Want to improve this school’s profile? You can!

All schools on GreatSchools begin with BASIC completeness, which includes important information like contact details and test scores. It’s up to the school community to take the next steps. As a parent or community member, you can share what you know with other families by writing a review or answering a few questions about what the school offers. As a school leader, you can upload photos, describe school programs, and more with an Official school profile.

The completeness meter moves to INTERMEDIATE, then ADVANCED, and finally HONOR ROLL as you complete the following: 10 or more reviews, at least 1 photo, and 9 program questions parents find helpful.

Our child has been a student at PS 9 since First Grade, and we have been somewhat happy with the experience. The G&T class is the only diverse class in each grade. A great deal of time has been set aside from inquiry to prep the kids for the Common Core tests, and one gets the sense that the school is struggling to make the grade. The middle school options are not great, and the school does not have any record of placing students in notable middle schools. Everyone wants the school to succeed but several of its best teachers have left in the past two years. One fifth grade parent asked the teacher who taught their child in the third and fourth grades for a middle school recommendation, and the teacher refused.

My child is a 3rd grader and has been a student since pre-k. It's a good neighborhood school with a warm, friendly environment, varied curriculum, and an energetic & diverse community. It has a core group of parents who have been strong advocates for the school. The school's potential - which is that to Park Slope's 321- has not yet been realized in my opinion. The adminstration/teachers have many good qualities but need to do more to meet the demands of a changing neighborhood that has put a greater focus on improving the school's environment & academics. The principal has been too loyal to long-time employees that are not dynamic enough to keep up with the school's growth. The neighborhood - home owners, real estate companies & local businesses - are also somewhat to blame as it has been a bit slow to realize that a thriving PS9 is good for the community. They need to contribute far more to the school than they are currently doing. Too many homeowners of 2-3 MM homes do not send their kids here nor contribute to the school financially. The DOE has not been a friend to PS9 either and certainly has caused the school stress right at the time that it was beginning to grow & excel.

I am very pleased and happy with P.S.9. My children love it. They are very engaged and enjoy going to shcool everday. Only one draw back, I wished the class size was much smaller. Overall though excellent school definitely recommend for your little ones.

My daughter is beginning her second year at PS 9. We have absolutely enjoyed their attention to the whole child. The school is a community where everyone is able to participate and interact with one another. Parents lend their gifts and talents to the success of the school. Teachers learn the kids and positively interact with them regardless of which class or grade they are in. My daughter is in the dual language program and is thriving both academically and bilingually. The open door policy of the principal is because she genuinely cares about everyone in her community. My son went to private school K - 12 and I honestly did not feel the interconnection and thriving community connection that I now feel with PS 9 with any of the schools he attended.

We are extremely happy with PS 9. Our son is in 2nd grade, and absolutely loves it. He has had terrific teachers and is reading above his grade level. The PTO is very active, and the community is invaluable. I do wish the school had more money to help enhance the teacher to student ratio. We need more TAs and substitutes.

PS9 is the epitome of what a neighborhood public school should be. It's a nurturing place that cares about its children and its families and provides a strong foundation to the neighboring community. There are other schools around that may have fancier programs or certainly better funding, but this place is ours -- we love it and it loves us back. I have two boys attending the school and they are happy to get there every single day. The parents and teachers and administration all work together, with egos and other agendas laid aside, to do the best they can do for the children and the strength of the community as a whole.

I am really excited for my child to be attending our fantastic neighborhood school. My son has finished his third week of Kindergarten, and I see tremendous growth in his reading skills. His teacher is fantastic, really great with the kids and very in charge, hard to do with 20 5 year olds. I am very impressed with the Principal and her passion for the kids, and in particular for her passion in having the children learn academically and emotionally. The environment is very positive. There is a tremendous amount of parent involvement in the school, and a large focus on fundraising. Sadly, the librarian that was hired last year was let go due to budget cuts.

