Want to improve this school’s profile? You can!

All schools on GreatSchools begin with BASIC completeness, which includes important information like contact details and test scores. It’s up to the school community to take the next steps. As a parent or community member, you can share what you know with other families by writing a review or answering a few questions about what the school offers. As a school leader, you can upload photos, describe school programs, and more with an Official school profile.

The completeness meter moves to INTERMEDIATE, then ADVANCED, and finally HONOR ROLL as you complete the following: 10 or more reviews, at least 1 photo, and 9 program questions parents find helpful.

Excellent faculty, PTA community, and principal! Our pre-k director recommended PS261 to us over our G&T and success charter school choices. We could not be happier here. We had an excellent Kindergarten teacher who taught my daughter to love reading and math. Since Kindergarten my daughter has also been learning Arabic and comes home with friends singing songs in Arabic. She is now in the first grade and loves it! The school is such a diverse beautiful place! Thanks to Principal Mills, the faculty and PTA at PS 261 for all their hard work in creating such a friendly and engaging learning environment for our children.

P.S. 261 is a very parent friendly school. My son has been in other public schools that forces you to drop the children off at the front door and leave, but with P.S.261 they allow you to sit and have breakfast with your child until 10 mins before the first bell. The students are nice, the staff is nice. I am si excited to be part of P.S.261's community. My son is in the second grade and he loves it. The class he's in, he is pushed to do his best. The community is amazing as well. The parent board is great. The principal walked me and my son to his class the first day he started and she is very hands on. The parent coordinator knows me by name. I love it! If you are thinking about putting your child here, STOP THINKING AND DO IT!!! You'll be happy you did. :)

Both of my daughters attended 261 and enjoyed it tremendously. One of them transferred from a Brooklyn private school and the other from a Caribbean country. Needless to say it could have not gone well at all! The teachers were nurturing and open to discussion and always responded to emails and requests for a visit. The curriculum was well paced and organized and learning occurred in a healthy environment. Both have since gone on to middle schools and are doing well. I am hoping to get my K and 1st grader daughters in this fall. I am saddened to hear that families outside of the district are now unable to get in. I'm still going to try! Anyone know is Ms. Zip MIlls is still the principal?

Great administration, good parent involvement, excellent teachers and a diverse student body all add up to a wonderful learning environment for our children, who we feel are getting a terrific education. We never would have imagined we could offer them so much at a public school and we will be sorry to leave the school behind when our kids graduate.

Our family has been at PS 261 for 6 years. We now have a 3rd grader at PS 261 and our older daughter just graduated from 5th grade. The Principal, Zip Mills, is a wonderful leader and has created a fabulous community to nurture and teach children. My middle-schooler is doing extremely well based upon the foundation she received at PS 261.

All 3 of my children have attended PS261, the last 2 graduating June 2010. This is a wonderfully diverse school whose teachers are not only dedicated to students' immediate educational and emotional needs, but also to the preparedness of their students in furtherance of their lives both in and out of the school environment. The PTA is also outstanding. PS261's administration welcomes parent involvement and cooperation; plus, the PTA maintains an afterschool that can't be beat. Overall, PS261 feels like family and will be truly missed.

We have two boys currently enrolled in P.S. 261. It truly is a diverse nurturing environment, where your child is sure to receive a wonderful education. We have loved every teacher we have had thus far from Pre-K to 3rd (oldest only in third). The Principal is truly a caring and AMAZING individual, and also a huge Giants fan. How can you go wrong with that combination? :)

It's incredibly diverse and everybody gets along well and learns from one another. The teachers and administrators work so hard to welcome every single kid. Along with stellar academic skills, my daughters have learned conflict resolution, compassion, and community-mindedness - and they just have a great time there.

The Teachers and staff at PS 261 are very warm, dedicated and make learning fun. My son is part of the Math Team, School Band and is now going to join Book Talk. From the first day of school my children look have looked forward to going to school because they don't want to miss anything. That in itself makes PS 261 a great school.

