I am so disappointed with the leadership in this school. My child has been attending SFX for 2yrs and this will be the last. I have to admit the teachers are good and the students are well rounded, lovely children; but the principal is horrible. She cannot/does not make any decisions on subjects that matter, she is more concerned with appearance. If SFX had stronger, better leadership the school would excel instead of fall short. Children in other schools in the neighborhood are being challenged academically while SFX is trailing far behind. As a parent I would advise others to spend their money elsewhere. The school has declined and will continue to with the current leadership.
I'm sorry to say that this school does not care for all the children. It cares more about appearances to other schools and parents. The pastor wonders why the school is losing money - its because there is no actual leadership. The principal has overstayed her welcome and is ineffective. She does not inspire but uses negativity in dealing with the children. Therer are teachers that are not only faculty but parents of students as well, THOSE students are the lucky ones - the special treatment is disgusting. At least it teaches the other kids how to deal with disappointment. The levels of math, english and science are no where near where they should be when these children graduate. Most high schools in the area can point out children that graduated from SFX by their unbelievable lack of knowledge in math.
St Francis Xavier The Bronx New York is a school that REALLY cares for the children. The principal, teachers, aides, cafeteria and maintenance, every one is so friendly and kind. It kind of reminds you with the good old days when our Catholic Schools were under the care of such devoted and dedicated Religious Sisters and Brothers.
My child graduated Pre-K at St. Francis Xavier School in June. She has learned a great deal from Mrs. Dolgow, whose experience of almost 30 years, made a true difference. She was very patient with my daughter and gave her much needed guidance and structure. Her pleasant demeanor made learning fun. Mrs. Blandino was so helpful and always kind to me and my child. Also, Mrs. Deegan was always approachable and involved in student life. Lastly, the gym program was a great outlet for the children and the instructor was well experienced. I am happy to be a part of the SFX family.
I went to St. Francis Xavier for 6 years and graduate 5 years ago. I can't comment on how the new pastor is doing but everything else I can comment on. The teachers in this school are great and friendly for the most part. The teachers meet with parent after school if they need to talk about grades. Some teachers provide extra help if students need it and parents request it. The problem I have with this school school is not the the teachers but the leadership of it. The principal is very cold and has no idea what shes doing. They spend money not on education but on public image or for the parents who rule the school. The principal bows down to the few parents who rule the school. The teachers can't punish the kids because the parents who rule the school will get their kids out of any and all kinds of trouble. The principal sides with the parents over the teachers. If your not in that in group of parents who rule the school you have no chance of getting your voice heard and your kid will be nothing but an unknown. This school can be good only they get some new leadership and the in group of parents lose control of it.
My child attended Pre-K here. He was asked to leave after a couple of months due to "behavioral" issues. Update - he's been attending public school in a gifted and talented program for the last 3 years. I guess his issue was that they don't know how to deal with above average kids. What a waste of time this sh#thole was.
Stop putting the school down because it is the best in the area. I graduated from this school over 20 yrs ago and now my daughter attends the school. My child was in a public school struggling to pass her grades. we never felt comfortable nor at ease with her going to public school. In october we decided to enroll her here. It was the best decision we ever made. She has the teacher that taught me. My daughter smiles everyday and is doing 100% better. The principal and father mathew opened their arms to my daughter and i love it that they both know their students by first names. This school makes my daughter feel comfortable and at home. The classes are small and the teachers are awesome. I always know what is going on with my daughter, the only thing is the Parent association, very clicky and does not welcome any parent to particiapate if your not in their click. And I'm not. I would love to become a member but they told me no because the year is closed. Never heard of that but oh well. Thank you Mrs. Deagan and Father Mathew for excepting my daughter. We love it here...
If the people that wrote reviews would stop knocking the school and help try to make the school a better place maybe it would not be a 2 star school. My children went to the school and the school was the best in the neighborhood. Better than "St. Clares". The principal is St Clares leaves a lot to be desired. So grow up and stop knocking the school and do something to help the school. If you do not like something that you see is going on go and speak to the principal. She is not an ogre. My grandchildren go to the school now. Yes, the school is small but I believe that some children need a smaller school verses an overcrowded school with over 30 kids or more in the class.
We are new in this area and our kids just started the new beginnings and pre k. We love the school, the church, the teachers, the principal. For now their curriculum is fine. My prek student has homework every night. I think some of these reviews on here are strange... One parent posted in 2011 and 2012 about working parents not being included.. Both my husband and I work full time. I have no idea what this parent is talking about. I guess if you want to make a best friend with the other moms that might not happen. The school has great activities. We are really pleased. It is a great little school. I may not keep them here until 8th grade but right now it's perfect. I was put off by these reviews before I actually went to the school and checked it out myself. In other words I think some one is leaving misleading reviews here.
