My child is a 3rd grader and has been a student since pre-k. It's a good neighborhood school with a warm, friendly environment, varied curriculum, and an energetic & diverse community. It has a core group of parents who have been strong advocates for the school. The school's potential - which is that to Park Slope's 321- has not yet been realized in my opinion. The adminstration/teachers have many good qualities but need to do more to meet the demands of a changing neighborhood that has put a greater focus on improving the school's environment & academics. The principal has been too loyal to long-time employees that are not dynamic enough to keep up with the school's growth. The neighborhood - home owners, real estate companies & local businesses - are also somewhat to blame as it has been a bit slow to realize that a thriving PS9 is good for the community. They need to contribute far more to the school than they are currently doing. Too many homeowners of 2-3 MM homes do not send their kids here nor contribute to the school financially. The DOE has not been a friend to PS9 either and certainly has caused the school stress right at the time that it was beginning to grow & excel.

I am very pleased and happy with P.S.9. My children love it. They are very engaged and enjoy going to shcool everday. Only one draw back, I wished the class size was much smaller. Overall though excellent school definitely recommend for your little ones.

My daughter is beginning her second year at PS 9. We have absolutely enjoyed their attention to the whole child. The school is a community where everyone is able to participate and interact with one another. Parents lend their gifts and talents to the success of the school. Teachers learn the kids and positively interact with them regardless of which class or grade they are in. My daughter is in the dual language program and is thriving both academically and bilingually. The open door policy of the principal is because she genuinely cares about everyone in her community. My son went to private school K - 12 and I honestly did not feel the interconnection and thriving community connection that I now feel with PS 9 with any of the schools he attended.

We are extremely happy with PS 9. Our son is in 2nd grade, and absolutely loves it. He has had terrific teachers and is reading above his grade level. The PTO is very active, and the community is invaluable. I do wish the school had more money to help enhance the teacher to student ratio. We need more TAs and substitutes.

PS9 is the epitome of what a neighborhood public school should be. It's a nurturing place that cares about its children and its families and provides a strong foundation to the neighboring community. There are other schools around that may have fancier programs or certainly better funding, but this place is ours -- we love it and it loves us back. I have two boys attending the school and they are happy to get there every single day. The parents and teachers and administration all work together, with egos and other agendas laid aside, to do the best they can do for the children and the strength of the community as a whole.

I am really excited for my child to be attending our fantastic neighborhood school. My son has finished his third week of Kindergarten, and I see tremendous growth in his reading skills. His teacher is fantastic, really great with the kids and very in charge, hard to do with 20 5 year olds. I am very impressed with the Principal and her passion for the kids, and in particular for her passion in having the children learn academically and emotionally. The environment is very positive. There is a tremendous amount of parent involvement in the school, and a large focus on fundraising. Sadly, the librarian that was hired last year was let go due to budget cuts.

My Children love PS 9 and so does my husband and I!. Ms. D'Avilar is great Principal loves children and it shows; she has a wonderful open door policy. As busy as she is she takes the time out listen to each parents concerns and child's. She is fair and always puts the kids' safety first. The parent coordinator is amazing! She is always keeping the school up to date on all school activities and issues and sends out weekly communications via email to all PS 9 parents so that you are in the know. The PTO is also amazing! They are so involved; they work closely with the Principal and staff to make sure all their classroom needs are met. PS 9 focuses on the whole child! I have been a PS 9 parent for 4 years so far, and I have been very pleased with the education children have been receiving. My kids are actually excited to go to school each day. Each class has their own shutterfly website so that even if you weren't able to chaperone a trip, attend a performance or a classroom event/celebration you have a chance to view pictures or videos and feel like you didn't miss a thing.

My son is in Kindergarten at P.S.9, he enjoys going to school each day. My initial concern was his transition from Daycare/Pre-k type of setting in to a larger school. It was easy and pleasant. The staff and parent volunteers have this down to a science. This school is in a great community, and you can clearly see the parents involvement, desire to have a successful school in a nuturing way. One tiny concern is that his classroom is a bit cluttered. i am observing this setting, as I do realize it is the beginning of the school year and the teacher may not have had a chance to set up / store/ move items. Some schools have a "no homework" policy for kindergarten, but PS 9 believes in giving homework. It is beneficial to the kids and the parents. I can see how my son enjoys it, and how much he is learning. For working parents, they have a very decent start time of 8:20 (I know one family that has a start time of 8:40) and offer after-school options, & a variety of enrichment programs.

