Love, love, love HLA! My daughter has been going to HLA since the first opened in 2009. The school has grown, and matured so nicely. The cohesiveness of the administration, and the staff provides such a strong environment for our kids. My daughter's teachers are our saviors. This also includes the school social worker, who is a gift from above. My daughter has excelled beyond my expectations. When one of her teachers runs downstairs when I pick her up just to tell me that she wanted to cry from happiness because of major strides my child made that day, it makes me want to cry. To see the teachers that invested in these kids is invaluable. The curriculum is so strong, and parental input is always welcome. HLA deserves recognition. What a wonderful community.

Both my kids attend HLA and absolutely love it. They have great teachers and so many activities that other schools do not offer. I am so happy that my children have this opportunity to attend a great school.

My son just started at HLA this year. He loves going to school and is learning amazing things. He gets to have gym daily, chess, music and art. He is rapidly learning to read and speak hebrew. His memory is challenged every week by memorizing a poem. He learns about nature and is surrounded by a multicultural group of wonderful kids. He even asks when he'll get to go to school in the school holidays. I love the uniforms as it has eliminated morning struggles as to which spider man tee shirt he wants to wear :). He's recently been on a field trip to the botanical gardens which he couldn't stop talking about. The teachers are wonderful and caring. There are two teachers per class unlike one per 25 kids at a regular ps. The school is like a private school for free. I feel great about my choice and will send my you get son there as well.

I heard so many wonderful things about this school and their teachers. I can't wait for my son to be part of it.!

Posted June 24, 2013

This was my son s first year at HLA. (We won the lottery) He entered in 3rd grade with no experience of the Hebrew language. Eight months later, he knows hebrew well enough to read, write, and speak. As for the general education, his teacher held high yet realistic expectations of her students. (Which I loved) There seems to be a better balance of diversity among staff and the student population, that is compared to the local public school my son had previously attended. My son s peers are equally motivated to learn and do well, something I believe is important in fostering a better learning climate. Overall, HLA is a better fit for my son and we are happy and proud to be here!

Our child loves HLA. She excels in math and sciences, loves the languages and has great friends. It's a private school for free. Highly recommended to all, good luck getting in though. There is a lottery and if you don't get in, there is a long waiting list.

My sons are in the third and fourth grades at HLA. I am extremely pleased with the the high scholastic standards as well as the creative and nurturing environment. The school leadership is an excellent team of professionals who strive to provide the best education for the children of HLA. The curriculum is challenging and multi-faceted and the students truly benefit. I feel very fortunate to have enrolled my children at this wonderful school.

Don't believe everything you read. The HLA has low academic expectations. Also, some of the kids don't belong in this school because they have behavior problems and don't want to study. You're better off sending your child to your local public school.

HLA is a wonderful school with great potential. It has the best teachers and leadership team. The teachers work very hard and strive to provide warm and caring environment for kids. Principal, Mrs.Silver, will always find time to listen to parent's concern and will find a way to address any issues or suggestions for improvement. Kids have exposure to variety of disciplines. In addition to math, english, hebrew, they also have art, gym, music, and chess classes. I feel lucky my kids are part of this great school.

I have a child in second grade and one in kindergarten. This is our first year at HLA, and we are thrilled so far. Both of my children have a lot of friends and happy to be there. Although there is HW everyday (like most schools), it isn't too much, and it seems to reinforce what is being studied in class. I was concerned the teachers would be inexperienced because this is a charter school, but am pleased with the level of control and education that seems to be happening in the schools. Truthfully, I am thrilled my kids are here, and feel lucky they got in.

HLA is a wonderful school. I have one child in 1st grade and another child in 3rd grade. They both love going to school, love learning, and love all the extracarricular activities they get in school. This school has a private school feel to it. The principal and teachers are always available for a chat. They address any concerns a parent may have and actually do something about it. HLA offers a safe and fun learning environment. Strongly recommend applying.

HLA creates an environment full of opportunities for its students. I assigned my child to HLA, despite her passing G&T test. As a charter school, they outperform the schools in the district. Their math and reading classes are differentiated in order to push better performing kids further and to pay all the necessary attention to the rest of the kids. Unlike many other schools that get their classes cut to a minimum, HLA offers physical education, art, music, and even chess every week! On top of everything else, the kids are learning a second language from kindergarten. By the end of the first year, my daughter understood a friend who spoke Hebrew to her and replied appropriately. I believe the students get great academic foundation and get to develop as more versatile individuals. I also appreciate the approachability of the school personnel, the teachers, the curriculum director, the principal. Ms. Laura Silver, the principal takes parental concerns seriously, and follows up on them. I like that HLA has all these advantages, and I love that my 7-years old daughter is looking forward to school every day. She loves it, she feels loved in it, and I feel lucky that she goes there.

The school offers unique education. Children get immersed in Hebrew studies from kindergarten, and the quality of education is so good that my kid is now fluent although we don't even speak the language at home! The general studies are taught well too - the math and English curriculum is strong - and the kids get chess, music, arts and gym daily. When the budget is cut in so many public schools, HLA enjoys more and more courses that help every child find their special talent. The only downside is that it's very hard to get into the school as the selection is by lottery only so I would encourage all parents to fill out the application form and if you don't get in, keep trying to get into the school through the waiting list - it is definitely worth it for your child.

About the tests

Beginning in the 2012-2013 school year, the New York State Department of Instruction implemented new assessments designed to be aligned with the Common Core State Standards. The new standards for proficiency in these subjects are higher than in previous years and the percent of students earning a proficient score is expected to be lower as a result of this change. See this letter from New York's Commissioner of Education for more information on these changes.

In 2013-2014 New York used the New York State Assessments to test students in grades 3 through 8 in English language arts and math, and in grades 4 and 8 in Science. At present 2013-14 results are available only for English language arts and math. The tests are standards-based, which means they measure how well students are mastering specific skills defined for each grade by the state of New York. The goal is for 90% of students to meet or exceed grade-level standards on the tests.

The NYC Department of Education asked parents, teachers and students about their school's learning environment. Results provide insight into school climate, such as whether the school is academically rigorous, safe, communicative and collaborative. Learn more

The information captured by the survey is designed to support a dialogue among all members of the school community about how to make the school a better place to learn. An overall category score is calculated for each respondent group (parents, teachers, or students) by averaging the scores of the questions within that survey category.

Category scores for each of the respondent groups are then combined to form overall category scores. Alongside the results for each school are the aggregated results across all NYC public schools, which are provided as a basis for comparisons.