They say they are "A School You Can Believe In", when it should say "Celebrate mediocrity with us!" My daughter rarely comes home with homework because the teacher allows students to complete homework *during* school time. Homework is necessary for children to continue to learn at home. The teacher does not check her students' class work--she has students check their work by providing the answers. Spelling errors in exams, class work or homework are rarely pointed out. Homework is checked, but the student's answer as provided without context is never questioned. The environment is toxic. Parents are running the school. I have never seen so many miserable kids in one place. If you want your child *challenged* in the classroom, go elsewhere. There is no consistency among the teachers as regards expectations from their students. This school has glorified babysitters, with benefits, as teachers. Tell me how this is a school to believe in. A recent ad in the paper touted Mrs. Deegan's dream that every child have an Ipad because it's a tool that will "enhance the learning environment." A dream indeed and a waste of your hard earned money.
Simply put, St. Francis Xavier provides its students with an inferior education. My child no longer attends this school as I felt he deserved better than out-of-date instructional practices with absolutely no differentiation, extremely large class sizes, insensitive administrators, and a complete lack of appreciation for creativity and ingenuity. I knew for a fact that this was not the place for my super bright and energetic young son when I was reading the student writing posted outside of the principal's office. They were all the same cookie-cutter, formulaic standards, clearly indicating to me that these students are not encouraged to think creatively and critically. Students in middle school and high school are now being held to higher students in order to compete in today's world, and St. Francis Xavier's "one size fits all instruction" is just not going to prepare him/her to succeed. My son is now challenged, engaged, and excelling in his education in another school!
As a former student of St. Francis Xavier, I can honestly say it is the poorest excuse for a school. At St. Francis I was always at what I thought was the top of my class with a 92 average. I did well in core subjects such as Math, Science, Social Studies. After graduating and moving to Westchester County and attending one of the nation's best public schools in an affluent area, I was struggling and getting 80s in the subjects that I thought I knew so well. The difference between this catholic school and a great public high school is so large that it is astounding. The principal of the school should be ashamed to call herself a principal. After reading the previous comments, I see that nothing has changed since I left in June 2008 as the parents are still running the school. It is sad that a group of nobodies are in charge of a school that could be great if the curriculum, administration, and teaching staff changed
I want parents to know what i wish i knew before sending my son to this school. If you are a working parent then you should know you will be shut out and your child will not have a fair share in this school. It is parent controlled. I do have to say I like the TEACHERS and wish they weren't working for this school. Mothers think they are the teachers talk about one another and judge EVERYONE. Classes are to large and not enough attention given to students. Not enough PE, and rushed during lunch. Always MONEY HUNGRY.....donations so it reads. Do your research before reg. your child for this school. Its every child and parent for themself in this school. I am trying to save parents the nightmare i lived. Again the teachers are great.......principal can't believe she calls herself a principal. Please find another catholic school nearby,

I am a former student at SFX and it couldn't be a better school. The teachers don't judge you, they really help you. They really got me prepared for high school and now I'm doing very well. The students at the school are great and very outgoing. The sports at the school are very fun to be a part of and even better to watch because they are very good. Whoever is saying all these bad things about the school maybe they were the ones being bad and getting in trouble, or the school wasn't for you. SFX is a wonderful school you should send your child to and trust me I know.
After 8+ years as a parent at SFX, I have to agree 100% about "certain" parents running the school and the favoritism regading sports.
The pre-k class is overcrowded, so much so that each student does not get personalized attention. The teaching methods while good, are to strict for a 4-year old. The class size makes it difficult for teachers to deal with those kids that may need extra attention.
St. Francis Xavier School is not a school you can believe in. It is a school where your child will be ostracized if they do not play sports or have a parent who is highly involved within the school. The bright kids get overlooked and only the sports stars shine here. The education could be better and the prinicpal needs to tell the parents to get lost. The parents run this school. It's sad because this school once had a good reputation, but that good reputation is long gone now! I'm sure this school will eventually close because the enrollment is constantly decreasing!
From the the first day of school my child did not seem happy. I could not even say his teacher's name without him crying that he did not want to go there. After a month I called the principal and asked if we should have a conference about my son and she stated that we could speak over the phone. In that conversation she basically expelled my child from the school. I was stunned at how unprofessional this was considering the sensitive nature of the school's decision. It was very cold and callous. The parents definitely run the school and the administration bows down to the cliques of parents in the school. Do not send your child here if you want your child in a warm, loving, and welcoming environment. My son is in a new Catholic school and he never experienced any of the problems he did at St. Francis.
This is not a real school! Parents don't spend your money on this school! Try St.Clare's just down the street. In this school the parents are in charge- not the principal. The parents make the rules and run everything! Trust me- I took my kids out of there!