My Children love PS 9 and so does my husband and I!. Ms. D'Avilar is great Principal loves children and it shows; she has a wonderful open door policy. As busy as she is she takes the time out listen to each parents concerns and child's. She is fair and always puts the kids' safety first. The parent coordinator is amazing! She is always keeping the school up to date on all school activities and issues and sends out weekly communications via email to all PS 9 parents so that you are in the know. The PTO is also amazing! They are so involved; they work closely with the Principal and staff to make sure all their classroom needs are met. PS 9 focuses on the whole child! I have been a PS 9 parent for 4 years so far, and I have been very pleased with the education children have been receiving. My kids are actually excited to go to school each day. Each class has their own shutterfly website so that even if you weren't able to chaperone a trip, attend a performance or a classroom event/celebration you have a chance to view pictures or videos and feel like you didn't miss a thing.

My son is in Kindergarten at P.S.9, he enjoys going to school each day. My initial concern was his transition from Daycare/Pre-k type of setting in to a larger school. It was easy and pleasant. The staff and parent volunteers have this down to a science. This school is in a great community, and you can clearly see the parents involvement, desire to have a successful school in a nuturing way. One tiny concern is that his classroom is a bit cluttered. i am observing this setting, as I do realize it is the beginning of the school year and the teacher may not have had a chance to set up / store/ move items. Some schools have a "no homework" policy for kindergarten, but PS 9 believes in giving homework. It is beneficial to the kids and the parents. I can see how my son enjoys it, and how much he is learning. For working parents, they have a very decent start time of 8:20 (I know one family that has a start time of 8:40) and offer after-school options, & a variety of enrichment programs.

PS 9 has been amazing for our family for three years and counting! We have two children at the school and because we live in the neighborhood have also been watching the school grow over the last few years. Principal D'Avilar is strong and honest, and has a great vision for the school. Our children's teachers have all been excellent classroom managers while also being warm and personable. But the best part: our kids LOVE going to school and they are consistently engaged and challenged, and learning at exactly the pace I expect them to be. The PTA has a solid core of active parents and is working hard to get more families involved with fundraising, etc., as the school has been transitioning from majority low-income to one that is socio-economically very diverse. There are challenges involved in that but from what I have seen PS 9 addresses those challenges with great community spirit and lots of good energy!

Our school is a wonderful environment for children. Full of energy from both parents and children our school provides the best support system. My two daughters are flourishing at P.S. 9. They are eager to go to school. They love the teachers staff and their classmates. I'm not a fan of the public school system. But if every school operated like P.S. 9. My elder son, probably would've attended public school. Thank you P.S. 9 for all you do for my children education.

My daughter started at PS 9 last year in the dual language K. I consider our continued experience with PS 9 to be awesome. The sense of community among both parents and students is incredible. P.S. 9 is off to a great start for school year 2013-14! Teachers, staff and school Leadership are in great form and continue to provide excellent education to the children of this diverse neighborhood public school, despite ongoing budget cuts which plague all traditional public schools in NYC and beyond. Just two weeks into the school year, the Parent Teacher Organization raised a large amount of money to support the school by holding an amazing carnival fundraiser in the school playground.

PS9 has an immense, energizing community of involved families and lifelong learners. PS9 was selected as one of 10 schools in the Whole Child Network to engage in a 3-year, comprehensive school improvement process towards better educational outcomes by taking into account students' physical, social and emotional needs as well as the traditional academic and intellectual ones. Enormous creative energy and activism offset budget challenges. And students thrive happily here.

Don't look at the test scores if you have a young child! We've lived in the neighborhood for 12+ years. The neighborhood has undergone a remarkable transformation, especially in the past 5 years. PS9 used to have a bad name. Parents with $$$ put their kids in private school or left. This is a thing of the past. Nowadays, smart people move here for PS9. My only child is in currently in Pre-K at PS9. We love her teacher and are amazed at the quality of education we get, for free. New neighbors own their houses and have a vested interest. PK-2nd grade classes are great right now. As this new batch of kids moves up, those test scores will follow. After-school programs/other enrichment options are affordable, loving and good. The PTA is extremely active. Last year the school unexpectedly lost a lot of money because too few children qualified for school lunch (changing demographic). The PTA sprung into action and, with support of the principal and her team, raised enough money from donations and grants to fill the hole. Criticism: morning announcements are too longwinded. The principal likes her own voice too much. A small price to pay though. Highly recommend this school.

