This school is the best school ever! The parties are amazing and the teachers are really amazing! It's also a great place to make new friends! I am currently going into 7th grade and I love this school.

This is not a recommended school. I mean it has improved over the years but if your child is an A-B honor student, grades will be dropped.Trust me. ~ Student 2011-2013

This school has improved so much in the past year. All of the staff members are willing to stay after school and give up their lunch and free periods to help their students succeed. They spend their own money buying supplies such as pencils and paper, even though the students are supposed to come prepared already. The only problem is that the students are not willing to come after school or during the day to catch up on their work. Very few parents make the effort to come up to the school to check on their child's progress. Need to improve on parent-teacher involvement.

I would like somebody give a more recently review of this school, we are moving to this neighborhood and don't want to travel 20 minutes everyday. They are attending an excellent school. One will be in middle school next year and other in elementary school. They are excellent students. what would be the recommended schools around it? Thanks.

IS 291 is on the path to great accomplishments. Quality Review ratings have improved tremendously over the past 2 years and we have presently been removed from the NYS SURR list. Students are exposed & offered many activities & experiences outside the realm of a modern school day. (e.g. skiing & snowboarding trips, Broadway plays etc) Parental involvement still needs to improve, along with parent/student accountability.

Tough community and the school reflects that. Teachers and all staff struggle to do the best they can. Before one puts down the school take a look at the surrounding community. It is hard to divorce the community from the school.

I think that I.S. 291 needs to improve its academics programs. I don't think that the schools staff challenge the children. The school is too quick to give a child detention but yet they don't have the ability to challenge the kids mentally.

The academic programs exist. The teachers do there jobs well, but it's up to the parents to tap into the resources that are available and to demand the institution of programs that are desired and are non-existent. Although the students receive instruction in Art, there is a lack of music, sports and other extracurricular activities. Once again, the parents need to demand that these programs become available to the students. The level of parent involvement is low.

I find it very heart wrenching that this school seems more like a zoo than a school. As the parent of a former student who will not be attending this school, this coming year, I must warn anyone considering sending their child to this school. your child id guaranteed to be left behind. their is a complete lack of leadership from the administration, starting with principal Lark,on down to the custodians. This school should be considered for total restructuring at all levels. There is not enough space here for me to continue, but I warn parents and alert Chancellor Klein that IS291 is so far below standard that it is a direct threat to our children and there futures. I am available for further comment into this school and my ideas of what some possible solutions could be.
