I chose St. Bernadette school for my children because of its academics. Which once, was a challenging, "blue ribbon" school has now turned into a sad display of nepotism. Sr. Joan has hired family members of school secretaries, parents of students and friends of parents. Some of these teachers are so bad and there is nothing Sr Joan does about it because they are all friends and family memebers of workers and students. It has become an unethical instituition and children are suffering for it, unless of course you are a donator to the school, then you get special treatment. Scores on standardized testing have dropped. On top of the declined academics, there is a lot of bullying in the school, which is handled poorly. Socially, the clickiness, is over the top here. I agree with all of the previous negative posts. On top of all this, for the money you pay in tuition, your voice is never heard. Sr. Joan will always take the side of her sub par staff, right or wrong.
I had four children in St. Bernadette's. Since my children have left the school they have never been happier. It is as if they have been released from prison. Sr. Joan is a terrible principal. She and here cohorts are a miserable bunch. They seem to feel that the more fear they instill the better the education. Creating an environment of tension and rigidity stifles a child's ability to think creatively. The only time you will ever see a child smile at St. Bernadette's is at dismissal. The secretary and many of the teachers wear constant scowl's upon their faces. Sr. Joan lacks compassion and is extremely cold to students and families. It seems to be painful for her to smile. There is no room in society for such a hypocritical institution as the Catholic School. St Bernadette's epitomizes this failure. The principal and facility utilize a stressful learning environment to create a culture of neurotic students and parents. I say to parents who are thinking about sending their children here -don't and to those who have children attending the school- leave. Your children will thank you every day, mine do.
I've been going to this school for a long time, and most of the people seem nice and normal. MOST OF THE PEOPLE. The class I'm in has a big drama problem, and I won't be surprised if other classes do. Some people in my class that you think are nice, are actually back-stabbing, tattle-tale jerks. The moms at this school are HUGE stage moms, and a lot of them live through their child. Their kids are usually in a dance competition team, the best player on a sports team or good at a after-school activity. Otherwise, the academics are great and have helped me a lot, and I got first honors for the full year last year because of the teachers at this school, even though some are very mean or strict. If you want your kid to get a good education and you are catholic, send your child here, but complaints about drama, teachers, and nuns.
it is a good school if you want to keep your children with "their own kind" no diversity and the learning is subpar. It is good if you like to isolate your kids from the "real world"
STUCK-UP MOB WIVES WITH SPOILED KIDS!! IF YOU DONATE EXTRA $$$ THE SCHOOL WILL TREAT YOU BETTER.
My parents decided to enroll me in St. Bernadette for Grades 6-8 and was one of the best decisions they have ever made. This school provided me with the fundamentals needed to excel in High School, College and the workforce.
Best move we ever made was to pull our child out of this school. Too many children go in the school each morning crying, all grade levels. Too many parents standing on the corners with nothing better to do then talk about the scool. Labeled Saint Harvard by the Principal, who loves to manlipulate statistics and bad moth other schools. The Home School Associatiion, is an in your face snoot squad for the most part, hand picked by the Principal.
My wife and pulled our sons out of public school and could not be happier with St. Bernadette. Discipline, rigor and responsibility are not just words here, as they often are in the public schools. The teachers and the administration teach these values every day. My kids are much happier and much better off here. Now, a word about some of the reviews below. It's unfair and silly to claim that parents send their children to St. Bernadette to "hide" them from the diversity of the local schools, whatever that means. There is no way the reviewer could possibly know that. If your son or daughter is properly and broadly educated, they will be able to interact with and respect all people, and respect is something St. Bernadette teaches every day. The complaints about cliques (yes, that's how it's spelled) and rude parents are anecdotal and are no basis to condemn an entire school. Besides, the most important thing is that children are in a safe and tolerant environment and receiving a great foundation for a lifetime of learning, and that s precisely what St. Bernadette provides.
