P.S. 100 the Coney Island School

I agree with other posts, that biggest problem to the school is its principal Ms Maloney and to lesser extend her right hand Ms. Palicci. Their authoritarian style and vindictive personalities make kids and teachers afraid to say something that might provoke Maloney"s anger. There is a rumor that complaining about her to authorities will not help as she has a supporter (relative or friend) i=very high in administration. A lot of parents chose to move to suburbs only because of the atmosphere in the school. Its funny to see 5 or 6 comments on this board posted on the same day by Maloney and her buddies. School got C rating on school report. Just wondering if DOE sees this messages. My kid will be out of school next year, thanks god.

Administration petrifies their students. Extremely hierarchical structure. The principal has her favorites, all others are mistreated. Some very bad teachers. Not healthy social and emotional environment.

Just like with any school, if the teacher is decent, your child will be more or less happy with the school. Unfortunately, teachers are allowed to raise their voice (more like scream) at kids and there is nothing you can do about it. Many parents have tried reaching out to the school officials without any success. You child can literally hate school after PS100. It is not the same school environment as years ago. The current principal, Ms. Moloney, is extremely rude and will not address any of your concerns unless ofcourse you bring expensive gifts. Even that might not help. If you have issues, save yourself a trip as you will leave the school aggravated with nothing resolved. Just like someone already mentioned, arrival and dismissal times are extremely unorganized and quite honestly, pretty unsafe. Anyone can just walk right up to the school entrance doors where the kids enter the school, causing a lot chaos. The security is non-existant. Some people walk right into the school without the security asking to sign in. I honestly do not understand how this school got an 8/10 ratings. should be a 5 max.

Do not attempt. Poor education, no hands on learning. the principal is horrible. Mediocre teachers. Poor socio-emotional environment. Parental voice is not considered.

I am about to send my youngest to this school. My older son is going to enter 2nd grade. I have to say, I am very impressed about the quality of education here, and the environment of the school. My son is learning so much! Even though the school does not have a g&t program, I feel the quality of instruction is comparable to a gifted program. The only drawback to this school was lack of recess--but that is getting corrected next year as they are building a new playground.

There are numerous problem areas in this school, the main one being the principal-Mrs. Maloney. She is rude, unapproachable and condescending. She influences her staff in a negative way and does not help parents resolve any issues that occur between students and their peers, or students and their teachers. Mrs. Maloney has a negative impact on students' grades, as she coerces teachers to lower the grades of students due to lateness or absence, even though the student has straight A's across the board. The teachers my child had thus far have not provided a strong academic foundation what-so-ever. They do not challenge our children and do not support and are not involved with the parent to help the child educationally in any way. The school's overall environment is not a positive one. My daughter has not had a happy moment since she stepped into the school. All 3 teachers have yelled at her and provide no support, nor do they explain thoroughly what is required with an absence of mentoring. Homework assignments are posted late or at the end of the day. I would strongly recommend parents thinking long and hard before considering P.S. 100-Coney Island. Shame on Maloney and staff.

It would be convinient to have a paid Afterschool program where students could ' ve received a professional homework assistance .

My child has been in this amazing school since pre-k. PS-100 is one of the most strongest schools around. The teachers are very helpfull and are always willing to work with you & your child. Mrs. Moloney is just terrific. Very approachable who care about the welfare for each student and staff member. A great enviornment for any one to be in.

I am a volunteer at PS100 and have been a member the Executive PTA Board and the School Leadership Team for several years. My younger daughter is graduating from PS100 this year and I will be leaving the school with a heavy heart. My older daughter as well as myself attended PS100 and we will always have very fond memories. The Teachers, Staff and all Administrators at the school are there for the children. The education is excellent and on top of the children s progress. More parents need to be involved in there Childs education and extra activities that take place during the schools hours. Mrs. Moloney came to PS100 a few years ago and embraced the building as if it was her own home. Mrs. Moloney also has an open door policy, she will address an issue any parent might have immediately. I wish more parents would come to the meetings and ask any questions or concerns they might have directly to the school instead of assuming the worst. I will miss PS100 very much in June 2012.

