in 1999, now my children are students there as well. While St. John Chrysostom is a 'cozier' school, that is part of what makes it really great and unique. Students at St. Johns are known by name not an I.D number. Teachers/staff/students work along each other as would a family unit. Students at St Johns are offered a diverse and superior education and are often challenged to excel in all subjects. Emphasis is not only stressed on education but in personal development as well. The principal is very attentive towards her students and truly is almost a third parent in her concern and dedication. The school does only have a small gym and we did eat in cafeterias in the basement.........but all of my memories are fond. I left St. Johns with a heavy heart and eyes full of tears!!!
I am a graduate from this school 07 yea i did not like to many teachers but i can say the people i meet there were really awesome and there are to teachers that impacted my life Mr.Weber 7th & 8th grade social studies teacher he is one of the best teachers i ever had & ms Blount she is no longer teaching but she was amazing. I hated the school while I was in it but when i left i started to miss it. I learned a lot at the school it was a very nice place to spend 11 years of my life.
My daughter has attended SJC since she was 4 attending the pre-k 4 program. She is now in 4th grade. This is a school i would recommend to any parent who is looking for an affordable private education. The teachers are informative, instructional and expect a lot from their students. The administrative office, principal, keep parents well informed. The school environment, class sizes and discipline are many of the key factors i believe this school is excellent.
I am actually a student at this school and I personally do not like it but i recommend it for a lot of people because they do teach you a lot and they do get you ready for exams. My teacher Ms.Oliveras is actually a very good teacher
I am a student who graduated from SJC in the Class of 08'. No offense, but I think you have to actually go to the school to know what it's REALLY like. I ABSOLUTELY DEFINITELY RECOMMEND St. John Chrysostom School. The school really prepares you for high school. A lot of the things I am learning now in highschool were taught to me in SJC. The teachers are GREAT. Not only do they prepare you the best they can for high school, but they really care about you. The classes are also very interesting. In general, if you would like your child to attend an elementary school that will prepare him/her for state exams/high school, has a great, interesting classes, and a loving faculty, then I suggest you send them to St. John Chyrsostom. =]
My son has attended this school since Prek-3. In overall, I think this is a great school. I do wish they had more sports available for kids in 4th grade and above. I also think they should have a website for parents to able to keep track of their kids test scores as well as the next subject for review.
My daughter has been going to the school since the age of 3 and she's 13 now. I have seen tremendous growth in her not only as a student but also as a person. Everyone always talks about how well rounded, well spoken and smart she is. I have also had the chance to observe other kids her age and they don't know half as much as she does. If you think St John is expensive wait until it's time for high school.
St. john's is a great school i juss graduated this year and i have so many fond memories. yes the tuition is high but the school was always trying to help my mother and to me a good education is worth more to me than money. And yes as a student i dont mind the days off but they seem to be working because a lot of the kids in our school are average or above average. i have attended this school since i was 3 years old and i loved it and now my younger cousins go there. this school has made me the student i am today and school trips are not important education means alot more than any field trip. The classes are small in some public schools classes can obtain as many as forty to fifty children. 20 children to a teacher seems reasonable to me.
I find the tuition expensive plus $250.00 in fund raiser,$1.00 for dress down days. The school has too many days off specially for teachers meetings, they need to be after school because they already leave at 2:15 M-T and fridays 1:20, this causes us working parents a lot headache and extra money. They need to update school activities for example there was only 1 trip in the year for my childs class. Only 2 assemblys in the school year and one was graduation. They also must cut class size they are too large. The education they provide is good because of that reason I keep my daughter there but if the tuition increases I would have to consider a charter school.
This school is old catholic with old ideas needs fresh and young ideas, and they do not accomadate kids with special needs.
A couple of observations: - The teachers have no control in the classrooms. - The administration is overwhelmed and does not know how to solve problems. - There are way too many days off. - The gym is way too small. - Classroom size is way too large (40 or more per clasroom).
Yes, they do have too many days off. The tuition is somewhat high, and the school definitely needs remodeling. This is all true but when it comes down to the education without a doubt it is all worth it. My son is currently in PreK 4 and I have witnessed tremendous growth throughout this past year. My son knows all of his prayers, he has learned addition and subtraction. He has also learned all sounds and letter combinations that make different sounds. When he started this year I read the reviews and was not sure if the education would be the same as public school. I am thankful that i decided to invest in my son's academic foundation.
St John Chrysostom is a very good school, but the price is way to high and they charge for everything. Another Problem is that they have to many days off. Otherwise is a very good school
My daughter actually attends this school and does very well and has excelled amazingly and is graduating this year in 2008. St. John Chrysostom does need a few adjustments but otherwise is a good place for achieving students.
I attended and graduated from St. John's Chrysostom. My son now attends. He has learned so much from his teachers. Personally, St. John's was the foundation in my life and is responsible for my career today. I support St. John's all the way! Too much money some say? Our children's education should never have a price !
I personally attended St. John Chrysostom school. It's an amazing school to attend. Every teacher takes time to get to know their students. This school is like a community- everyone knows everyone. Students excel there because they are challenged to do their best. The principal is a sweet-hearted person who always looks out for the best interests of the students. The asst. principal is the same; always on the look-out for better things. The teachers are excellent when it comes to academics. The school has an amazing library system that greatly benefits all of the students. The science department- equipped with great equipment that allows the students to analyze the world at its best. St. John Chrysostom is, without a doubt, one of the best schools in New York, if not the best. Not to mention the Christian values instilled in the students. Every parent should try to enroll their kids.
Love his Kindergarten teacher, Mrs. Almonte. They raised their tuition (which was way too high to begin with) and they charge for every little thing (like fundraising, dress-down days, etc). Not sure if this is all worth it or if he would get the same education in public school.
