This school is absolutely horrible!!!!! My son is in first grade and he is not being challenged. From looking at his homework which is not age or grade appropriate to his class work which seems like his teacher just allows him to "work" freely without any instruction, guidance or follow-up. One several occasions my son has told me he didn't get a chance to eat lunch because of being rushed and waiting on line and the dismissal procedure or lack there of is totally chaotic. They dismiss children on to the street into a crowd of adults. The children are running in the street and there is a lack of effective supervision. No one can give you a direct and correct answer This school lacks organization and structure and educational standards.
My daughters in grade 3 and 4 currently attend this school. I loved the school. The principal is very outgoing and lets you know in advance what her expectation is. She has a No nonsense policy. My kids teachers are excellent.
Moving to NYC from NC was a big issue for me and my girl s, however after starting at PS189, I am truly impressed with the standard. The Principal take on though love is excellent! Kids today need that sturdy hand of guidance both at home and at school. My girls love their new school, and I am loving the daily homework and reading logs. I think that the majority of the students (80%) are on the right path except for a few rowdy students. The teachers that I have had the pleasure to know are truly invested in the kids and their performance.
The Center Bilingue, PS 189 was New York City first charter school. It covers kindergarten through 8th grade. Academic standards are high even for children whose primary language is not english as they are immersed in a language class with peers who are bilingual; however their work plan has the option of studies in spanish/french until they are english proficient. This does not pre-clude them from the high academic standards, as each have a language dictionary that is expected be accessed when needed. Students also study latin, in addition to spanish or french. The school offers regents exam in earth science, algebra, and french/spanish. What impresses me most is the level of expectations and the loving support they receive along with a boot camp mentality (loving) of the principal. There's a Monday morning pep talk session with her. There's after school/ET/Saturday Academy for extra help; and a number of stuents show up. The students graduate to the best high schools, including mine to Stuyvesant High School. It was the language arts/cultural experiences that impressed mine the most; as she did AP French and German in high school as a follow-up and did a study abroad stint at the Sorbonne in political/social sciences. Needless to say the love for international cultures remains to date with her as she travels extensively. I credit PS 189 with instilling dedication and academic curiosity and excellence in her. Kudos to that school. PS, they still rate as one of New York city's top school. I hope they win. They sure could use the additional funds. science
I go to this school it is a great place. The principle is very strict but it is for a good reason.I love my school no one can change that.
i really love this school. this is my son his second year in this school. my son is in the 3rd grade , the gifted and talented program and he is really challenged in this school. Ms. Faustin is doing an excellent job, there is no fighting or noone being bullied compared to the other school. i hope that the principal keeps up the good work and what i like about the principal is that she is always involve with everything in the school. If there is parent teacher night , she is there greeting parents. I would not change this school for none other
Well im a parent who child attends this school. Hes been there for three years. And i tried to see if it was my child or the school. There is a particular teacher there that i must say really doesnt show much concern for my sons education. This will be my sons last year at this school, i will rather my child in a private school, whether they learn the same material or not, i rather know, that i tried another outlet in making sure my son gets the best education out there. When he gets in trouble its always him, the asst. Principal down plays other students behavior as if its cute, but when my son gets in trouble along with others its 'always him' and im referring to other students who are stamped with 'promotion in doubt'.
This is a really good school please take your child to this wonderful educational oasis.
i am a student of ps 189 the students try their best in my school everyone is a winner and ms. faustin the principal of ps 189 monitors the uniform and more, your uniform must be complete, like my teacher always says if you pay attention 50% of the time you only get 50% of the work so if you pay attention all the time then you will get all of the school. i am a highly motivated studewnt and i always make parents proud and i waill stay that way because i payed attention all of the time so i got all ofthe work. i will like to thank ms faustin for all she hasdone and i would like to say if you fail,m the teacher or someone else did not fail you, you failed yourself. Thank You
I have two children who has been attending this school since 1st grade they are now in 4th and 7th grade. I am satisfy with the school and is proud of the their principal ms. Faustin and all that she is doing to keep her school on track. I am very thankful for the satuarday school that they have going on to help our children with any extra help that they made need. Please do not get rid of the satuarday programs.
This is my son's first year in this school and I was a little concerned about him going from a small private setting to a big public school. I am happy the class size is still small and my son's teacher is EXCELLENT. I receive reports from the teacher when he is good and bad and that keeps him on track. I am thankful there is a decent school in the neighborhood. My only concern is the lack of extracurricular activity, but they are working at it.
This school received an A on its city progress report, but I do not see the reality of it in my classroom. The administration is quite disjointed, and so it is left up to the teachers to make the classrooms successful and welcoming.
This school has improved tremendously over the past two - three years. Because of its diverse background, this school offers both academic and extra cirriculum activities to these students. Students are monitored as soon as they enter the school until they leave. This makes parents feel much safer because of the location of the school. Also the prinicpal and staff ensures that students adhere to uniform and discourages them from altering.
Quality of Academics programs is abouts 30% ,availability of the arts is 10% and sports is 0%.Parent involvement is high.
