PS 132 is a great School! Principles don't threaten to call ACS unless they HAVE to. Beth Lubeck has always been fair and kind in my experience. I'm so glad I'm zoned for this school!
they use ACS to intimidate and control parents. Beth LUBECK is a monster. She is super unfriendly, and why she has someone like yvonne Gargiulo as parent co ordinator is beyond me. stifling atmosphere.
I am a parent who is very involved in the community and school. We live 5 blocks from the school and were so thrilled when our daughter got in to Pre-K at 132. She is now in Kindergarten and we are still happy. I was reading some reviews and am really curious about the negative ones. Schools are not perfect but I find this one to be a strong supportive community. My daughter's teachers keep me very involved and whenever I have a question I go right to the office and talk to people. The best thing about this school is the parent involvement. The more involved I get the better it seems. I have not had to directly ask the prinicpal anything but I can say that when my daughter saw her on the street one day she was excited and ran right up to her and they hugged. She seemed quite nice. All in all we really enjoy the school and look forward to having our 2 year old enroll!
My son Loves this school. So do my wife and I! Great mix of children, caring teachers and very involved parents. There's always something going on, always some event or fund raiser. We got in when my son started kindergarten and he went from a shy child in Pre K to a happy little performer. Personally not concerned if he's "gifted and Talented by anyone's standards but ours. And he's awesome! PS 132 till he has to leave! Thanks,
My daughter attended this school for Pre-K and kindergarten. i was so very disappointed with the administration, which ignored or disregarded parents' attempts to collaborate in making their child's education better.
terrible experience with pre-k for our son. horrible communication. nasty teachers. also, from what i understand, this school tiers its classes by ability, starting with the "gifted and talented" class and working its way down. not an appropriate method of teaching or an appropriate way to learn. it's my personal feeling that this school has lasted so long strictly because it is the gifted school for the neighborhood, and is located in an area with an influx of kids. avoid at all costs if you would like your child to attend a school with an administration that listens to the personal concerns of parents, or that teaches in an inspiring manner with well-selected materials and a thoughtful, creative curriculum.
The school's Principal refuses to allow the Gym teacher to teach in the school's gym. She insists that it be taught in the classroom where there is not ample space and the desks, chairs, bookcases, etc are a safety hazard. She is more concerned about being vindictive to the teacher than she is concerned about her students. It is time that parents learn the real truth about this school's administration and start to take actions to change it.
Why is it, that all the negative reviews regarding gym are removed? It is an issue that needs to be addressed. As in most schools, some teachers are wonderful, others aren't. Parent involvement is great. The principal does not have an open door policy and I have yet to make it into her office. On the other hand, security could be tighter. There are other schools in District14 that are more welcoming and feel safer.
Both of my children go to this school, one is 9 and the other 6, and they love it, my husband and I have been happy with their education, and I think the principal is excellent. Granted, it's not perfect, but then again, the dire cuts this school (and all city schools) have had to endure is outrageous. It's a diverse student body and I'm happy my kids are part of it. Of course, I've had conflicts with administration here and there, but my kids have never suffered because of it. The DOE needs to look at its own budget -- ARIS is a costly joke, for example and all of the expensive contractors -- and stop cutting wonderful programs and teachers of this school and others in the city.
The Prinicpal is an egotistical psychopath who closely resembles that of some of the worst tyranical dictators in history. Whether you are a concerned parent or a dedicated teacher, she will not be questioned! It is her way or the highway. Parents who question her sometimes flawed decisions find that she will retaliate against their child. Teachers are threatened and/or removed. This is not strong leadership, it is a dictatorship to the most insane degree!!
My sister goes to this school. She has a horrible teacher (I am not going to name names) who yells all the time, picks favorites and doesn't have a good method for teaching. You think I'm being too harsh about just one detail? Well, I went to this school too, and as for the physical education program? The teacher is neurotic. He devoted an entire class period to WATCHING A VIDEO ABOUT A TEST EVERYONE WILL HAVE TO TAKE NEXT YEAR. Also, when I went there, he made us learn the chicken dance every year for SEVEN YEARS. Also, lunch time is fifteen minutes long. FIFTEEN MINUTES LONG. The rest of the FIFTY MINUTE LONG lunch period is devoted to recess and games in the cafeteria, when it is strictly forbidden to eat lunch. I have many more complaints, but I can't fit them all here.
would like to say PS.132 has come a long way. I myself attended and can remember the teachers that have influenced me. My Art, music and gym teachers played a huge roll in my life. not only were they great teachers who cared but loved what they did. P.S 132 being a Multi Culture school provides classrooms that kids can learn and grow from. Flag Day was my favorite pass time at P.S 132, Flag Day brought everyone together to better our health, I have seen the changes P.S 132 has made over the years and the school has grown. The board of Education should grant more money to aid in the schools great history.
Lovely teachers, strong principal, and amazing parent body. Parents are very involved and there are many opportunities for parental involvement. At the moment, the kids have yoga and drama via TADA. However, there is quite a lot of homework in the upper grades. Weekly math, writing, and spelling assignments begin in first grade. Be aware that the school operates on a tracking system. Plus the building is maxed out, we lost the library last year to create more classroom space. Luckily the Settlement House down the street has stepped up (with the help of community fundraising) to renovate their gym to provide for much needed space. There is a also a wonderful new music teacher, and we even have 'senior' and 'junior' bands, an amazing feat for an elementary school.
School spirit and communication are at top level. There is something exciting going on every week. Quality teaching, environmentaly and technologicaly oriented.
My daughter has yet to attend Pre K, but this is my school of choice in the neighborhood. Our neighborhood is a newly gentrifying neighborhood and it seems this is the only public school in the neighborhood that is trying to change with the times. They have play groups, a website and all around they are just great!
My daughter, who is in prek., had a little difficulty wanting to attend school towards the end. The family counselor, Ms. Janet and the teacher, Ms. Jensen, went beyond what was expected of them to help my daughter. I am greatly obliged and appreciative.
All we can say is WE LOVE IT! Our son is in Pre-K, Mrs. Clarke's class. An incredible experience in our local public school. It is about time something great is happening in education in Williamsburg!
My daughter goes to PS 132 for Pre-K and she loves it. I find the administration to be warm, loving and supportive. They are an inexhaustible group who are open minded and listen to the needs of both the children and parents. They invite parents to participate in activities in the classroom and create fun and exciting out of school time events.
I am thrilled with the education my daughter is receiving at PS 132. The teachers are caring and in tune to their students needs. The administration is opened to suggestions. Keep up the great work!
