I'm a parent of an Cunningham student and I would have to say that it was a great school. The only thing I'm greatly disappointed in is the change in system which is ridiculous. CIG/Vanguard and the additional programs no longer exists for 8th graders. Apparently it's called the "High school system", but nothing changes but the students in each class. I find it so strange how students that were originally in General or Cyber went 2-3 levels up.The reasons that these programs existed was to help all students learn what was beneficial to them, but some ridiculous idea was brought up to change it entirely. My children and their friends tell me constantly about the kids that were originally not in CIG/Vanguard constantly complaining and cheating. The principal of this school in my opinion needs to get a grip and learn some common sense. Before this system was established this year, if a program was not challenging a student then only would that student change programs & classes. But going up 2-3 programs up is really surprising. The programs now are called " Advanced, Honors, General." BUT INSTEAD OF 4 ADVANCED LIKE ORIGINALLY 4 CIG CLASSES there's 8 advanced classes. You would think that it's basically CIG&VANGUARD combined however its not. Children of different capabilities are placed in this program. There's kids from cig, vanguard, cyber and general in this program. CIG is the top program for a reason. They don't learn regular 8th grade math. They learn Algebra 1 & Earth Science which is taught at 9th grade. SO WHY ARE CYBER AND GENERAL KIDS EXPERIENCING THIS?? 6th graders enter this school by taking the OLSAT and that score is what should determine what program you should be for the next 3 years unless you change the way you think and commit to school work. This is how the SHSAT works also! I'm very dissatisfied.

The three years my son has spent at Cunningham were so great to him. Cunningham really brought out his personality. I remember in the beginning of the 6th grade my son had a problem, he thought he couldn't really fit in with the type of environment that Cunningham had. It was a change. But by meeting new types of people and living around this environment, made him cherish the years he had spent there. The teachers were so cooperative. It wasn't hard for him to make friends either. The sports programs are also varied. That was a big part for his time there as well. It brought out his competitiveness. Overall if you are looking for a school that has teachers who listen, a nice environment, and a comfortable learning area, this is definitely the school for your child.

This school is mediocre at best. My daughter is in CIG (Center for Intellectually Gifted). She is not being challenged and is capable of much more!

This school is great for 8th graders. They have a after school high school preparation class that will help them to prepare for High School Entrance Exams. The school is very up to date with technology as well. A plus in a modern day society where you have to be experienced in technology.

I go to this school and it is a really good school. Sure, it's a challenging school but it is awesome. All of the teachers know what their doing and the 8th graders are not bad, maybe a bit annoying, but not very bad. The principal is also really strong and has great leadership. I have challenging teachers, but they explain really well with what they are talking about. Also, there are so many after school programs you could go to.

Great School. So many excellent teachers. One social studies teacher, Ms Frederick is the strictest and *smartest* teacher my son has ever had, she gets him, it was an authentically challenging class for my gifted child.

Full disclosure: I am not a parent. I am a family friend, taxpayer, and wife of a 25-year veteran DOE educator/administrator, and I am concerned about the deteriorating quality of our schools. This school employs and supports incompetent, inappropriate teachers who are clearly disillusioned with their profession; not all, but enough of them to discourage a student assessed (previously and currently) as gifted, perceptive, respectful, helpful, diligent, and eager to learn. Student has been repeatedly castigated, academically and personally, for asking basic classroom questions - circumstances confirmed by the teachers themselves. Parental involvement to achieve resolution is actively discouraged by administrators, as well as teachers. Shameful.

ABOUT 12:30 PM MY SON AND BUNCH OF OTHER STUDENTS WAS TAKING OUT FROM THE CLASSROOMS AND EACH OF THEM RECEIVED A LETTER STATING THAT THEY ALL GOT DISMISSED AND TRANSFERRED TO THE OTHER SCHOOL, WHICH IN MY CASE IS LOCATED MORE THAN 4 MILES AWAY, WHERE THIS IS MY DISTRICT ZONE SCHOOL WHICH IS ACROSS THE STREET. WHEN I ENROLLED MY SON TO START THE SCHOOL I AS A PARENT WAS NEVER NOTIFIED ABOUT ANY CHANGES OR EVEN A POSSIBILITY TO CHANGE SCHOOL FOR MY 12 YEARS OLD SON IN THE MIDDLE OF THE SCHOOL YEAR(SEE THE LETTER THAT WILL BE FAXED TO YOU). THE SCHOOL PRINCIPLE AND DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION SHOULD MAKE ALL THE CHANGES PRIOR OF THE AMBITIONS OF THE KIDS. THAT'S WHY THE SCHOOL STAFF START THEY WORK ONE MONTH EARLY PRIOR OF THE KIDS STARTING THE SCHOOL. I THINK THAT THE SCHOOL MUST DISCUSS ANY CHANGES