My daughter is in 5th grade in P.S. 100 and my son graduated from P.S. 100 years ago and is now in High School. The teachers in this school are beyond excellent. They time with your kids,they nurture and make sure they understand the work. Parent's complain about too much homework and in my opinion it is because it interfere's with their plans. The kids get an appropriate amount of homework, which prepares them for middle school and high school. The Principal and the staff have an open door policy for any parents to discuss anything. I have been an active PTA executive board member and I have seen parents come into the school yelling and acting inappropriate because they don't agree with something. That is not the right way to handle any issues. There is little to no parent involvement but these parents who don't volunteer at the school are the first to criticize and complain. There is gym and there is a dance class so the kids do get recess. I have been in the building almost daily for the last 11 years and believe me the lunch time is anything but silent. Mrs. Moloney and the rest of the administration has made our school a wonderful learning environment for our kids.

When my daughter walked into P.S.100 in September 2009 for her first public school classroom experience as a kindergarten student, I too walked into the school system and offered my time and services. I became a member of the Student Leadership Team (SLT) comprised of smart and passionate parents, teachers and administrators about the school and the pupils learning experience. As part of the Parks and Recreation Committee, we set a goal and got to work quickly to fulfill this goal which was to obtain an outdoor space that was safe for learning and playing based on an on-going request from the parents of P.S. 100. I'm happy to announce that with the help of Principal Moloney, the Borough Commissioner Jeffreys and Councilman Recchia, the pupils of P.S.100 will have a new outdoor facility adjacent to the school in September 2012. The is a true testiment that persistance, collaberation and cooperation does pay off. To all parents that have concerns and suggestions to improve the learning experience of the pupils of P.S.100, "Get involved"!

My son has completed Kindergarten here. He loves this school! He is always so happy to go there in the mornings. And the amount he learned just in Kindergarten is tremendous: he already knows how to read, write, add and subtract. When we started he could barely spell his name! Now for the things I as a parent do not like. I agree with previous reviews: they put a lot of the burden on the parents. Most of the HW I had to re-teach to him. Plus they don't have recess, which is a big minus for me but I hear that has been happening in a lot of public schools. My son's teacher was helpful and caring, but the principal is a bit on the bossy side "I know better than you" kind of attitude. Then again, you cannot cater to everyone's demands. I guess we will see what happens in first grade...

Horrible school. Teachers dont teach, just give a lot of HW, very rude to parents and children. Children dont know how to read by 1st grade, the principle leaves them for 2nd time in the same grade. Teachers dont teach how to read, they expect parents to teach their children. The teacher treats a child nicely when she gets good expensive gifts. Principle screams at children and parents. Never listens even on the meetings, very rude!!!!!!!!!!Talking in commend tone of voice.

Yes, principal is tuff looking and so her stuff, but this what keeps everything in order. It is very hard world out their and kids should learn it from the very beginning. Tuff boss is not necessarily a bad one, and you have to learn how to deal with it. My kid learned how to read, wright, behave and he made some good friends . Projects are fun, teacher is very involved. I like this school.

The Prinicpal is very rude and so is most of her staff in the main office. She has a terrible attitude, does not listen or care about parents and their concerns. She makes this school unwelcoming to parents and visitors.

I have two children currently enrolled in this school and the teachers are just wonderful, but the principal is very uncooperative. She will not listen to parent's concerns and sometimes is very rude to parents. Refuses to understand or listen to parents. I am actually looking forward to changing school due to the lack of cooperation and understanding from this principal.

My Daughter is graduating this year and it has been a great experience for her at PS 100. I attended PS 100 and wanted my daughter to have the same learning experience as I had. My younger daughter will be starting pre-k next year and I look forward to continue my relationships with the staff as well as my involvement with the PTA Executive Board. PS 100 had high standards for our children, which is a good thing as all these qualities will be beneficial in there life. We have welcomed a new principal this year. She has brought warmth to the building and both students and staff feel it. NYC public schools are still the best.