We live in the PS9 zone and have been watching, researching and attending events at this school for several years, as we have two children who are now, or are approaching, school age. We've been so impressed with what we've seen at the school that despite touring multiple so-called "progressive" public schools available in this district, PS9 was easily our first choice. Sadly, the pre-K program is so popular in the community that we couldn't get our child in! But we started kindergarten recently and so far it has been really wonderful - teachers who are warm, rigorous and responsive, dynamic principal, and enthusiastic and involved parents. The kids are wonderful, of course! We are so excited to see how the rest of the year goes!

I currently have a 3rd grader at 9 who was first enrolled in pre-k. The schools has gotten better over the years and the teachers are wonderful. One negative aspect of 9 is its plagued with a political atmosphere and favortism. My child has had to major incidents where principal D'avilia stated corrective measures would be put in place and it never happened. I even to to get the parent coordinator involved but she just went along with the principal. The principal claims to have an open door policy but its only for a select few.

Our son is in pre-k at PS9 and we are absolutely delighted. He has a wonderful teacher and the class size is small with a good teacher:student ratio. They have science, Spanish, cooking, acrobatics and library as extra classes. The classroom is filled with art and science projects. The principal is amazing and has made PS9 a wonderful community school which is such an asset to Prospect Heights. The teachers are extremely dedicated and the parents are super involved. We can't wait for Kindergarten!

I love the way the principal treats the children and the family members who support the children that attend PS9. I find it extremely exciting to enter a building wherein a student actually holds the door open for others who are about to enter the school. A smile runs across my face when I think of all of the hard work that goes into the awesome activities that the school's PTA provides for the children. The fact that parental involvement is encouraged constantly creates for a wonderful environment in the school and the community at large! Thanks to the teachers, administrators, support staff, PTA, and our children who continue to help push PS9 towards excellence!

My son is in kindergarten there and he absolutely loves it! I have been very pleased so far - the curriculum, the diversity, the dedication of the principal and staff...the only drawbacks are a bit of overcrowding and the school needs funding for additional programs and resources so a lot of the "extras" fall on the parents. I will not complain though because its all for the children but there are certain families who cannot afford to provide these extra materials so I am certain that can be a burden. Hopefully the school will be able to raise the funding it needs to better our children's education and overall school experience.

PS 9 is a welcoming school. The administration and PTA work closely together to encourage parent/teacher involved programs. There are many educational events that allow parents to be actively involved in their child's daily routine. PS 9 is a wonderfully inviting school. The teachers are committed and make learning fun. The principal is accessible and is sincerely focused on the enrichment of the children and the overall school community. As a result, the parent involvement is growing, which makes it an exciting time to be part of this school!

I am both a parent and teacher at PS 9. I love the school because PS 9 really cares about children and ensures all students succeed in all areas of learning.

Our school is like family, with caring faculty and great spirit, and it's in a wonderful neighborhood, close to the playground, central library, and Prospect Park.

I have lived in my neighborhood for almost 5 years and I have seen PS9 grow from a school noone touched to one that is sought after. The principal has made great strides and I am excited for my son to be part of this vibrant school.

An amazing school that's on its way to being even more fantastic. Terrific parent involvement, a family-like feel, committed and creative teachers and charismatic leadership.

we moved to prospect heights four years ago and didn't really even have schools on our radar, so we weren't expecting much when we sent our daughter to pre-k, but we've been overwhelmed with the quality of the teachers, the diversity, the involvement of the parents, and the caliber of the kids. It's a great learning atmosphere that my daughter loved. She's headed to kindergarten there in a week, and her sister is following suit to pre-k. I mean, her pre-k teacher is a mom, lives in the neighborhood, has an MBA and a black belt in karate! How can you beat that? She also has learned the salsa and I'm looking forward to her learning how to jump double dutch.

