Everything is not what it seems, unfortunately politics get in the way. In order to keep the grade you have to ween out the children that are not doing so well, that way the school gets the grade and that equals money. At the end of the day its all about the money....Many unethical practices with this school, how unfortunate.
The Dual Language Program is phenomenal. I can't believe how well my daughter writes in French, all while maintaining a high reading level in English. My Daughter LOVES going to school. She feels a strong bond with the school staff. The Principal has created a strong community within the school. Great after school choices! Parents are involved and feel welcomed. My youngest daughter also loves her patients and caring Pre-K teachers.
The Dual language program is awesome and my daughter can speak, read and write very well in both French and English. The school offers a lot of other programs such as music, arts, drama or chess. We couldn't be happier.
Because they want to educate the kids in the region and they make a difference.
It's a solid public school that honorably serves its neighborhood
It is a school filled with dedicated and smart teachers, wonderful academic support professionals, great principal and vice-principal, involved families, and child-centered in all major decisions. Curriculum is well-rounded and differentiated instruction is meaningfully applied. Art and music programs are exceptional. Physical education is valued and fun. School facilities always well-maintained. After school programs are terrific. A true community school and a happy place.
I have been a part of the PS58 family for 10 years now, this is my youngest daughter's last year at PS58. I will really miss the great teachers, Principal and staff. I have nothing but wonderful things to say about this school and our experiences.
Inventive with curriculum (it spearheaded a dual language immersion program two years ago), and committed to the academic, artistic, althletic as well as emotional growth of its students, Public School 58 is a place where amazing teachers, parents and students become collaborators in education. 58 boasts exemplary teachers, fine facilities including gym, auditoium, new science lab, computer room and llbrary as well as two outdoor play areas and it's across the street from the lovely, green Carroll Park. Arts and music are alive and well here, with vital programs like Studio in the School, in-school programs from the Met and Guggenheim and a rare strings music program for all students in grades 3 through 5. The PTA builds on it all by running wonderful after school classes like robotics, martial arts, knitting, art history, tennis, Japanese drumming, cooking, orchestra, track and field. Many teachers and staff are from Carroll Gardens which only adds to its strong sense of community. Wow. I'm proud to have my kids there.
P.S. 58 is a wonderful warm school where kids and parents feel included in the community. In a tough budget climate the school still offers art, science, music, athletics and lots of amazing afterschool programs for kids. Teachers are wonderful. We feel lucky to be part of such a great school.
The atmosphere at school is very positive. The general curriculum at 58 is state-mandated, but the arts curriculum is strong: a strings program beginning in 2nd grade, drumming workshops, creative movement, visual art. Everyone takes science as a 'special' every week, and some twice a week. There is a French dual-language program for students (selected by lottery) beginning in Kindergarten. A new library should open this year. The playground for older children is still nothing but a vacant lot and the cafeteria seems a bit chaotic. The principal is approachable and involved and the community wide-ranging and enthusiastic. The after school is well-organized and consistent, run through Kids Orbit. A great public park is across the street, which makes for good community building and friendships between the children. We have been very happy at this school.