PS 9 has been amazing for our family for three years and counting! We have two children at the school and because we live in the neighborhood have also been watching the school grow over the last few years. Principal D'Avilar is strong and honest, and has a great vision for the school. Our children's teachers have all been excellent classroom managers while also being warm and personable. But the best part: our kids LOVE going to school and they are consistently engaged and challenged, and learning at exactly the pace I expect them to be. The PTA has a solid core of active parents and is working hard to get more families involved with fundraising, etc., as the school has been transitioning from majority low-income to one that is socio-economically very diverse. There are challenges involved in that but from what I have seen PS 9 addresses those challenges with great community spirit and lots of good energy!

Pre-K and Kindergarten have both been fantastic for our daughter. We have lived across the street from this school for almost 7 years and have enjoyed the buzz of increased parental and community involvement steadily growing. Very happy to be a part of it.

Our school is a wonderful environment for children. Full of energy from both parents and children our school provides the best support system. My two daughters are flourishing at P.S. 9. They are eager to go to school. They love the teachers staff and their classmates. I'm not a fan of the public school system. But if every school operated like P.S. 9. My elder son, probably would've attended public school. Thank you P.S. 9 for all you do for my children education.

parents and PTO are very invovled. We haven't been there long, but so far our experience has been great. Our daughter's teacher is involved and upbeat and responsive to our questions. The after school options are great as well.

My daughter started at PS 9 last year in the dual language K. I consider our continued experience with PS 9 to be awesome. The sense of community among both parents and students is incredible. I am very pleased with the quality of education, as well the fact that I really feel that they tend to the whole child!

P.S. 9 is off to a great start for school year 2013-14! Teachers, staff and school Leadership are in great form and continue to provide excellent education to the children of this diverse neighborhood public school, despite ongoing budget cuts which plague all traditional public schools in NYC and beyond. Just two weeks into the school year, the Parent Teacher Organization raised a large amount of money to support the school by holding an amazing carnival fundraiser in the school playground.

PS9 has an immense, energizing community of involved families and lifelong learners. PS9 was selected as one of 10 schools in the Whole Child Network to engage in a 3-year, comprehensive school improvement process towards better educational outcomes by taking into account students' physical, social and emotional needs as well as the traditional academic and intellectual ones. Enormous creative energy and activism offset budget challenges. And students thrive happily here.

Don't look at the test scores if you have a young child! We've lived in the neighborhood for 12+ years. The neighborhood has undergone a remarkable transformation, especially in the past 5 years. PS9 used to have a bad name. Parents with $$$ put their kids in private school or left. This is a thing of the past. Nowadays, smart people move here for PS9. My only child is in currently in Pre-K at PS9. We love her teacher and are amazed at the quality of education we get, for free. New neighbors own their houses and have a vested interest. PK-2nd grade classes are great right now. As this new batch of kids moves up, those test scores will follow. After-school programs/other enrichment options are affordable, loving and good. The PTA is extremely active. Last year the school unexpectedly lost a lot of money because too few children qualified for school lunch (changing demographic). The PTA sprung into action and, with support of the principal and her team, raised enough money from donations and grants to fill the hole. Criticism: morning announcements are too longwinded. The principal likes her own voice too much. A small price to pay though. Highly recommend this school.

We live in the PS9 zone and have been watching, researching and attending events at this school for several years, as we have two children who are now, or are approaching, school age. We've been so impressed with what we've seen at the school that despite touring multiple so-called "progressive" public schools available in this district, PS9 was easily our first choice. Sadly, the pre-K program is so popular in the community that we couldn't get our child in! But we started kindergarten recently and so far it has been really wonderful - teachers who are warm, rigorous and responsive, dynamic principal, and enthusiastic and involved parents. The kids are wonderful, of course! We are so excited to see how the rest of the year goes!
