I enrolled my son and withdrew him a month later. They have a poor curriculum. The material given to him was pre k material and he was entering Kindergarten. They do not offer lunch, no counselor on board, no nurse in house, the school smells. Msgr Whalen has the most arrogant attitude who tried to patronize me when I questioned the curriculum.
It is sad to think that a parent would consider this a school worthwhile. Although I am sure the teachers care about their students, the creativity and education standards at this school are appaling. I just attended an Open House at this school and the facilities were very poor especially the 'Library' which consisted of two or three shelves of old books for the entire student body of Pre-K to 8th grade. Worst of all the students that were showing us around mentioned that they can't even remember the last time there was a fire drill! Pre-K and Kindergarten do not go outside during the day. What ever happened to fresh air for our kids? It is a sad example of what our education system has dwindled to.
I feel that St. Benedict is a safe school. The principal is very involved (she knows just about all the kids' names); she upholds the rules and regulations. The con to this school is that there is no music, sports or extracurricular activities, they focus too much on fund raisers and not enough on activities for the children. The parents have to go outside of the school in order to find programs.
While I feel that a child will receive a good education at this school, there are just a few things that need to be addressed by the administration. First is that, if you have a child who is learning-disadvantaged, there are no quality resources within the school for them. Second, and perhaps most important, is the lack of consistent discipline both for behavior and academics. It seems that the behavioral-problem children are coddled, the 'good' children who may make a mistake, are made examples of in an extreme way, and that is detrimental to all. Overall, though, I would recommend this school to others.
I think this school still needs a lot of help. If your looking for a strict school then this is not the school for you. Children pretty much get away with a lot. They don't require you to sign any test papers nor homework. When it comes to your child you are not informed immediately! In order for this school to be beneficial to the children as well as the parents things like this need to change.
My child is currently enrolled in this school. The success of this school is attributed to the leadership of the principal and pastor. Mrs. A is a hands-on and roll-up your sleeve individual. She cares about each and every student's success. The pastor Msgr. Whalen, a brilliant individual, is very involved in day to day operations of the school and puts the school and the children's well-being and education at the very top of his priority list.
I strongly believe that St. Benedict's profound improvements (in all areas) is due to the leadership of the new Principal and Pastor!
I graduated from this school in 1973. My oldest son graduated from thi school in 2002. I find the school to be a very good place to learn and the faculty to be helpful.
