My daughter is finishing her first year at PS 185 and we have been incredibly impressed. The teachers are dedicated and skilled and the school leadership (both principal and PTO) is strong. This school approaches education in a refreshingly traditional manner with a focus on how students think and solve problems rather than technology. I look forward to next year when the upper playground is back!
I went to this school from Kindgergarten through 5th as part of the Delta program, I have very nice memories of it, from reading Harry Potter and the Chronicles of Narnia with Miss Amendolia to bowling on the roof garden and a huge graduation party. No complaints whatsoever, it was such a wonderful environment for kids, I'd do it all over again if I could! I love this school.
PS 185 is a wonderful school. MY 4 children attend and our oldest is graduating this year. We have been very happy with the administration and the teachers. I do wish the enrichment programs were available to more students. Bring in instruments for 3 - 5th grade, offer Chorus to more students. Get teh younger classes involved as well, let the children try new things and have a talent show, a piano recital, an intstrument recital. Children need to express themselves and have a creative outlet.
The student- teacher ratio is high which is not helpful. 24 kids for one teacher is a lot specially in kindergarden. I do not know how the administration is using the money to improve the quality of the school but that student- ratio is not good for offering more individiual attention to the kids. The lunch room is not well supervised neither clean. Besides the school is under construction which inside is a mess and very hard to listen to the class. The construction work it seems to last forever who knows when is going to be finished.
the classes are over-crowed and the lunchroom is a mess. the teachers need to stop yelling and behave in a professional manner.
My two sons are studrnt of this school,The principle,Class teacher and parent teacher co ordinator are very much helpful,
My son just finished up second grade at PS 185 and it has been a great experience. We heard good things about the school, but were unable take a tour. They only have a tour once a year, and if you miss it, they are not very forthcoming with information. Given this cold shoulder we were skeptical of the school, but gave it a try based on the recommendations of friends with kids in the school. We are glad we did, the school has been great. My son had 24 children in his class and two teachers. The second teacher helps kids who fall behind, but is also available to help the high achievers. It is also a true neighborhood school, with parents walking their kids to school every day, and good parental involvement. The teachers were also very engaged, and were happy to discuss our son's progress.
Mr. Linas is a gem principal very involved and, absolutely cares about the students. There are a few teachers I think they would be better off without but as long as the principal is an advocate for the kids that is what matters. The school is definitely homey and helpful.
I am a grandparent and the first time I went to the school to pick up my grandson I was met by the Principal. He introduced himself and very politely ask who I was, to my surprise he knew I was on the list to pick up my grandson. This really impressed me to see this person out with the students. I live in Arkansas and if you see the principal here it is a miracle. Again, thanks for caring for the students safety.
We are a transfer family from what we thought was a VERY good public school in Manhattan. PS 185 has room for improvement but so far we are delighted and happy with what we've seen so far. It is overcrowded but not as much as our prior school where they had to take the library away and use it as a classroom! All in all I give it 4 stars.
I love this school....it's a small public school that feels like a home.
I too am disappointed with the Delta program, I expectecd more by way of creative thinking, than by just dumping alot of, what I would describe as meaning less homework. The school itself appears to be in a somewhat time warp as well... there is a very minimul music, and art program, no after school programs offered to the whole population, and the school puts way too much emphasis on disciplinary behavior, instead of individual growth. The classes are also over crowded, which would explain the need to constantly inforce discipline.
It's an awesome school. I graduated this year and it's sad. The teachers are nice and the principal is very active. Overall this school is great.
I'm a little bit disappointed in the school Delta program. It is not so advanced as we expected, just a lot of a homework. The ratio of classwork to homework is about 30:70. The teachers don't explain too much and just relay on extra home activity. Also an IQ level of students is very different. I have no an idea how some of them were placed to this must to be advanced class. So overall this school is above an Brooklyn average school. But we are no so impressed it is below of our expectations.
P.S. 185 is a very good public school. The principal is a strong leader and aware of what is happening in the school. He is a problem solver and open to discussing issues with parents. So far, my child has had amazing classroom teachers who are experienced and knowledgeable. There is certainly and obviously a wide range when it comes to teacher education, dedication and ability. Parents know which teachers are passionate. Some of the specialist need new inspiration. All of the children need access to instruments! It would be wonderful if the PTA had more volunteers. I have heard not every parent feels welcome. The meetings are at inconvenient times for many. Regardless, more parents need to get involved. Plus, an afterschool program (for all the children)on the premises is much needed. Overall, I am happy with my child's educational experiences at 185. If it should change...
This is a great school! I dare to say it is better than the most of private schools. The teachers are dedicated and professional. Its Delta program is one of the best in the district.
Very good school with good dedicated teachers. Very happy to send my child here. Safe Bay Ridge location. Regualar out door activities.
P.S. 104 - Teachers are both professional, qualified, and easy to approach and speak with. Educational materials and programs are great overall.
This is a wonderful nurturing enviornment for the children. Kids here get an excellent education wether they are in Delta or not. There is true concern for all the children from most of the teachers. Parents are welcome in the classrooms and are especially encouraged to come in while the children are in the younger 3 grades. Lunch Aides are, for the most part, as they are in most other school. PTA needs to reach out to it's community and make all welcome. New principal is well liked and tries hard. He really seems to have a very soft spot for the younger grades. Any child in this school is lucky.