My disappointment in PS 9 falls on the staff, mainly Principal D'Avilar. My son attended PS 9 for one and a half long years and not only has he grown to hate school he now also has a low self esteem because of what this principal and her staff put him through. My son is now in another public school, far better and more organized than PS 9, with staff who shows care about each child. My son loves his new school and gets up in the mornings actually looking forward to his school day. PS 9 definitely needs a better principal, one who knows how to properly guide her staff and one who will have patience with the children and know how to interact with each child individually. I hope PS 9 soon receives the reorganization it definitely needs.

My son is a kindergarten student at P.S. 9. I love the environment that he is in. I appears that their moto is creativity. Creativity resonate in there teaching approach. The teachers are extremely pasionate about what they do. The principal Mrs. D'avilar shows great leadership within the school. I look forward to my son's next five years in this school.

Love the school. My son is in K and he has an amazing teacher. He loves school and the work. Had a few problems with the school, but once I brought it to the Principals attention it mostly got fixed. Do feel sometimes there are 'too many cooks'. Alot of people think they know what they are doing or feel they could do a better job than someone else, but I see it slowly getting better. There is alot the school could work, but I feel the Principal is going way beyond what is required of her. She is doing a fantastic job. Parent participation is barely non exsistant, but the parents who do help, really work so so hard. Hopefully other parents will see this and take it upon themselves to start helping. I am happy to say that my daughter will be attending this school this year

My daugther is in one of the Pre K classes this year and is really thriving. The teacher (Ms. Field) is wonderful. I feel extremely confident that she (and the school overall) are working to identify the strengths and needs of each child, and then working to help them grow based on that. They have gone on several field trips taking advantage of the wonderful resources available in the neighborhood, and have done some great curriculum work in prep and in follow up to those trips. My daughter knows a lot more about trees and leaves and fire safety than I do at this point! It is such a pleasure to have her come home and share what she has learned each day! She is also participating in the Kids Orbit after school program, which has also been wonderful in complementing what she is learning in school!

I think the lower grades are great and its not easy to be a teacher in Brooklyn without parent support. I do see a lot of support and I do see a lot of improvement needed in the higher grades - maybe because of lack of parent support! Lead classes have been great and people are putting in effort to maintain a good atmosphere.

PS 9 is a welcoming, warm school, with great teachers and a great principal. My daughter is in pre-k; she goes on 2 field trips a month, performs in school plays, and is, in general, always encouraged to try new things. Her teacher is wonderful, and works with the students to make sure they treat each other well. At the administrative level, the principal welcomes parent involvement, and is working toward a new playground and a new library, as well as updated technology.

I find that it is not the children's fault that the school is going down hill it is lack of help the school receives..by not listening to the children and letting the so called adults handle the situations PS9 does not and can not receive the major funding it will need to function properly. Very disappointed.

My two children, in pre-k and 2nd grade, are thriving at PS9. Our principal is amazing. She is visionary, energetic, open and responsive to concerns, and is successfully connecting our school to community resources in our Prospect Heights neighborhood. She is also always striving for more -- her big dreams include a new playground, a new library and a science lab. But even without these amenities, the PS9 teachers provide excellent instruction to our kids. Our 2006-07 PTA is more active than ever. At the invitation of our PTA president, borough president Marty Markowitz and new state assemblyman Hakeem Jeffries joined us at our first PTA meeting and pledged their support for our school. Our parent coordinator is out of this world - so helpful and eager to make the school year a success for each family. PS9 is a neighborhood gem.

As a second generation alumnus, not a lot has changed. I would like to see more modernized classrooms, gymnasium and auditorium. A much better physical training and health program, is desperately needed. The halls can be better lighted and painted. Access and usage of todays technology can be better utilized and accessible to all. There needs to be more security personnel present, and an updated P.A system, because there is only one-way communication from the main office to the class rooms. All exits should have alarms on the doors. Class sizes need to be reduced from 24-18 students each. The school suffers from inadequate parent communication and involvement. The principal is doing the best job she can under the circumstances, but teachers feel disrespected. P.S. 9 is slated to accommodate grades 7 & 8 during the next couple of years, beginning in Sept. 2004. Overall: Needs Improvements & greater Parent Involvement.