PS 261 is a amazing school that is not only racially diverse but economically as well. We have a very active parent body that is ever present and ever passionate about fighting for great education for their kids and their kids are getting it! Wonderful teachers vibrant and committed to challenging the kids and not just teaching them to test well.

I was a student at P.S. 261 for four years and I enjoyed every one of them. The teachers are enjoyable, knowledgeable and make learning as fun as it can get. The science teacher Carmello 'The Science Fellow' Piazza is particularly fun and hands-on. He has numerous classroom animals and scientific toys that make yo forget that you are learning. The school also has an excellent after-school program. The classroom environment is relaxed and unique, the students call teachers by name. Mind you though students are still disciplined and recieve fair punishment. From my standpoint (and I was far from a perfect student) the staff was unbiased when students were given repercussions. All in all P.S. 261 is as good a NYC public school as possible.

My daughter is entering the second grade at PS 261 and she has had a terrific experience so far. Both her teachers - kindergarten and first grade - were top rate - smart, energetic, creative, and totally dedicated to the children and their development. The student body reflects the diversity of Brooklyn in the best way. way. It's a true cultural melting pot and I am thrilled my daughter is exposed to so much

It's our 3rd year at PS261 and we can't be happier. As an inter-racial/cultural family we really appreciate the diverse community this school offers - kids sing 'Happy Birthday' song in 6 different languages at birthday parties! This is exactly what we wanted from a NYC school. I strongly agree with the other commentator... can't believe it's free!

We started our daughter at PS261 in the second grade this past fall. She is happy, adjusted and most importantly learning. The 2nd grade program is fabulous with the kids putting together their own post office that they run for a week throughout the school! Otherwise, the school is friendly, very focused on the community and highly invested in the academic and social success of the children. It is also a dynamic environment with a very active PTA a proactive SLT and terrific school leadership. We couldn't be happier.

My daughter is finishing first grade at PS 261 and she has had an exceptionally good experience. Her teachers are fabulous -- they have inspired learning and creativity while also teaching basic skills. She is immersed in the poetry unit at the moment and writing poems regularly. She also adores math and science -- PS 261 is uniquely lucky to have Carmelo the Science Fellow as our regular science teacher. We have also just completed a unit of dance and music taught by performing artists in New York (who are also PS 261 parents). It was a fantastic program and an indication of the level of both support for the arts and parental involvement in the school.

This is our daughter's first year at P.S. 261 and we're totally impressed. The teachers are great, led by an awesome principal (Principal Mills). There's a great balance between academics and the arts and the diversity of the school is a great attribute. One on one evaluations are administered to each student throughout the year to determine their growth and pinpoint their strengths and weakenesses. Backed by a strong, dedicated PTA they keep parents well informed and welcome new ideas and suggesions. The after school program (operated by the Dodge Virtual Y)provides a wide range of activities to choose from and rotates the schedule periodically so your child can try new things. The staff provides a family oriented environment and my daughter couldn't be happier. She attended private school from the age of 2 and never have we received the level of success than that of P.S. 261.

This is a great school but as with every school, there are some teachers that are a better match for some students than others. Carmello is amazing for science; there is art and music and the after school program is really engaging for the children. The principal is very caring and accommodating to the children's needs. I highly recommend PS 261.

Thia has been a great school in the past with wonderful teachers, but it's beginning to become a classic over-principaled, under-principled school. Family involvement is being reduced with each day, and city/national requirements are being used as excuses for futhering the Principal's agenda (Judi Aronson had been one of the best ). Children still receive a good education from mostly tremendous teachers but it is unclear what the future brings. This is particularly a concern with the possible addition of a Middle School further diluting the school's efforts and seemingly in place more to build Ms. Aronson's power than for the excuse to retain school status. Many efforts are being put forward under the guise of making 261 for the whole community, but clearly that 'whole community' is any minority with money. Great before, good now, future?? probably ok with staff.