This school prepares kids for a competitive world, while opening them to a deep appreciation and knowledge of their faith. The teachers and principal are continually updating themselves. There is ALWAYS something for the kids to be a part of. Whatever your child enjoys, chances are you will be able to find it here. The academics are top notch and teachers are available before and after school to offer help. They will even arrange for older students to serve as peer tutors. Wonderful school
Dont bother! While I agree with the previous reviewer, the principal is great..the school is not. The pre k class is just not up to par with other preschools in the area. The children watch movies. The toys and books are old and not age appropriate. The pre k classrooms are in the basement, It is old and dingy, HOT as anything in the warm months, my child came out of class sweaty and cranky the last 2 months of classes. The learning is more suited to a 2 year old than 3 and 4 year olds. There is no physical activity at all, the kids are pent up for the 2 and 1/2 hours and when they are dismissed they run through the parking lot (which is cracked and unsafe) to burn off the energy. Water bottles and thermos are not allowed. My child complained of being bored all the time. They do alot of prayer learning and song singing, thats about it. I must say the assistants were wonderful, but the school was a big disapointment. We cant wait to start at another school, being done with saint bernadette is a breath of fresh air.
very dissapointing school. I cant say what grade my child is in out of fear of being harrassed by parents. The academics are average at best. Students are "helped" along, not in a good way. The school lacks diversity. The home school association is pushy and rude unless you are one of the board members friends. The parents are very unchristian like, gifts are given out to students and teachers in plain view of other children. Parents here feel they are above school rules, School rules are constantly broken. I can go on and on. Seems most of the parents have there chldren here just to hide them from the diversity of thre local schools. The mosignor of the church walks by and the parents dont even say hello to him, they are nasty.
Not so good in my opinion. My child is in pre k 4. The teachers seem okay, but he work could be a bit more advanced. I agree with the previous review that the people are rude. Apparently if you did not attend prek3 or you do not have older kids in the school you are not in the "click" and if your not friends with the moms in the "click" (sp?) your child will not be popular, since he or she will be going to school with the same small group of kids til they graduate. I know that there are greater concerns while rating a school, but this also has bearing on whether or not a kid enjoys school. It is not a diverse group of children either, which may not bother some people but I think diversity is good. The school is clean and small and I think it is a safe environment..but I cant really say anything else and I dont have anything to compare it to as this is our first school experience. We will not be returning in the fall.
So far my child is learning alphabet and writing which she learned two years ago at Treasure Island. They are extremely strict and have an'edge'. I will be happy to get her out next year. There is nothing advanced about this school unless your comparing it to public school or have no frame of reference.
My sons in there Pre-K program and he loves it. This is a great school
There is something for everyone at St. Bernadette School. Morning help, afterschool help, extra curricular activities, clubs, and many student council events are just a few of the perks at SBS. Kids get an exceptional foundation. Students themselves will tell you they are the best prepared as they enter their freshman year of high school. Teachers have good managemant skills so every kid is able to pay attention and get the most from every class period. This September the school revieved the NCLB Blue Ribbon Award for excellence. NO OTHER SCHOOL in Brooklyn can claim this honor. There is no other school for our family.
This is my second year in St. Bernadette, my oldest now in the middle school years. Being from another school we have had a taste of what is out there. Let me say that here at St. Bernadette I find all that I ever hoped for and more. Academically it is unmatched, I did not need a Blue Ribbon Award to tell me that. There is more here, there is a real sense of commitment and dedication among the staff. The kids enjoy going to school and doing their homework, they do not look at it as work or as a duty , they enjoy doing it. I can see they are really learning and not just for the exams, but they are retaining it, it is knowledge leading them to wisdom and shaping them for their future. I am grateful for St. Bernadette School, and grateful for Sister Joan. May God bless this school and Sister Joan and her dedicated staff and thank you God for helping me to find St. Bernadette School, you know I prayed!
I cant say enough how happy I am with this school.I have three children in this school and all three are doing fantastic! The school curriculum is outstanding the teachers are outstanding and sister joan does a fantastic job running this school. I just feel like I belong to one giant (happy) family, all the parents are very involved with every aspect of this school and their childrens education! There just isnt a better school than this in New York City!
I chose to put my son in St. Bernadette School in the sixth grade. I was very unhappy with the Catholic school he had been attending since kindergarten. I was very impressed with the overall interest the Principle and teachers took in all of the students. We couldn't help but feel welcome from day one. Their curriculum is outstanding, and I feel my son excelled in every subject due to the interest that the teachers took in him and all the students. I would give this school nothing but an A+. My son has now graduated but I am very excited that his sister now starting kindergarten will have a full 10 years with this very outstanding school.