This is a wonderful school and a very nurturing academic environment. The principal is terrific and the staff are courteous and helpful. The parent/teacher coordinator at the school is a particularly valuable asset and source of information and assistance.

This school is a very good school. It is because it is up to date on what is happening. The staff members are very involved on what the students are doing. The school also offers many after school programs for the students to participate in and they also welcome the new sixth graders very nicely. They make them feel comfortable. All the staff also encourages the students to strive for what they want and to always try their best.

Cunningham is a great school. I am currently a cig 8th grade CIG (center for intellectually gifter) student. Cunningham has great classes the teachers are fun, loving and great TEACHERS! This school offers Johns Hopkins math in 6th 7th and 8th grades for the CIG students. in 7th grade CIG students get to take a biology/living environment REGENTS 9th grade leval giving them a high school science credit. students who are in CIG in 7th and 8th grades are able to take algebra and geometry regents. depending on their pace( CIG math program is self paced math the student is challenged to teach him/hersef. Although the math teacher at lest 3 times a week gives regular math lessons. IN THE END GREAT SCHOOL definately you should attend it if you have the oppertunity

A great school, where the Principal and its teachers are focused on fostering a challenging educational environment that helps all students (not just CIG, Vanguard and Cyber Academy) to continue to grow and achieve their maximum potential. The parent coord., PA are aligned with SLT to support events that increase parent involvement in the student's education.

My daughter is a CIG student at Cunningham and both she and I are very happy with the sxhool. The teachers are wonderful. They really respect the students and are very patient with them. I also like the fact that not only is the student body ethnically diverse but they generally get along with each other. They also have great after school clubs like Newspaper, Arts and Mosaic, Drama, Dance, animation, etc.

I love this school. Graduated in 2007 in the advance classes. Going to school I was given many advantages so that when I came to high school it was so much easier for me to get good grades and pass all of my classes.

my child attened this school for 3 years. i really regret the decision. the building is falling apart. filthy lunchroom. the school is 600 kids over its limit. this is the reason kids get lost in the system. staff is busy dealing with overcrowded, disruptive minority while the majority of kids get hereded around like cattle.

The thing I like most about this school is that they have a new wing which keeps the 6th graders separated from the 7th and 8th graders for the most part. The teachers are wonderful and keep in touch with the parents through e-mail, notes, or phone calls. I requested something specific to be done for my son (a problem area) and they all came through to help him out with no questions asked.

The teachers are doing a great job; I don't see why so many people complain. If the children want to try to learn, they will. Students have to commit. All I see that really causes a problem is that there really isn't any space, high congestion us always an issue for the kids.

My daughter is currently in the 6th grade Cig program. I regretted that I had sent her to this school. This school is overcrowded and I don't like their programs at all. My daughter lost her inspiration. The only thing I like the best is the parent coordinator. She's doing a good job to keep me informed on all upcoming events in Cunningham. Other than that, I have nothing good to say about this school.

I am graduating Cunningham this year and I am glad to say that I had a great experience there. I learned a lot in the past three years and there are a very wide variety of classes. The school is really diverse so it's pretty easy to make friends. I feel really safe in the school. Most of the teachers are good and helpful. I am in the honors program and it is great. I am not pushed to hard, and I can succeed at my own pace. I'll miss you Cunningham!

Since my son has started 6th grade in [this] school he does nothing but talk about the day he has had. Which is all good. I just hope that for the next two years my son will continue to talk to me about the great days he's having at Cunningham. Teachers keep up the great work.

I am very impressed with IS 234. My son started there at the beginning of the year in sixth grade. Since then I have been blessed with a number of incredible teachers who keep me involved in the status and quality of my sons work. They are the first to contact me when they see a change or think that we could try something different to get better results. The teaching staff goes out of there way to make sure every students time at IS 234 is used to the fullest. I am so very glad that my son is enrolled at IS 234.
