My daughter is in the 2 nd grade now at this school. She started with the gifted and talented program in kindergarten. I was upset that the class size increase in the 2nd grade and there have been some shifts. The teachers I have worked with are great. Phone, email communication...I love it! The principal is also awesome. Never had any issues with the school thus far.
This school has come a long way from the last Principal the new Principal has done an excellent job in turning it around ...
The school has a new Principle and he is wonderful. I want to see if he can turn this school around, I hope so because the middle school was terrible HORRIBLE last year. The new principal has really changed things but iit is not enough yet. Fairness, he's only been there for 3 months. If you have a bright middle schooler, don't send them here because the other students will pull your child down. Good teachers focus on the ones that need help but at this critical stage, ALL of the children need help.
My son is in Kindegarten at PS 161. From Day 1, I did not like the atmosphere. Children were running around the cafeteria with no supervision, (teachers were just standing there doing nothing), the floors were wet with milk spills (no one came to clean them up). The so-called helpers were rude and disrespectful, they did not show any regard to my feelings, I am a first time mother, this is my first experience with the public school system as a mother. I attended public school and my has it changed. They treat parents like the enemy. Fortunately, I see signs of learning from my son. He is doing well. I know that is important, but when I can, I will remove him from this school to find one with more professionalism and respect.
Both of my children attend this school. Although they are doing well w/their school and homework this school offers no conflict resolution, regular gym activities, art, or anything outside of school work. My daughters teacher this year is very immature and doesn t show the level of care that the Stellar program should offer. The amount of staff that care decreases year after year (my children have been in the school since k-3/4 grade). The Crown school indeed reaps all the benefits given to the school. Ever since it was added attention given to the elementary part of the school has dramatically decreased. It seems like the entire extra curriculum and activities are given to the JHS instead of nurturing the younger children. Hopefully I am able to get my kids in a Charter school that can nurture and enhance their learning instead of limiting them.
The first grade should be a memorable for all six-year-olds. My daughter has had an unforgettable experience since attending The Crown School. There is a tremendous cultural bias at at the school. There should be cultural training classes for some of the teachers. My daughter's teacher is culture shocked. I don't know how they teach in the Carribean, but public school should not be military school. Seriously considering changing schools.
My child has attended PS 161. This school has taken a serious nosedive in the past 3 years and I am thankful that this will be our last year in attendance. School focus- citywide test scores. Students are plagued with testing material. Bulling is a major problem and principal's attitude towards students as well as staff is distressing. Assistant principal tries hard and the few great teacher that have not yet run for the hills are few and far between. Sad
As the graduating class of 2006, I feel that P.S 161/ Crown School is a terrible school due to the fact that the students pay no attention and are disruptful in class. The quality of the teachers is ok but the discipline factor does take from the learning material. I also feel that the middle school should not be joined with the elementary school as the older kids do not provide a sense of responsibility for the younger ones. You can tell that the school was built for younger kids as many of the facilities are too small for the middle school children. All in all, P.S 161/ The Crown School is a very poor school that continues to spiral downwards each and every single year.
This school focuses more on the low achievers than on the high ones. It is not fair to focus all attention to the bottom of the class and give no recognition to the top half. If you have an A student then do not send here. Classes are overcrowded. Mr. Kurtz gave the school its great name, once he left the school just is going down. So sad but true.
It's a GREAT school! Principal And teachers work hard to maintain the high standard that this school is known for. Let's pull together as parents (our children's advocates)and join the team, for greater success for our children.
My sister attended P.S. 161. It is better than a lot of the other public schools in Brooklyn.
The principal focuses on 'Dress for succes' over learning. It is an overcrowded school.
This school is not what it use to be. Lost a lot of great teachers during this 'restructuring' and curriculum overhaul. Music, art,and pe offered is very limited. Not what I would call an accelerated curriculum. Parent involvement is not at an acceptable level. Hard to meet with Principal. Great Assistant principals. School needs to do re-evaluate before it loses it good standings.
wel i think parents should do things thats students enter.besides sport.like parent should volenteer to help out at the shcool.I went there four like 4-5 in half years. i should no what to do.unlike some parents who had there child in that shcool longer doesnt mean any thing.half the students parent should no how to do things.butsome of the students went to school ther but what i have to say is thst i no how parents are.
There are to many students to not have school safety outdoors during the mornings & dismissals. The school has become overcrowded and it is losing its edge but is still better than most.
This school is not what it use to be. Ms. Barrett is loosing control and respect from the students, teachers and parents. She does not really listen to the great staff and parents that have put their heart and soul into making this school so successful. We are loosing many exceptional teachers. The students are not disciplined or motivated anymore especially in the 'Crown School'. A successful house system was destroyed. However, this school can become a 'jewel' once again with the continuing success of Gloria Arthur of the PTA and Ms. Bent, Ms. Norfleet, Ms. B.Adler, Ms. Schwartz and Ms. Pooser.
I think that P.S.161 is one of the very best schools there are in Brooklyn. I loved it. Mr. Kurz did a good job and Ms. Barrrett is on her way. She needs a little more time to adjust, but in time she'll have complete control. The dance program is exceptional. All ages are open to learning traditional West African dance with an exceptional teacher. The test scores are above average, and the children are fairly well behaved. Its good that the teachers are into the students personal lives because that way they can help the children to learn better and they'll know the childrens situations.
I find that teachers do not try to hear the parents out as well as the students they show no communication skills there are no activities for the kids to do while in gym and the education performance that they teach is back. I have 3 kids who attend there during my 1st child who graduate she did good but ever since the change the principal has decrease. Remember Mr. Kurtz he had every one on there toes he was at the corner store chasing them kid out of the store rain snow or shine. Mr. Kurtz was there for a principal he also new every child name.
I am the parent of two students (one recently graduated and one in the elementary section of the school) Ps 161 is work in progress. It is not the best possible school, however it has seen great success compared to others in similar geographical areas. The teachers need sensitivity training to deal respectfully with the students. Administration needs to admit that the school is not perfect. They need to accept critism and focus on strengthening communication with parents.
