PS 5 is a wonderful school! Ms. Gates is an excellent principal and the teachers work very hard with what they have in order to make sure that EVERY student recieves a top top TOP education. Go to the school and visit for yourself. All schools have their good and not so good situations but, at PS 5 you will see the good absolutely out ways the not.
This school is the worse school that I have ever placed my child in. My son is in the 1st grade there is no structure in the school, if your a parent that is invovled with your child and you would like to know your child's progress the information they tell you is "i don't know". Some of the children are so disrespectful they dont raise there hands, they just walk out the classroom some of the students even speak to their teachers like their grown. I would never recommend my enemy to this school. This school receives NO STARS. This school is a set up for our children to FAIL I'm taking my child out of this school when I find another school.
My son has been going to this school since last year. I am disappointed with his reading skills. I try to help him but I am not exactly sure how. I feel like he is falling through the cracks. He was mixed with children last year who the teacher did not seem to have much control over. I am hopelessly frustrated with this school and many others in our community. We are being set up to fail. Every one is raving about the extracurricular activities, for what, for their own freedom. Be concerned with the better education and welfare of the children. They are not learning at a level that will make them eligible to compete. Unless principals teachers and parents get it together history is doomed to repeat itself.
This is a great school. Their academic programs are successful. There are good extracurricular activities available for all students who want to take the opportunity to attend. My greatest concern is the parents involvement. Because of the lack of parent involvement in this school decisions are left up to a small group of people. Should more parents become more involved in this would be a better school.
I know that the school is a wonderful school. I have three children that go there now and they are in the 4th and 5th grade. There teachers are wonderful and they learn all kinds of subjects. You can go in the classroom and talk to the teachers if you are having a problem with there work. The maths teacher is the best because I love maths and I love to learn there style that they are doing in the schools now.
my son have been coming here since kindegarden and is now in the 5th grade and when ever I needed to no about my son I was always helped he came here not noing to much of anything as the years went on he has inproved a lot I really think this is a wonderful school.the teachers are great the principal is very understanding.
there are two wonderful schools in brooklyn, new york, public school #3 and public school 5. in public school 5 the staff is wonderful to the children, they provide a very safe environment for the children. every staff person in the school from the principal, lunch room staff, custodial staff know all the children by name, they are aware of the familial background of each child and they love and are concerned about their welfare. there may be some dissension among parents and staff, however, the staff's main concern is the education of the children; one thing has nothing to do with the other. hopefully more parents will become involved with the activities of the school. when parents become involved in their child's school the child will excel.
Communication is a huge problem at this school. When communication problems do happen the staff is not very nice about it. Often ending in shouting matches for minor misunderstandings. Parents seem to feel discouraged at helping out at the school because of the often negative attitude of the staff. The students use swear words on a regular basis with apparently little or no reprimand. Student disruptions in the classrooms is a regular occurance. Instruction is adequate, my children have improved their reading levels greatly. They do receive instruction in Art, computers, music and gym. Teacher communication is another problem. We have experienced situations such as a teacher running out of enough copies of the weeklyn homework so my child has no idea what their assignment is, to a teacher not turning in fundraiser money and we were not informed of the situation until weeks after the fundraiser items had arrived.
